TMI thread: Europeans and shaving

Recommended Posts

Speaking for Germany: many girls/women now shave their legs and underarm hair. They did not when I was a teen/young woman.

Don't know about other parts.

 It's nosy isn't it? I just wonder because of the trend here. Younger men here now expect women to be shaved or they are grossed out. Sad.

We're not supposed to shave there now, are we?

*sigh*

Honestly, just getting around to shaving my legs generally takes a pap smear.:glare:

:lol::lol::lol:

It's mainly for the younger generation. I feel sorry for my daughters. I hope this is just a phase.

Most British women shave their legs and armpits; I don't. I happened to ask my lip-waxing lady last week about bikini waxes; she said that they were fairly rare - people might get it done once a year before going on holiday. She didn't mention any other intimate waxing. I haven't heard of any intimate shaving, but I don't know how I would hear.....

Husband wants to know if young men shave their own pubes.

Nope. I'm not kidding. Younger men, usually college-aged expect women to be shaved. Bad rumors can be spread about girls that do not shave. It is so sad. It all stems from the p*rn industry.

It is the same here in Aus. Most of the women I know my age or younger (late 20's) do wax some down there.

I've read before someone saying that young men don't know what real women are supposed to look like any more...

I remember my mum and aunts joking about the 'leg caterpillars'

I know I am being a fuddy duddy BUT why should college-aged women be worried about this if their behavior/attitude is mmmmmm wise?

You have got to be kidding. About the other parts, I mean.

I completely agree with it being ridiculous. It comes from the porn industry just as the excessive breast augmentation and push up bras for tweens are now the norm. I refuse to look like a prepubescent girl. There is a difference between ladyscaping and waxing the whole business. Until women refuse to acclimate themselves to porn culture these trends will continue. FWIW I think it is one matter to do what is comfortable for oneself versus wanting approval from a lover regardless of gender.

Yes. Trimming and such is called manscaping; complete shaving is often called a bald eagle :D

Both old and young, male and female, do a lot of, er, manicuring in my area. Some of it is fashion, and some of it is the fact that it's very hot and humid, and manicured . . . areas . . . can be much more comfortable.

I can attest that this is so. When True Blue and elizabeth agree and are seeing the same trends you know the wheels are about ready to come off. I am sad for my daughter that porn standards have become the norm but there you have it. What a crappy ideal for so many people.

In my area, even arm hair (not armpit: arm, and in addition leg, pit, and bikini, and toe) is frequently removed. Maybe we are supposed to look and feel like Barbies now.

I just can't imagine the time involved in removing all hairs from everywhere. Sheesh. As it is, I have fine hair on my upper legs, so I only shave from the knees down. I'm just trying to picture if I did all of both legs, both arms, and...you know. It must take forever.

Exactly. Trim or shave if one wants to, but to have that become a standard is ridiculous, especially since drs. don't recommend it. Hair removal can lead to folliculitis.

From what I've read (it was in Redbook or something like that) and heard (from a friend who is an OB nurse), most women over 40 don't shave down there, many under 30 do, and the thirty-something crowd is a mixed bag.

I never shaved much except enough to wear a swim suit. I eventually decided to shave a little more and a little more then finally went bare. I like it much better. It certainly wasn't because of porn. Dh shaves too.

I would have done it sooner, but I was always afraid if I had to go to the doctor he would think I was strange not to mention how embarrassed I thought I would be. After reading more about it and finding out that it isn't that uncommon, I decided to go ahead.

I think it's a preference thing. I don't know if it will become the standard. Maybe with the younger crowd. I'm 48. I think people should do whatever they're comfortable doing.

Okay, I have to ask. How often do you have to do this? And doesn't it get prickly prior to the next shave? Inquiring minds, you know...

Professionally I see a lot of neither regions as an emergency department RN. I'd say at least 90% of the under 40 year olds are bare.

.

Everywhere you go here in Malaysia there are waxing centers. It is extremely common among the younger Chinese generation and the westerners on the island but not so much with the Indians and Malays.

And it is cheap and fast. All you need is 40 bucks and 15 minutes once a month. Don't ask how I know. :tongue_smilie:

As a swim mom, and athlete myself, I've noticed a lot of talk in the locker rooms about shaving and waxing, not trimming.

Do medical professionals prefer women to shave or not shave? Do OBGYNs?

:iagree: My friend is an L&D nurse, and closer to 95% of women she sees (and she sees a lot in her line of work ) have at least a Brazilian. She prefers her patients to be that way for deliveries, and no one bats an eye. What's odd now is to see someone who is au naturel (meaning nothing removed).

Wow. This is so incredibly weird that I'm actually having trouble processing it.

:iagree: until the thread a couple months ago about how to handle Tea Room Carpet, I honestly NEVER knew that bare was the norm. I am fairly repulsed by the idea, and certainly by the idea for my dds. Blech.

I totally agree. I think it is sad that women feel it necessary to jump through all of these hoops just to look attractive. Women did not shave for most of history. Did men say "yuck" for those thousands of years?:D

Not to put out too much personal info here, but in my 20s I had a man express an interest in the thread topic. I told him if that was a deal-breaker, he was free to go elsewhere. I hope to high heaven I raise a girl who is not so swayed by trends or the aesthetic desires of others as to give a flying fig what they think, or change her grooming habits accordingly. And, porn or no porn, I hope to raise a boy who understands the difference between real bodies and lens-filtered, hairless, augmented bodies. I'm pretty sure both of those things are possible, regardless of the trends.
