DawnM
I was reading about Melissa McCarthy and she says she goes to bed at 7:30pm. How would anyone actually be able to do that? I guess if you have to get up at 3:30am you would get used to it, but I have to get up at 6am right now and I have a hard time going to bed at 10.
Slache
I try to go to bed at 8:30 and get up at 5:30. I'm usually not asleep until 9 between getting in bed late and chatting with my husband, but that's the goal. Pregnant me sleeps from 8:30-8:30.
Pawz4me
I generally go to bed between 8:00 and 9:00 and read for awhile before nodding off. But during the winter it's not unusual for me to be asleep by 8:30. I'm usually up by 5:00 a.m. I've tried staying awake longer but I just can't do it. Well, I can stay awake if something's going on (social event, really big/important breaking news event, etc.). But I'm just naturally a lark. My brain starts getting mushy around 4:30-5:00 and everyone knows to not ask me anything that requires much mental agility after 7:00.
Annie G
We go to bed at ten because dh gets up at four. We can stay up late if we're out with friends or something but that doesn't happen often enough to throw off our sleep schedule.
DawnM
This year is winding down and I am so glad. I overcommitted, AGAIN, and was out almost every single night of the week. I don't even get home until 10 some nights. Starting this summer, my commitments are going down to almost nothing, and I will not be volunteering for anything other than my Tue evening group. I am heading back to work and I need at least 6 months to really acclimate to working full time again. But even then, I tend to not commit on week nights. Dh has agreed to do scouts with our youngest. I have done it for 10 solid years and I am TIRED. And, can I just share that I CANNOT wait for my middle son to get his license!!!!!! Oldest refuses to drive (Asperger's and some other issues so we are leaving it be) and can help out with driving!
amy g.
I start reading to my little girls at 8:00 then go to sleep around 9:00. I wake up without an alarm before 6:00. I have always needed a lot of sleep and don't like to feel tired. We have houseguests right now. Two nights ago we stayed up until 1:00 then 10:00 last night. I slept until 11:00 this morning and still feel like a truck hit me. I love my family, but I'm ready for everyone to leave so I can be in bed by 8:00 again.

Soror
We aim to be in bed before 9, ideally 8:30, dh gets up early and I am an early bird. TBH the way I hear most people talk they stay up too late and it interferes with their sleep. Personally, I like sleep and do not like to feel tired. I hate waking up late in the morning. On Mondays, Tues and Wed this past semester we've had activities keeping us out later and it has been brutal. Scouts will keep on until June but we are dropping out Wed commitment and Tues should be moved earlier, I can't wait.

The only time I ever sleep past 5:00 or so is if I've been sick with the flu or something similar that totally zaps me. For those early sleepers, do you not have evening commitments? It's not unusual for us to have meetings that begin at 7:00. Tomorrow night we have a concert beginning at 7:30, and when it's over, there's an hour and a half drive. When dd does the musical this fall, she'll have swimming until 5:30, then orchestra, and then won't even start practice until 7:30. When dh worked at the airport, he wasn't even off the clock until 10:30. How do you do this? We try out best not to. :) Our kids are older and at this point have very few activities that require our attendance in the evenings. Thank goodness. ;)

creekland
Add me to the early to bed and early to rise club. I tend to head to bed between 8:00 and 9:00. Whether I hit that goal or not I'm always up by 5am and usually closer to 4am. I can not sleep in. Even if I stay up to 1am, my body will not sleep in, so I'll just end up with 3- 4 hours of sleep and be tired/cranky later. My family is different, so if I'm doing something where I need to stay up to be social, even like last night when hubby wanted us to watch WaterWorld, I hit the caffeine. Then this morning around 10am I took a nap. Naps only last 30 - 45 minutes though as my body physically can't stand being still for too long (pain issues). At night, if I go to bed early enough I can get into a deep enough sleep to ignore it. By morning or while napping that doesn't happen. As with others, my kids know the best time to play games with me (hoping to win) is after 8:30pm. :glare: We do attendance in the evening things when we want to. I just know I'll have to have caffeine and try to work a nap in the next day. I try NOT to do them on school nights when I'm working the next day. When traveling I get pretty darn sleep deprived, but I tell myself I'm still young and can handle it.

Ditto. Our kids were totally used to me taking them somewhere and dad picking them up - except for overnight deals that started at 10pm and ended at 6am. Then dad would drop them off and I would pick them up. It worked quite well actually. We also have no need for an alarm clock in our house. I'm it. We have one to tell time, but it very, very rarely gets used. I usually set it as a backup for something important - just in case - but once I forgot to turn it off and found out I have no idea how to turn it off when it's actually ringing as it's different than turning it off before it goes off! (Hubby was not amused. He had no need to be up that early. I usually wake him up when I leave for work, but I'm not sure how often he gets up then.)

