Tree House Academy
My son is 11 - will be 12 in early August. I really thought that was too young for a boy to start puberty, but I was apparently...um...wrong. Let's just say he has more "signs" than a few pimples and shooting up like a sprout. The doctor said he was in "phase 2," whatever that means. So...my question: Is 11 the normal age for a boy to be well into puberty? It just seems too young to me! brightside
:grouphug: Sorry, it happened to me as well. It is still a bit of a shock. My son is 13 1/2 he is 5'9 125 pounds, with a mustache and a deep voice. It scares me silly because people are constantly mistaking him for 15 or 16. :glare: Do you think I could get away with covering him from head to toe and hiding him away for a few more years? If we plot together, maybe we could hide them away together and keep them cute, sweet smelling little boys a bit longer. Thea
My ds is 13 with facial hair/he's 5'10 or so and has a nice deep voice. However, all the men in my and dh's family hit puberty early ish. My brother and my dh sported full beards in 8th grade.
Plucky
11 1/2 - 12, I was not ready for it. Poor hormonal young guys. He finally hit 6'2". He still doesn't have a lot of facial hair. Little brother is going through puberty at 13. I think he started at 12. Now this one will need to shave by the end of the summer. It infuriates the oldest that younger has more facial hair. So...my question: Is 11 the normal age for a boy to be well into puberty? It just seems too young to me! It seemed too young to me, too. I first noticed signs of puberty right around his 11th birthday. He will be 12 in August and the changes over this past year have been dramatic, to say the least. Our GP said he is perfectly normal, and that he was perhaps a few months ahead of the average, but still well within the normal age range for these changes. Burger
A switch turned for my ds right after his 12th birthday. He is still extremely small for his age, but he has definitely started puberty. I was not ready!
elegantlion
My ds started when he was 11, almost 12. He has mustache, sort of, deep voice. He's only 5'4" but our best guesstimates put him about 5'10" at full height.
Peela
11 here too. Actually the physical signs were way behind the emotional ones.
Pretty in Pink
Late 11 - early 12. He's nearly 13 now and has a shadow of a mustache. I thought his face was dirty one day and sent him to wash it a few times before I finally figured out it was peach fuzz on his upper lip. :tongue_smilie:
happi duck
It's bothering us that our son is growing up! Even our daughter says "I want him to be three again!" Our son is kind, mature and looks older. The other day something came up that made him realize he could be his age and didn't need to act the age he appears. I never thought to remind him of that. Riverland
I thought his face was dirty one day and sent him to wash it a few times before I finally figured out it was peach fuzz on his upper lip. :tongue_smilie: Same here! I also kept thinking he had dirt all over his legs. It took me months to adjust to that.

