Mergath
Can you believe that? What moron steals an old Ford Focus with a child's CAR SEAT in the back? :cursing: The cops did find it, luckily. Half an hour away, in a ditch. Front end all smashed up. And the best part? The tow company won't give it back to us until we pay them a couple hundred dollars in towing fees. Even if your car is stolen, they make you pay the fee. No discounts. Which we don't have. They won't even let us get the car now and pay them the fee when dh gets paid in a week. And we don't even know if it'll run well enough for us to at least get it back to the driveway. And our insurance was liability, so no help there. I'm going to go curl up in a corner and cry myself to sleep, I think. :crying: ETA: And it's our only car, did I mention that? Dh is really going to have a blast walking a mile each way to work every day for (at least) the next week. AAARRRRGGGHHHHH.

Faithr
I'm so, so sorry. That happened to us too a long time ago and we didn't have the money to get the car out of the towing yard. Dh had to borrow from his dad. Hope your dh gets a ride or at least gets healthier getting all that exercise to work and back!
Aspasia
Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry. I seriously hate towing companies. I don't know how those people sleep at night. Their entire business model is founded on screwing people over. Do you have a credit card you could use now and then pay it off when your dh gets paid? That's what we would do. Their entire business model is founded on screwing people over. Do you have a credit card you could use now and then pay it off when your dh gets paid? That's what we would do. Nope, no credit cards. Our credit is pretty well shot from back when dh had a long period of unemployment and we couldn't pay my student loans. And I totally agree about the towing companies. I don't know how they can justify charging hundreds of dollars for towing our car a few blocks and sticking it in a dirt parking lot. That works out to, what, four hundred dollars an hour, they make? Must be nice.
lil' maids in a row
That is awful! I am so sorry! Does Dh have a bike? It might make getting to work a bit easier and faster than walking. When I was growing up we had a car stolen--not just the money but it's a violated feeling as well. We do, but there's a good foot of snow on the ground atop several inches of ice. And dh is kind of clumsy. Probably wouldn't end well, lol. Yeah, you do feel violated after something like this. They took it right out of our driveway! And I keep picturing the person sitting there laughing at dd's seat and her little toys and sweater in the back as they drive our car into the ditch. :glare: Ugh. This sucks. sbgrace
I hope you can convince your husband that most people would want to give him a ride in this situation. I hope the car is able to be driven when you get it. I just thought of something--are there any resources in your community to help? In our state (Indiana) the township trusties do offer short term/single situation type relief for people in financial trouble like this. I don't know if all states are the same of course but you could call your county or city and ask if there are resources for help available. If you are comfortable many churches will try to help too I expect.
Renthead Mommy
Make sure they don't have a storage fee. If they do, you'll end up owing even more. If you wait a week for payday the bill could be much higher. If they have a fee, I'd borrow the money from anyone you can. Possibly get a loan or as a last resort use a payday loan center. You don't want to end up owing more than the car is worth.

2squared
We had a car stolen out of our driveway about 5 years ago. The thieves drag raced it and totaled it. We had to pay towing fees AND storage fees on a car that wasn't driveable. Storage fees are charged by the day (and begin the day they have the car regardless of whether you know about it or not), so I would be on top of the situation. The fees felt like the equivalent of a payday loan since they were like $70/day. The storage lot had a racket too. If we turned the title over to them, then they waived the storage fees. Nice. They had us corned, and it didn't feel good.

elegantlion
Have you considered contacting a charitable organization? I have no clue who would deal with that but I'd call. Your dh doesn't need to be walking a mile to work in this weather. Surely there's a secret santa group somewhere with a few hundred bucks leftover after Christmas. susancollins
People can be so mean and disappointing!!! Sorry, it really doesn't seem fair that the towing company can charge so much! I would calling and try to negotiate with them.
Mergath
Thanks, everyone. :) I'd thought about trying to contact a local charity, but I figured they must all be completely wiped out right after Christmas. I called the towing company, and once I was on the verge of tears they agreed to waive the storage fee after today. So that's something, at least. Cera
It might be worth calling your police departments nonemergency number to ask them if there are any victim's services organizations. Most places have them and their purpose is to cover monetary losses for the victims of crimes.
