Homeschool Festivus-Which City?

Location of Festivus-which is best for you?

  1. 1. Location of Festivus-which is best for you?

Hmmm, having had to go out there several years for conventions, I have to disagree with the assumption of there being lots of "cheap, direct flights" ... of course, there are the red-eyes back to the east coat that are direct.

I voted for Dallas, because I could drive (yes, it's two days... but at least we could drive). But, how did these selections come about... I see a dearth of anything east of the Mississippi.

Well, at least from the west coast there are. I voted Sac because it is within driving distance for me.

I imagine Sac would be better from a Bay Area perspective, and that's a big population.

Depends on the time of year, too. I'm not sure I'd schedule it in Reno any time between, say, October and April because of the risk of the pass closing.

If the pass closes, all of us east of the mountains wouldn't be able to reach Sacramento, either. ;)

Maybe that's reason enough to choose Vegas. The lower pass is unlikely to close and there isn't snow in Vegas.

So you're saying I have your sympathy for being forced to live here?:tongue_smilie:

I totally understand the reputation Vegas has but I've been pleasantly surprised at some of the family friendly activities here. We live in the desert but can drive 45 minutes and ski up Mt Charleston or drive 10 minutes and hike Red Rock Canyon from our house.

Flights into the airport here are cheap and plentiful and if everyone objects to being on the strip there is a lovely hotel at the base of Red Rock, aptly called Red Rock Hotel & Casino (of course) and we could enjoy the Festivus while looking at the spectacular mountains here... or hey, you can all come to my house. :D We've got plenty of room....

:iagree:

As long as you stay off the strip, it's not a bad place to live.

DH is military and we have not once, in seventeen years, gotten a vote on where we were stationed... there could be worse places, trust me. I've BTDT.

We have family in the Henderson area. It's not that bad. Way too citified for my taste though.

Other: Regina or Saskatoon, please.

Would LOVE this. However...just so you northerners know (if you don't already), coming to Canada as a U.S. citizen and accepting any sort of compensation requires weirdly massive amounts of paperwork unless there's some sort of organizing institution that files the relevant forms. When a U.S.A. speaker goes across the border into Canada, the customs officials ask: Are you receiving any compensation for speaking?" If we say "Yes" (which is the honest answer even if we're only getting reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses), we're required to stop and fill out forms that ask for all sorts of financial disclosures which are not always easy to make.

Tricky. I love Canada, but it's usually easiest to visit under the sponsorship of some larger group that takes care of the paperwork.

I understand. I know it was a pie-in-the-sky request, but a girl can dream, eh? :001_smile:

I would love Portland, but would figure something out for Sacramento. At least I have family in the area and they would probably let me sleep there.

I live right outside Sacramento. I'm sure I could save hotel costs for a WTM mom or two if they don't object to sleeping in bunk beds. :tongue_smilie:

I'm having a hard time voting - two or three of the choices (Sacramento, Vegas, Roswell) would probably work out for me.

Portland or Denver would be even better!!

I just finished reading through the thread this originated from and I think a Festivus is a fantastic idea!! I hope it comes to fruition.

May I make a suggestion? (I have to get back to studying, and can't spend any more time fussing over how to post a poll) How about a poll asking what area a person "would probably attend", with the choices something like Central Texas, Central California, Seattle/Portland (there were so many write-ins) or I'd come to any west of the Mississippi.

That way we could look towards who is *serious* about this. :) Also, since there are plenty who only haunt the K8 and HS boards, might we try there, too? Ooohing and ahhhing is all fine and dandy, but if we want this to happen, perhaps a more solid clarification on where, and then to find a victim (I mean volunteer) to do a little footwork in that area????? What say ye, ladies?

So, going by the poll, I would say...Sacramento for fall 2011, Austin for fall 2012?

That, of course, assumes someone in the Sacramento area would do the legwork, since Jennifer's in the Austin group.

Anyone up for it? I have friends in Sacramento, so I have a place to stay. :-)

SWB

Can you define legwork? What needs to happen?

My guess would be:

-choose a date

-define the event - what will the festivus entail - and research possible venues

-poll for headcount commitments and collect $ for any reservation deposits you have to maker

-reserve a venue (probably involves a deposit) - also reserve a block of hotel rooms and any banquet meals/appetizers for the group

Short list off the top of my head:tongue_smilie:.

Where are we on this? If no one wants to organize something in Sacramento this year, I'll do something in Dallas or help someone with Austin this year and we could do Sacramento in 2012.

Anyone?

I'm happy to help in Dallas, Austin or Houston!

Yes! Denver!

Denver is so very do able.

I am also close enough that I could cook weird food for people like me with weird food allergies.

:party:And SWB said she'd meet us. I'd make it to most place 12 hours from Denver for a Festivus for the rest-of-us with her there.

Surely someone from Sacramento can help? I'm in the Willamette Valley, but have family near Sacramento so I could attend that one easily. Of course if Portland or Seattle made its way back onto the short list I would be good with that too. Might even help to make it happen. :D

Have you seen the idea from SWB over in the You Won't Believe the Email thread that is active on 29 March 11?