Molly
Although I'm not at this stage, I would imagine there would have to be boys who develop earlier than the norm, because some girls develop far earlier than others.
Mom0012
Nine or older is considered "normal". My son is 11 and the pediatrician told me he was in phase 4, which was a real concern because that could result in him having short stature (even though he is very tall for his age right now because he hit puberty at 9). I took him to a specialist and she said he is in phase 3, perfectly fine and will reach full stature. I really hope she is correct. Carrie12345
11, here. Ds will be 13 next month, and the peach fuzz on his upper lip is getting to be a bit less... peachy. :glare: He's already taller than many of our adult relatives. I think all of this info should be submittable at my next child support hearing. The kid is KILLING me at the grocery store!
Laura Corin
About that age. He overtook me and husband in height at thirteen. Laura
Margo out of lurking
Late 11 - early 12. He's nearly 13 now and has a shadow of a mustache. Mine too. This past year, he's grown leg hair like crazy, had his voice change, and surpassed me in height (I'm 5'8"). He's a little self conscious about being tall right now. readinmom
Oldest ds was much later...I think due to the fact that he was a preemie. Never thought he would grow, now is 6'2. I wasn't ready for ds 2. His voice changed at 12, is now taller than me. I'm with the "I wish he was three again" comment. I miss the sweet little voices!
Robyn
11 here too. Ds is 12 now and at his recent check up, the pedi told us he is in stage 3.
Jennifer in MI
Both my boys started at 13. My oldest has very little facial hair still, has no armpit hair, but has a ton of leg hair. He's over 6' tall and wears a size 14 shoe. Ds13 now has the low voice and that's it. Ds 10 is still my little cuddly boy.
Sugarfoot
Mine was closer to 14, and then he grew about 6 inches in 8 mos. and his voice got really low--all of a sudden--we thought he had a cold or something. He sleeps a lot, and he still doesn't eat like most teen boys. He still eats like a bird. He has some growing and developing left to do, obviously, since in many ways he's just getting started. It's so interesting that everybody has their own timetable. DawnM
My 11 year old is in stage 1 the doc said, almost 2. 13 year old is in stage 5. Yikes. He isn't allowed to grow up.
Renee in NC
My oldest started right at his 11th birthday. My next one hasn't started yet and he is 13. ETA: I am not sure what "phases" are in regards to puberty, so my answer was based on when my ds grew 8+ inches within a couple of months, his voice changed, and he grew hair everywhere. This process started right at his 11th birthday and was mostly done 6 months later. His face continued to mature until about 16 and he has grown another 2-3 inches beyond where he was at 11. My 13yo's voice hasn't changed, he isn't growing hair, but he is already taller than I am (5'6".) I don't consider him to have "started puberty" because he isn't growing that fast. LisaKinVA
My oldest has started puberty (11). I'd say his hormones started kicking in last year (he started getting really emotional, very easilly... ). He has always had thick leg hair (he has thick hair on his head, too). According to him, he has hair growing in some new places as well...:tongue_smilie:, but he hasn't spurted, has no facial hair, no vocal changes, etc. So, I guess he's in the 1st stage, but moving into the 2nd? His foot, however, IS growing (in the typical family way... feet grow first.)His foot is bigger than mine, and he is 7 inches shorter. His foot is an 8.5-9 already. I expect he'll settle in with a size 12-15 shoe like my brothers.
mktkcb
my son was later than most. He really didn't kick in till almost 14. His birthday is in Oct., and he's probably grown 6 in since he turned 14, his voice changed, and he has his moustache :o). Definitely wierd. He was just small for so long. Now he's taller than everyone but his oldest sister, and he'll pass her up pretty soon.
Cricket
Our oldest turned 13 a couple of months ago and is definitely going through it. He's always had a lower voice so that hasn't changed much. He's grown a lot in the last year. He now wears a bigger size shoe than his father. Now that I look back the emotional stuff started about 11. That really threw me for a loop! I was expecting from the girls but not the boys.

Amy in NH
Yup. My 2nd ds grew about 2 feet, developed hair and a deep voice when he was 11. He really hasn't grown much since then, though. So for 3 years now, everyone has thought he's 17. He thinks it's great, except when some chairlift operator tells him he has the wrong (youth) ski ticket and won't let him on! 6packofun
Right before he turned 12 I was noticing a few things--and so sad! LOL
Rhonda in TX
DS hit it just after 14. Lower voice, facial hair, growth spurt. He also seems to be getting broader shoulders. I have a friend whose son hit it at age 11. That did seem early to me, but 14 seemed a little late, compared to other boys. I'm okay with late, though. :)
texasmama
Both of my sons needed deodorant at the age of 8. My 10 1/2 year old has hair under his arms and...ummm, some other places. I find all of this shocking, but their pediatrician has declared it early but in the normal range. Edited July 3, 2011 by texasmama

msjones
Yup. 11 here. And the moodiness is now here in full swing. It makes me so sad; I just wasn't ready. I was sure I had until 12 or 13. It's good to hear I'm not the only sad mama of a boy growing up too quickly. :(
