Night Elf
Mine doesn't work right. All it does is create a mushy mess inside the press instead of spitting out pretty minced garlic. Does this mean mine is cheap and I should buy another one? Recommendations? We mince a lot of garlic and I'm tired of doing it by hand. HomeAgain
I never found one that worked for me. I use a zester plane instead.
Lawana
I find it takes filling it almost full—say with 3-4 cloves—cut in half, at least. Then expect leftover stuff that doesn’t get pressed. If I want only 1clove, I do it by hand. It becomes worth using the press when doing 3 or more.
madteaparty
I use a version of this (but not sure what’s up with the gift box?!)https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00I937QEI/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1519476194&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=garlic+press&dpPl=1&dpID=51bID%2BNXhnL&ref=plSrch
Night Elf
Rats! Most of the time I'm doing only one, sometimes two. Never more. I hate mincing garlic! How can i use it on my zester? Wouldn't it just create a juicy mash?
HomeAgain
How can i use it on my zester? Wouldn't it just create a juicy mash? Not really. The pieces are a little smaller, but it's more manageable. And if I'm cutting small enough to mince, then I'm not going to worry that the pieces are tiny, kwim? I scoop it up with a spoon, add it to the dish, and tap the rest off the zester into the pan. Easy-peasy (dh uses the zester cover to catch it all, so he doesn't even need the spoon.) Rachel
I have a pampered chef one that I’ve been using forever that does a good job. I just do one clone at a time. On a thread awhile back someone recommended a press that works really well on amazon. I thought it was saved on my wishlist, but isn’t, so I can’t link to it for you. mom31257
Pampered Chef is the way to go. You don't even have to peel the garlic.
J-rap
I really like my Pampered Chef one too, but it always comes out a mushy mess. It's not supposed to come out pretty. For pretty, you'd need to zest it or chop it into tiny pieces. But for most recipes that call for garlic, a mushy mess is perfect. Then it can easily mix into everything.
JFSinIL
I gave up and buy jars of pre-minced or chopped garlic (we go through a LOT) at the store. I find it in the produce area.

Yes, I bought a jar of minced garlic but DH doesn't like it as well as freshly minced garlic.
school17777
I recently bought a garlic rocker because I felt like my press wasted so much of the garlic clove. So far, I think I get much more of the clove out of that than the press.

When I said pretty, I just meant how the garlic looks in the advertisements of the presses. Mine doesn't look like that at all! Juice comes out and a flat mash is inside the press. I still have to cut it. I cut my thumb nail every time I mince garlic. The pieces are so tiny and holding them with my big fingers is clumsy. rose
I have an old zyliss garlic press made in Switzerland that works great. Here's a picture

Miss Peregrine
I just bought this after a thread on here. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M4RH8RA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I really like it. I use a small rubber spatula to help get the garlic out.
Lady Florida.
I've found that any garlic press including the Pampered Chef one, mushes the garlic. I had a PC and a Zyliss and got rid of both. I want minced garlic, not garlic paste. Those handled garlic presses give me something very close to garlic paste. Blech. I have this which can either slice or chop. I like that it holds the garlic until you're done. I use it when I need several cloves. I'm pretty sure I bought it at Target, but it's been a few years. https://www.amazon.com/Sharper-Image-Image%C2%AE-Garlic-Press/dp/B009JUSROS/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1519487494&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=sharper+image+garlic+chopper I saw this on a thread here recently and bought it. It's okay, and I use it when I only need one clove. https://www.amazon.com/Joseph-20037-Crusher-Dishwasher-Stainless/dp/B01ATV4O2O/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1519487318&sr=1-4&keywords=garlic+rocker&dpID=31JJzB4ZOLL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
Storygirl
I also recommend the Pampered Chef press. I've had mine for 20 years (it was a wedding shower gift). I love that I don't have to peel the garlic cloves. One you press the lever, the garlic comes out of the holes, and the peel stays inside the press. Sometimes the peel pops out easily so that I can throw it away, and other times I snag it with a little fork and pick it out of the press to throw it away. Either way, it is so much easier and convenient and faster than peeling garlic. And yes, when pressed, the garlic is kind of pulpy, but I don't mind that at all. It mixes well into the food that way.
sassenach
IKEA sells a great, cheap press. It even comes apart nicely for cleaning. I love it.

Pippen
I'm totally in love with this garlic twist. I still have to peel and if it's a large clove I cut into smaller chunks, but it works great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M4RH8RA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Here's a demo video of a different brand: Edited February 24, 2018 by Pippen

Night Elf
Ok, I ordered the garlic twister and the garlic rocker. Hopefully one of them will work. Thank you!
Carol in Cal.
I use the jarred chopped garlic, and I use about 2-3x as much as the recipe calls for. I can't tell the difference in taste if I use that excess amount. I don't even like peeling garlic. The smell seems to linger on my hands for days and days. Miss Peregrine
I use one of those rubber cylinders for peeling. Makes it easy. I've always found the jars make my fridge smell.
nixpix5
I have a cuisinart chopper device that minced garlic beautifully. However, I discovered jars of pre minced garlic that I can keep in the refrigerator and use at will. It has made me lazy but I love it! prairiewindmomma
Oh my goodness—people using jarred garlic—have you tasted it raw and compared it to freshly chopped garlic? They taste and smell nothing alike!!! I use an IKEA garlic press. It works well, washes well, and it’s under $4, I think.
Laura Corin
I rarely use one. I just smash them with the flat of a knife and put them in whole.
ChrisB
We prefer something like this very basic garlic press. When we lived in Rome, this is what they sold for a simple press. So we bought a few before we left, and I still have an unopened extra in the drawer.
marbel
With the zyliss almost everything goes through and I can do only one clove if I want to. We have an ancient zyliss; it came with my husband when we combined households 23ish years ago. Works great for us. It's one of the few single-function kitchen things I like.
