Are you from a big family?

How do you define 'big family'? My family had 5 kids.

Not that big! I'm one of 5, but have a fairly large extended family. Last week at my grandmother's funeral, there were 140 direct descendants present. She had 6 children, 34 grandchildren and 97 greatgrandchildren, with 2 more on the way.

No. I grew up with only two sisters and one brother.

For a time we had two of my young cousins with us, and that felt big in our tiny house.

I was the eldest of three, but my mother was the second of five. Her sisters are all very noisy and when I was a kid, I was buying/making presents for about 30 people. So yes, I felt like we had a big family!

I grew up with an older brother (6yrs) who was always stuck babysitting. He hated me. We aren't close or estranged, we just don't really know each other. I wanted mine close and 4 is all I can handle or afford.

I am 2nd of seven..hubby is 7th of 8.

My extended family is huge.............close to 80 now! I am just counting my siblings and their families. 5 great grandbabies due between May and August and 5 weddings this year counting my two sons.

I'm the oldest of 6 (but it's a mixed family; not just bio). The three oldest of us are irish triplets (within 18mo). Then A is 3.5 yrs younger than me (she kinda got left out a lot :( ). The youngest two are 11-12 yrs younger than me.

 

My hubby is the youngest of "six" (we have since found out that a baby that supposedly died likely did not and there may also have been a baby after hubby). These are all by the same mother, but different fathers (married to them) AND all six were adopted by the last hubby.

 

ETA: We would have liked a houseful. We fostered for a time and have considered foster adoption, but so far it's just been the four of us.

My mom only had 3 kids, but her mom (my grandma) had 17! I have around 80 first cousins just on that side of my family! Our family reunions are huge with aunts, uncles, cousins, 2nd cousins, etc.

I'm the youngest of 5, but my mom was the 2nd oldest (but oldest girl) of a family of 10. My dad is the youngest of 6.

 

Dh is the youngest of 3, his mom is 2nd oldest of 3, and his dad was one of 5.

Mine personally was only my sister and myself. However, my dad had 7 in his family and my mother had 13. The weddings, the funerals, the wedding and baby showers, the birthday parties...Oh My!

I have never heard of Irish triplets... but guess that is what my grandmother had. She had twins, then a single (my dad) a year later. That was during WWII - before disposable diapers. I can't even imagine how many diapers they went through! :tongue_smilie:

 

I had one sister, 13 months older. Then a tag-along brother 12 years younger. So for most of my childhood, it was just my sister and I.

Shortly after my brother was born, my parents divorced and my dad remarried a very, very young lady with three young children of her own. My dad legally adopted those three, so we went from 2 children to 6 children in just a few years. :tongue_smilie:

Nope. Just me and 8 1/2 years later, my brother. My husband has one sister who's almost exactly 2 years older. My two sets of grandparents had 4 and 5 kids but my great-grandparents had something like 17 and 12 kids.

Well, I only had three siblings but we had a very close extended family so there was 11 of us together most every day. My hubby is one of seven and we have eight between us. I have been informed not to expect very many grandchildren though.

Youngest of 6. Mom was one of 12 and Dad was an only child so they split the difference.

I don't think I'll be trying for a number 6, but I do love how close my kids are, and I believe they will always be grateful having for each other.

My oldest sister was born in 1949, and I was born in 1970. She had her first child 3 mos. before I was born!

My dh is 8 of 10- also 20 years from youngest to oldest with no multiples.

 

I am 5 of 6, but not all from the same parents. My parents had 5 marriages between them, both bringing 2 kids to their marriage, then had my sister and I. My mom also "adopted" 2 older teens when I was younger.

 

It never occurred to me as a kid that there was such a thing as a big happy family, or to my dh- there is a definite reason we stopped at two.

Nope. There were 3 children in my family (older sister, me, younger brother). We never visited with aunts, uncles, cousins or grandparents so I feel as if I never really had much of a family.

I am the youngest of 3 and my older sisters are 9 and 12 years older, so I felt kind of like an only. My extended family was very large. My mother was 10 of 11 and my dad was oldest of 9, so I have over 50 first cousins!

 

I think one of the reasons I wanted a big family is because I was so alone much of the time growing up. I didn't want that for my kids.

I'm have two half siblings on my maternal side, three half siblings on my paternal side, three half of my halves on my paternal siblings' mother's side, and a stepsister. Nine of us were raised by threes with one group of three having a stepsister present. So I'm an only, oldest of three, oldest of four, second oldest of five, oldest of six two different ways, and the second oldest of ten.

 

My husband is one of two plus a stepsister, making three.

I am 5th out of 6. Dh is the youngest of 3. His parents would have had more but they married late. His dad was 2nd out of 10. Dh wanted a large family, but we didn't have our first until we were 30. After dd was born when I was 37, we decided that we were done. I was plum worn out.

Together they had only me

 

So, I am the baby of 9. I am 6 years younger than the youngest. The oldest was 22 and had a child of her own when I was born. I have a nephew who is older than me (my father was a grandfather when I was born). LOL
