Thanksgiving menus?

Recommended Posts

What's everyone making (or eating) for Thanksgiving? I haven't planned our menu yet. Usually we go to my parent's house for Thanksgiving, but that's not happening this year. I have made the whole shebang a few times and I'm really forward to doing it this year.

I'd love to hear some other's menus. Maybe it will give me some new ideas. Yum! I can't wait.:)

Here's ours. I usually make the majority of the dinner myself. I keep the menu, recipes, grocery list, and food prep / cooking schedule on a Word document (does this sound obsessive?) :)

Roasted Turkey & gravy

Sage dressing

Sweet potatoes (the kind w/pineapple & marshmallows, although one year I made it in the crockpot w/ apples and cranberries and it was delicious)

Mashed potatoes

Cheesy Broccoli and Rice casserole

Mandarin orange salad

Cranberry sauce (whole berry, from a can)

Dinner rolls (courtesy of Sister Schubert)

Butter

Sparkling grape juice

Apple Cider

Water

Apple pie (Apple Pie II from Joy of Cooking)

Pumpkin Pie

Turkey cookies

Whipped Cream

Coffee & Tea (cream/milk/sugar)

If we're having people over, they will usually bring something similar to what is on this menu, and I'll substitute, although I usually beg them to make the mashed potatoes so I don't have to. ;)

We never have green bean casserole because it always tastes horrible when I make it although I generally like it if someone else makes it.

My new Plan to Eat thing I've been raving about again has made this soo great. Every year I haul out all the recipes, sort through, and make my list from each. This year I had them tagged "thanksgiving" and just dragged and dropped them into the calendar, pressed shopping list and poof! So cool. If you want to look at the software (free trial) just click one of my recipes below... here's my menu

Turkey

Mashed Potatoes (just added extra ingredient potatoes on my calendar page so it was on the shopping list)

Stuffing with bread cubes, wild rice, water chestnuts, onion, celery, mushrooms and spinach (I made this into a "recipe" on my Plan to Eat since I could list ingredients and it would be on my shopping list)

Pistachio Salad

Asparagus Casserole

Sweet Potato Casserole

Cranberry Relish

http://www.plantoeat.com/recipes/103811/9943jcq5grbcdv/crockpot-cranberry-relish

Rolls (these are SO good)

Pumpkin Pie

Still tossing around whether to add a corn casserole and another dessert since 2 of my boys don't like pie.

My mom and I always cook the thanksgiving meal, and although it is hard, it's so worth it in the end!!

Here is what we have first:

fruit, and little things like that to keep us away from the big meal ;)

We usually eat around 1:00 to 2:00 pm, depending on when the turkey is done. This is what we have next:

Turkey

mashed potatoes

corn

portuguese stuffing

cranberry sauce

olives

sliced bread

string beans

and some other things as well, it depends on the company.

For dessert:

pumpkin gooey cake

pumpkin pie

apple pie

Hope this helps!

Pretty much the traditional menu here:

Turkey (Breast ordered from Boston Market) - Did I mention that my MIL called at 2:30 am to say that she just couldn't come for Thanksgiving since we're not serving a REAL turkey? This is also the woman who didn't want to host this year and thought we should all eat at a restaurant instead. Okaaay. You enjoy your dinner at Denny's, Mom.

Gravy

Cranberry sauce

Mashed Potatoes

Yams with maple syrup, butter and pecans

Corn pudding

Green beans

Cornbread stuffing

Dressing that my BIL is bringing

Rolls

Dutch apple pie

Pumpkin pie

Pecan pie

Sparkling apple cider

Quorn roast

mashed sweet potatoes

mushroom gravy

cheese grits

brussel sprouts

cranberry relish

rolls

pumpkin pie and 1 other pie, probably apple

popcorn

Extended family turkey dinner is on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That menu is constantly evolving.

Squash Stuffing Casserole (best ever vegetable side dish in the world)

Spinach Mushroom Panade

Plain Corn (For my DS and his fiance who are silly picky eaters)

Mashed Potatoes (always and forever)

Canned Jelly Cranberry sause (I just love this crappy stuff!)

Pumpkin Pie

Pecan Pie

Pumpkin Cheesecake

I'm really behind because I haven't figured Thanksgiving out yet this year. That's my weekend goal! We're going to get together with family, but also usually do our own dinner here.

I do have a bunch of recipe links on my blog that we've been trying out lately. They're mostly, though not all, desserts & I'll incorporate the best of them into my plans. The peanut soup mentioned in my weekly report today is one thing that I know will be on the menu. I used a natural honey peanut butter to make it & it was divine (and also really different, which I love).

I am not positive on everything we're having but this is what the general menu is most years. Please note that there are normally 20+ of us at Thanksgiving, so we have a lot of food, plus we have various food allergies.

Appetizers: various and assorted finger foods from Costco

Main Foods:

Turkey

Fillet Mignon

Macaroni and Cheese

Cauliflower with mustard topping thing (my aunt makes it, I don't like it so don't pay much attention to it)

Broccoli

Spinach Salad with pears and cheese (some years we have it some years we don't)

Mashed Potatoes

Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole

Soup (again some years we have some years we don't)

Stuffing

Dressing

Rolls

Cranberry Sauce (homemade)

Corn Casserole

Something or another I've probably forgotten

Desert:

Pumpkin Pie

Apple Pie

Vegan Chocolate Pie (DD can't have milk, this is for her)

Pecan Pie

Cake (sometimes)

Ice Cream

Brownies (sometimes)

Since our dog has kennel cough we probably won't be going to the inlaws.

We can't take her to the dogsitter and can't take her to the inlaws house, as MIL has no pets policy.

So we will probably have...

Turkey with gravy

Wisconsin Stuffing

Mashed potatoes with cheddar cheese

Sweet potatoes loades with brown sugar, butter and pecans

Corn

Pumpkin Pie

Chocolate chip cookies

Corn bread and biscuits

With what I've listed we could feed a small army. :D

Our Thanksgiving consists of a combination of my family and dh's Mom and brother all together. We eat at noon and people will continue to graze all day. This is pretty much our only meal on this day.

Turkey

2 kinds of stuffing (one my family likes and one dh's family likes)

mashed potatoes

sweet potatoes

green beans

green salad

mac and cheese

dinner rolls

deviled eggs

banana pudding

apple pie

pumpkin pie and probably one or two more desserts because we just don't know when to quit.

We are having lots of people, and my kids love to help with the cooking. Thanksgiving makes me so happy, it is always such an enjoyable day. Here is are working menu, we are still debating a few of the details

Appetizers and Snacks

Pumpkin dip with apples and gingersnaps

Crab dip

Brie and other cheeses

Sausage balls

Turkey (2 of them)

Oyster Cornbread stuffing (one of my favs!)

Sausage, Cranberry Stuffing (for the non oyster folks)

Mashed potatos (which DHs family eats a RIDICULOUS amount of!)

Sweet Potato Casserole

Romain Mandarin orange salad or strawberry spinach salad

Asparagus

Cider Green Beans

Cranberry Sauce

Assorted rolls and muffins

and because my MIL is from East Baltimore and won't come if we don't have it - Sauerkraut. In all my places of living I have seen this item on a Thanksgiving menu no where else, but it's family, what are you going to do!

For dessert

Pumpkin streusel pie

Apple pie

Red velvet cheesecake

We do a pretty traditional meal:

Turkey

Stuffing

Mashed potatoes

Green beans

Sweet potato casserole

Corn

Pumpkin pie

Cranberry salad

Cranberry sauce (usually fresh and canned. I like the canned. It's just not real cranberry "sauce" without the ridges!)

For appetizers we usually have a platter of banana peppers wrapped in salami, olives, deviled eggs, cheese, veggies, stuff like that. We aren't too original.

We're going to 2 different houses for Thanksgiving with extended family, 1 for lunch and 1 for dinner. I imagine we'll have the usual Yankee style at lunch and Southern style at dinner.

