Michael Clay Thompson's stuff--Grammar Island Minquon History Odyssey--level 1 Ancients. Minimus Level 1 the Library! Â Â (this was our first 1/2 year of learning at home. I really liked HO for allowing me to jump in and have a lot of guidance, and library flexibility--and great materials. But I think I will not use the next level, and cover Medieval with Bilioplan, or ??) Â Not so Hot: Sequential Spelling. While I loved this in theory, it wasn't so great for a just turned 7 year-old, who reads very well. It was nice to just have it on hand and verbally go through the words, while writing down just five out of the 25 words per day, but my son hated it. He reads very well, and spells well, so I think this is something well just put on the back burner for the time. deeinfl
Here it goes...  Winners for my 8th grader Pacs Science Natural Science Mysteries SOTW 2 and 3 LOF Fractions and Decimals (algebra has posed more of a challenge) Megawords (every level all the way through between the 7th and 8th grades) Winston Grammar Basic with written history narrations  So so for my 8th grader Sequential Spelling 3 Writing Trails Science (got this to teach outlining...too easy and redundant for his age range, but not a flop altogether)  Winners for my 2nd grader School of Tomorrow English (fits his learning style) Rod and Staff Spelling Spelling Plus Dictation (started this as an intro. to dictation-we love it and he does not want to drop this at all) and CLE math-went quickly through quizzes and tests to be able to start the 2nd grade level in the 3rd grade Tatras Vertical Phonics-just recite our phonograms and go over our word lists. Pathway readers 2nd grade books 1 and 2, he did not like the font in 3, so we didn't get to it. Christian Liberty Nature readers-these totally fit his style, so these will be our readers for the third grade. Bible Study Guide Student sheets...we may just go to using the teacher's manual in the third grade as I don't like the intermediate level worksheets, but we loved the Beginner's level. Cursive Connections-I got this workbook A from Rainbow Resource and we have loved it as an introduction to cursive. A page a day and it's painless. His cursive writing is beautiful!  So so's, not total flops were Abeka Science and History-he was a little bored and wanted more information, but we did read a lot of trade books to enhance this...still debating on whether to use the next level. I know with each level there is a beefing up, so to speak, so we may stay with these...or switch to Ace or BJU for science in our 3rd grade year.  Rod and Staff Math 2-we got to finish 3/4ths of this program, but I realized that my son didn't have a clue what was going on and started to dread math and have daily tears. This is when a dear friend gave me about 5 year's worth of CLE math lightunits and I decided to give it a go. So far so good, but I haven't used it long enough to really be able to give a review about it. So far he loves the variety in CLE, but the jury on retention is still out.  Every year I get better and better at picking curriculum and sticking it out unless it's causing tears. If it's not causing tears and we can tweak it to make it work, we will, and we do!  Blessings!!!  Dee

FlockOfSillies
This year I had 5th, 1st, K, a toddler, and a newborn. I had a rough time this year with any non-independent work, especially when the toddler started walking.  Winners: Hiring a mother's helper -- saved our homeschool Singapore Math, all levels ETC -- best books ever OPGTR (when we got to it) -- dd doesn't like it, but she's learning to read IEW SWI-A and Ancient History-Based Writing Lessons -- I'm no longer worried about my dd9's writing progress FLL 1&2 (when we got to it) WWE 1 (when we got to it) FLL 4 (when we got to it) Megawords Timeline (when we got to it) God's Design Science -- Animals  Mixed Bag/Jury's Still Out: TOG Yr 1 Redesigned -- I need to plan out the whole year ahead of time. Planning a week or a quarter at a time just doesn't work, especially if you're giving birth around the beginning of the second quarter. Also, something in the layout of the Overview pages doesn't lend itself well to scheduling on the kids' end -- too easy for things to fall through the cracks. I think my kids need a list format or something. SOTW, D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths were the biggest hits. God's Design Science -- Human Body: They left out the endocrine system, as well as the kidneys and some other organs. Huh??? The kids enjoyed it, though. God's Design Science -- Plants: Still in progress. I'm supplementing with Apologia's Botany book for dd9. I'd like GDS to be a little meatier. Sometimes they give terminology and define it, other times they just use plain, simplified English terms. I think the Plants book was written to be used first, and we're using it last. Apples and Pears Spelling -- it's more teacher-intensive than I can really handle right now, so we don't get to it as often as I'd like. But I knew that going in, and we started it only a few weeks ago.  Losers: SWO -- ds loves it, and flies through the lessons, but retains nothing. SYRWTL Spanish 1 -- Like always, Spanish just falls off the schedule. I think the book moved a little too fast for my dd. I think we'll give it another try, now that we've sped up on math and her writing is going well. Wordsmith Apprentice (was that this year or last year?) -- dd liked it, but I thought it moved too slowly. TOG Writing Aids -- not enough step-by-step instruction for me.
