fairfarmhand
Last night right at dark. She was a 6 year old Jersey milk cow. She was fine one minute and an hour later she was down, seizing. It's apparently Grass Tetany, caused by a magnesium imbalance. Unusual for a cow in late pregnancy, but it happened. She was a sweetheart, my friend. I was really looking forward to getting back to milking. My dh tried hard to save her calf but it didn't work. She would've calved probably in the next few days. We're all worn out and puffy eyed this morning.

cintinative
Wow, that would be so hard! She was beautiful! There is a dairy in Yellow Springs about 1.5 hours from us that has all Jersey cows. They are so cute!

barnwife
I am so sorry. It still hurts my heart to think of the goat kids that we lost last winter. DH checked the moms and there were no signs they were going to kid. He left to go OOT. By the time I went out to check again (it was on the early side for them to be kidding anyway), 2 had kidded (2 set of twins and 1 singleton). Though they had nice housing, both moms chose to kid outside in the snow, and it was bitter cold. There was nothing I could do. She was a gorgeous cow!

Melissa in Australia
So sorry. I have had a house cow die before, though not that quickly. It is heartbreaking. We always have a Jersey as well
