Wolf's fave Christmas movie...that and Die Hard (yes, I've tried to convince him Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, but...) He and Diva have watched Christmas Vacation several times together.

I insist that they watch Its A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street to balance it out though :tongue_smilie:

Oh gosh, that is one of our favorite movies!! We've been watching that every Christmas for years so yes, my kids were younger than 14 when they started watching it. The scene with the sled is one of the most hilarious scenes of all time in my book! Come to think about it, I can't think of anything questionable in the movie so maybe the movie has so many positve things that none of us picked up on the questionable things?

UMM.. How in the world can you not remember the atrocious language including the one scene where he rants and raves using the f word?!!!!! The answer is a resounding no in this house.

Other! I will let him watch a tv version that has been edited.

We were so bummed when they stopped showing the edited version on TV here. It used to be a family tradition. I bought the DVD, and the first time we watched it I about fell over...I didn't realize how much had been edited.

Other. Maybe, depending on maturity. I'd probably go with the TV version.

I have fond memories of watching all kinds of movies with my parents from age 9 on(Christmas Vacation, Blues Brothers, etc.).

My parents always let us watch the TV version that would have aired in the late 80's early 90's that they taped. Imagine my shock at the real versions!

Yes, my 12 yo watched it last night. We don't let him watch the fantasy scene with the girl & the pool. And we *try* to mute the G-D's. Otherwise, we let it play.

I much prefer the tv edited version, but we own the video so that's what we do. My 21 yo just watches, although if he's with me, I stand in front of him during the fantasy scene - just because it's so much fun to vex him ;)

By age 14, I've found it becomes kind of difficult to police everything my kids watch. (My daughter was 800 miles from home most of the year by the time she was that age.) Although we do put our collective parental feet down on some things, I don't know that this is a battle I'd care enough to fight.

With that said, I don't like the film. I think it's gross and tacky, and it likely wouldn't ever be turned on in our house on purpose. My daughter would hate it. My son might think certain bits were funny, but I don't think he'd especially like it, either.

So, I doubt the issue will ever come up around here.

Well, I'm just the third one in this boat.

IF I can find it on tv, maybe it will be okay. I just remember the "real" movie--and I love it, but it's not appropriate for my 13yo.

Yes, I would.

Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie!!!

We'll watch it if it's on TV, but were not fans enough to buy it.

We're more likely to watch Die Hard for the holidays anyway. Yes, it is a Christmas movie. I'm glad they came out with a 4th of July version too. :DI find it be the superior movie of the series, except no Alan Rickman.

We "made" ds watch The Blues Brothers not long ago. He didn't love it!

Yes, the kids have seen Christmas Vacation and they aren't 14 yet.

Based on the recent Christmas movie threads I think I'll have to try Die Hard this year. I haven't seen it in forever.

Just a warning, dh and I also loved this movie when we were dating. We watched it recently and were horrified at all the f bombs in there!!!!

I voted yes- the edited TV version, for an older child. It's even possible my 5yo has seen parts of it with my husband, although it would never happen with me there. ;)

I saw the DVD version for the first time last year and had NO IDEA.

I voted option. I've never seen it, I have no desire to see it. I despise anything remotely slapstick. (or seriously over-the-top)

I saw another chevy chase movie, that as a non-religious teen I thought was hysterical. I was thoroughly appalled when I watched it again as an adult. But then, my siblings had VERY foul mouths when they were teens. Now, I regard that as lacking in vocabulary. (especially my brother - who likes to mock english majors as having a worthless degree. He frequently mixes up homonymns and synonymns.)

The pool scene is in the Christmas Vacation movie. It's when Clark is fantasizing about using his Christmas bonus to put in a pool. I wouldn't normally be so clear about this, except that my ds11 and I watched this the other day...so, my answer to the poll is yes! :tongue_smilie:

Oops. I have to change my answer. Yes to Christmas Vacation; my "no" vote was for the original Vacation.