Then on Friday I'm making Thanksgiving dinner at home for dh who has to work Thanksgiving day. We're having:

turkey

giblet gravy

cranberry sauce

sausage apple stuffing

green beans cooked in apple stock and chicken stock

sweet potato casserole

bread

cranberry apple pie

And possibly mashed potatoes, though I'm trying to talk dh out of them.

Chicken! (not turkey)

Chestnut stuffing BTW Does anyone have a good recipe for this???

Smoked Egg Pate (eggs smoked on the grill)

various sides already mentioned many times

various desserts already mentioned many times

The kids would mutiny if I forgot the warm apple cider or the ice cream.

pole beans

mashed rutabaga

dressing(sage and sausage)

rolls

fruit salad or what my grandma calls fruit ambrosia

Desserts are: homemade cheesecake, apples pies, and probably a peanut butter pie with chocolate drizzled over it.

Same thing every year (different stuffing if my mom comes, but she's not this year)

Turkey

Cranberry Sauce

Stuffing (just spruced up Stove Top)

Wild Rice

Mashed Potatoes

Crescent Rolls

Salad made with lettuce, cukes, sugared almonds and mandarin oranges, with dressing made from the juice of the oranges, vinegar, oil and sugar

Gravy

Yams made with brown sugar

Baked Corn (creamed corn with added milk, cornstarch, sugar, and something else--dh makes, not me--and baked for about an hour til it's custardy)

We are light on the veggies. We are heavy on the added sugar. :tongue_smilie:

Oh, and pumpkin pie this year--we usually have homemade apple and cherry, too, but I think we are going a little lighter this year--then again, ds may spring for a couple of pies...

We've hosted every year since dd10 was almost one. This year we'll only have 13 at dinner.

My sister and dbil come up with fantastic appetizers that basically serve as lunch. We don't sit down for dinner until almost 6pm. There is no way on Earth I want to be touching raw poultry before the sun is up

turkey

basic bread stuffing cooked in the crockpot

apple-walnut stuffing also cooked in a crockpot

mashed potatoes

gravy

Maple-Glazed Roasted Sweet Potatoes (an old recipe from Woman's Day mag)

Zesty Broccoli Casserole (from Cooking Light a few years back)

canned cranberry sauce aka smooth

fresh cranberry sauce aka bumpy

steamed green beans w/ slivered almonds

Pause for an hour then

pumpkin custard pie

sour cream layered pumpkin pie

apple pie dd10 made at Girl Scouts last week (unbaked in freezer now)

spice cake with creamy maple frosting

pumpkin-oatmeal cookies

plain cheesecake and perhaps the Cranberry-Swirl Cheesecake on the cover of the Dec 2010 Cooking Light---if we do both, I'm scale each down and use my small springform pans

cider

sparkling juices

wine

ice water

coffee

tea

The only non-homemade items are the canned cranberry sauce and the bread used in the stuffing. Dd15 has a soy allergy and is sensitive to MSG. She doesn't like stuffing so I can use whatever bread I want. The year after she was diagnosed I killed myself making the bread from scratch (try making 4 loaves of bread and not letting anyone eat it!), then she admitted she doesn't like stuffing. Stinker.

Well, since we moved cross country, it is just us this year. We are having:

Turkey

cornbread stuffing

mashed potatoes and gravy

sweet potatoes

green beans

salad

cranberry sauce

crescent rolls

For dessert:

Apple pie

Chocolate cream pie

Pumpkin pie

And I am taking it easy and only doing the pie fillings, turkey and mashed potatoes/gravy homemade. :)

I am glad you stopped using those nasty crackers. Their behavior was atrocious.

We'll be having the usual:

turkey

gravy

cornbread stuffing

mashed potatoes

green beans

carrots

some kind of rolls

But what should we have for dessert? We're not big pumpkin pie eaters. Maybe chocolate cream pie? Hmm.

Wendi

I make shortcut chocolate pie. I use a frozen deep dish crust and Royal brand Dark and Sweet Chocolate Pudding. Homemade whipped cream, though.

The secret is the specific brand and type of pudding, plus using whole milk. The Dark and Sweet is so much better than any other pudding.

It's kind of a "throw together" pie but it is DH's favorite. Weird man but he's mine.