Ideal to me is to bed at 9 and up at 5:30. I'm a morning person anyway but between nursing babies, thyroid and hormone issues my sleep has taken a hit so people think I'm crazy militant about not staying up but I don't care. We have a lock-in for our AHG group, I think that is about the stupidest idea in history(let's mess up everybody's sleep- why does that sound like fun?). I didn't let the girls do it for awhile but now dh does it and sleeps in the daddy room. We did camping a few weekends ago and I ended up not in bed(tent) until 10 and with all the busyness and a nightime hike I was wired. I finally fell asleep around 12 and then woke up at 4 having 4 very wakeful hrs of sleep. I finally fell asleep at 6 and slept til 7(after taking my thyroid meds)- we then did about 12 miles of hiking and biking. Oh, vey. I should have came in the morning instead of staying that night, it took days to recover from that. Edited May 7, 2016 by soror
SparklyUnicorn
I wish. My sleep is so screwed up lately because 2-3 nights a week I get home late. Mondays I don't get home until 9:30. I hate that because it throws my whole sleep schedule off. And BTW my kid is the only homeschooled kid doing this activity. So all of those kids have to get up for school the next morning. I think it's ridiculous. Ideally I get to bed no later than 10 and fall asleep by 11. Lately though I've been in bed as late as 1 am. I don't have to get up super early, but I would prefer to get up earlier so I have more time to do stuff. I do a lot better on enough sleep though. Lady Florida.
If I went to bed that early I'd never have any time for myself. Night time is when I relax and do what I enjoy -reading, crochet/knit/sew, other crafty stuff, or just doing little things around the house. I've always been a bit of a night owl though. When I was teaching and school started at 7:15 with teachers having to be there 15 minutes before the bell, I had no choice but to go to bed by nine. I hated it, and though I learned to tolerate it I never really got used to it. When I don't have to get up too early I usually try to go to bed by 11 or 11:30 but it ends up being more like 12-12:30. I get up around 8-8:30 without an alarm. I'm an extreme morning person. Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder runs in my family. Part of his DSPS comes from his ADHD, but part I truly believe (and the doc does too) is blue light from his computer. He does gaming with friends most nights. We ordered him blue blocking eyeglass clips that are supposed to help, but they're back ordered. The sleep doc also told him he needs to gradually change his bedtime - try to go to bed just 10-15 minutes earlier each night. He's always been this way; even as a tiny baby he was unable to sleep properly so while the computer screen exacerbates the problem it's not likely the cause.

I will probably do that tomorrow morning, because I am working on something for a web site and am about ready to finish that.. Before DD was a TTUISD Distance Learning student, for four (4) school years, I had to wake my wife and DD up at 450 A.M. DD was out of the house at 550 A.M. on school days. It is very unusual for me to stay in bed until 6 A.M. When we were in Orlando, one morning my wife was sleeping and I didn't want to wake her up. DD knocked on our door at 723 A.M. In general, my understanding is that people who are up early in the mornings, as a group, are more successful than those who like to sleep late. "Morning people"... DawnM
I will add that my body clock is really 11-12 to bed and 8-8:30am rise. But that doesn't happen now. It did when the kids were all homeschooling and we didn't need to be anywhere. I didn't even know that was my body clock until I stopped working and didn't have to get up in the am. But now middle son has to be out the door by 6:45am for school, so I am up around 6:15. Some of the jobs I am looking at will require me to leave the house by 6am. I think the plan is to have my lunch packed and clothes ready and get up at 5:30, shower quickly, while the coffee is making, and get out by 6am. My hair can dry on the way. That is how I did it when I worked 12 years ago.
VaKim
That's an unusual sleep cycle! Well, it's not exactly on purpose. I used to go to bed that early, but would actually sleep and get up around 4am. I am a morning person. However, since my hysterectomy years ago, I can no longer sleep well at all, so I end up sleeping in "snatches." Is it dark? In the Pacific Northwest the sun sets after 9:00 and there's light in the sky till 10:30 or so. In the summer, the longest days stay light until around 9 or 9:30. In the winter, it is dark here by 5 on the shortest days. My bedroom is always totally dark though, as I have so much trouble sleeping and the slightest bit of light bothers me. You all have very late sunsets! I am in the mountains, so the sun sets much earlier here.
Guest
I have been going to bed no later than 10 and my alarm goes off at 5am. I do hit it a few times, but it also wakes the dogs, who start to get restless. I am generally out of bed by 5:15 to potty them and walking one of the dogs by 5:30. I will often fall asleep while DH is watching TV at night if the show is boring or if I am not knitting. I wouldn't mind going to bed a little earlier, but I really relish the time to be quiet and alone (w/o kids). I avoid evening commitments at all cost. We do Awana, but DH drives to it and it is our one night out. Occasionally I will have a church meeting or Pampered Chef-type party, but I really avoid going out at night, if at all possible.