(Now I'm wondering if we watched Christmas Vacation on TV or DVD.)

Oh I forgot about that. I was thinking of the motel pool scene in Vacation. I don't think the pool scene is an issue though. To each his own. We do have the DVD, so ds has seen the unedited version. I'm fine with that.

 I have loved that movie since I was 9 or 10. It's so quotable!

There's a pool scene in Christmas Vacation where Clark is day dreaming about the pool he's going to put in with his Christmas bonus. At first he sees his family playing in the pool, but then it morphs into a girl in a red swimsuit........I may have seen this movie too many times. :tongue_smilie:

We played it for the kids the other night. I was really surprised at some of the things in the unedited version. We are so used to the one on tv. We didn't remember some of the language, flipping a bird, and the breast issues. I don't think I would show it again unless it was edited.

I've only seen the edited version, so no, I'm not aware of language issues.

Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie!!!

Yeah, cause shooting, explosions, etc is so totally 'peace on Earth, goodwill to men':lol::lol:

I know, it is wildly inappropriate, but here it is a time honored family tradition.

We watch it every Thanksgiving to kick off the season.

Sue me.

A quote for every family member. :D

Can I refill your eggnog for you? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere? Leave you for dead?

"You surprised to see us, Clark?"

"Oh, Eddie... If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now."

I honestly don't know if I've ever seen it. Bits and pieces on TV over the years, yes. The whole thing? Not so sure. Still, I'd probably let my 7 year old see it. I can't imagine really limiting a 14 year old's choice of movies, within reason, of course (no porn or such.) A few f*** bombs don't scare me.

:iagree:My kids have all watched it every year since they knew what a TV was. The innuendo goes over their heads when they're little and when they're old enough to understand...it's funny. We quote that movie all the time!

"The blessing!!"

"I pledge allegiance....."

I might just have to watch it tomorrow while the boys are gone. I really wish they still showed the edited version on TV here! Back when my older boys were preschoolers/toddlers, they invented a Christmas chase game called "Squirrel!"

My 9 and 11 yos watched it for the first time this year. I think I was remembering the edited version when I thought it was ok. About halfway through dh and i looked at each other like, "What were we thinking?" I was surprised at the language for pg-13. Funny movie, but i think I'd prefer the edit for kids under 16 at least.

We'll have to show at least the edited version to the kids before 14. We talk in movie quotes around here, and they are going to wonder why Dad keeps saying, "Do you really think it matters, Eddie?" when neither of them is named "Eddie". :D

DH and I totally do that too. We are constantly talking in movie quotes around here. :001_smile:

I have it on dvd and even my 5yr old has seen it. BUT, I must have an edited version. There is no f-word anywhere. I do distract for the woman in the red swimsuit scene, followed by the "santa is bull" scene. :D

It is rated PG in the UK, which is different to PG13. U is for kids movies like Disney/Pixar, PG is for family movies with some mild scenes/language, includes Edward Scissorhands and Christmas with the Kranks for example. We have 12 and 12A(adult supervision), 15 and 18 ratings also.

So I voted other as I mustn't have seen the version being discussed.:D

As an aside I have been surprised by some of the language in movies from that era. It's like they rated on a different scale then, which I think they did. Have you watched an unedited version of The Goonies lately? Funny, I didn't remember that amount of cursing. :tongue_smilie:

I voted yes, but we have a 'fixed' VHS version. =) Years ago, when my boys were younger, we bought it and I snipped out the bad parts from the tape, taped the tape back together, and voila....a nice clean version of Christmas Vacation! That snipped version has lasted for YEARS! In fact, we just laughed it, I mean, watched it the other night. It's a family favorite.

As for the sexuality and bad language, unfortunately we will not be able to shield our children from that forever. Believe me I tried. When my older boys went out into the work force, and college, my dreams of keeping them innocent were dashed. I suppose high school is the best place to start preparing them for the real world. :tongue_smilie:
