  2. I can’t find my last post about this, so I hope it’s OK to post this information again. Our dc, 18 and 15 are both taking classes at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL this semester. I received this email from the coordinator of their homeschool pilot program. Dear Homeschooling Families, We would love to host even more homeschooled students for this event! Please feel free to share the message below with the appropriate students, parents, group and loops. Any student from any state is welcome. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. *International students are welcome to apply, too. They can do their interviews via Skype. Blessings, Jennifer Greetings from Trinity International University. I know that many of your students are thinking through the college search process, which is one of the most important decisions they will make. At Trinity, we are committed to serious-minded, thoughtful Christian higher education that seeks to form the hearts and minds of students, who will be used to transform the world for Christ. As many are considering college options, we invite you to encourage them to look at Trinity during our upcoming Presidential Scholars Weekend. Our annual Presidential Scholars Weekend on January 26-27, 2018. Participants will have the opportunity to compete for the Presidential scholarships (covering tuition, room, board, and required fees), the Regents’ scholarships (full-tuition and required fees), the Dean’s scholarships ($20,000), and the Faculty scholarships ($17,000). On Friday night, January 26, the Trinity Honors Program will be sponsoring a formal banquet where students and parents will have the opportunity to spend extended time with our faculty and staff. Following the banquet, there will be opportunities for students to meet and engage with current Trinity students. Participants will also have the option to stay in the residence halls that evening with a current student. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, the competition will include interviews with faculty members, group discussions, essays, as well as a lunch for the students. In order to participate, students must complete one of two options: Option 1: Apply for admission to the Trinity Honors Program. Students admitted to the Honors Program qualify automatically for the Presidential Scholars Weekend and additional scholarships. You may apply to the honors program at tiu.edu/honors. Applicants must have a 25 ACT and 3.75 GPA or a 28 ACT and a 3.5 GPA with a positive academic recommendation to be considered for admission to the Honors Program. Option 2: Students with 28 ACT and a 3.75 GPA may request the opportunity to enter the competition by invitation. Students invited to participate will receive email notification of their selection. You may request an invitation at tiu.edu/scholarshipcompetition. A Trinity education is built on our Christ-centered mission, a strong liberal arts-based foundation, and a committed faculty who are experts in their discipline. Moreover, we are looking for the best and brightest students to join Trinity’s long tradition of preparing students who will make a difference in the world for the sake of Christ and His church. We look forward to having your students join us for this important weekend on Trinity’s campus. Cordially, Jordan Bryant Director of Undergraduate Admissions jbryant@tiu.edu - 847-317-7000
  3. I received this email from the Director of Admissions at TIU. DC 18 and 15 have been taking courses at TIU this semester and it's been a wonderful experience. TIU is incredibly welcoming to homeschooled students. The Director of Admissions and his wife were both homeschooled. Out of 7 students in our DC’s Music Theory class, 5 were homeschooled. 4. Here's an email I received from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL. Trinity is reaching out to the homeschooling community in a variety of ways; their Director of Admissions (and his wife) were both homeschooled. This email was sent by the executive assistant to one of the VP's - she's a former homeschooling mom. Hello Homeschooling Families! Do you need to "round out" your curriculum for your high schooler this fall? Do you need to challenge your student a bit more as a junior or senior? Are you still looking for a good Bible or Spanish curriculum? Look no further! Trinity has additional fall '17 options for dual enrollment and dual credit! See below for details. We are offering as online dual enrollment: BI 101 Understanding the Old Testament - 3 credit hours - A survey of the setting, history and literature of the Old Testament. Emphasis is given to major Old Testament themes, including covenant, salvation, worship, wisdom, justice and righteousness, and messianic hope. BI 111 Understanding the New Testament - 3 credit hours - A survey of the setting, history, and literature of the New Testament. Emphasis is given to major New Testament themes, including the person and work of Jesus Christ, the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the theology of Paul, and the Christian in society. These courses begin October 2nd, 2017. We have only five spots in each class, so it is first come, first serve, one class per student. We are offering as on-campus dual credit: SP 121 Introductory Spanish - 4 credit hours - Pronunciation, conversation, reading, and grammar. Laboratory activities. Collateral reading with reports during the second semester. As far as possible, the course is conducted in Spanish. This course will be twelve weeks long beginning September 26th, 2017, and meets from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We need 8-10 students to run this course. Please register for both types of courses online at tiu.edu/dualcredit. Please select either "online dual enrollment" or "homeschoool dual credit" The registration deadline is September 18th. Please feel free to contact me at jflanagan@tiu.edu or 847-317-7055 with any questions. We look forward to partnering with you! Blessings, Jennifer
  5. Calling all homeschooling parents! We are eager to hear from you! Trinity International University, in conjunction with the local homeschool community, is launching a homeschool dual credit program this fall! This program will allow students to pursue higher education coursework while still in high school, taught by supportive college instructors who teach from a Christian worldview. This program will include many resources for homeschooling students and families, in addition to the courses themselves. Students in this program will have access to Trinity facilities such as the Rolfing Library, the fitness center, and the University Student Success Center, and to events such as Chapel, concerts, athletic competitions, college-prep workshops and more. To kick-off this collaboration, we’d like to invite you to a vision night, Thursday, July 20, 2017, from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Norton Welcome Center on the TIU Campus. Please join with Trinity College Admissions Staff and the Trinity College Dean in this program-shaping opportunity. This is a very exciting time to connect with Trinity College, and we'd be delighted to hear from you. Please pass this on to others who may be interested. For questions regarding this event, please contact Jennifer Flanagan at jflanagan@tiu.edu or 847-317-7055. To allow for an appropriate hosting capacity, intention of attendance notifications (also directed to Jennifer) are appreciated.
  6. Thank you! I'm addressing a group of teens at a youth group event this evening. I got this! ðŸ‘
  7. Which is correct, "I got this," or I've got this?" I assume the latter, although "I got this" seems to be increasingly popular in informal English.
  8. Ds 17 just participated in the 360 Leadership Institute at Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL, where he earned 3 college credits for $500. How I wish I had thought to post it here earlier! During the Institute, the students live on campus where they attend classes, listen to speakers, attend chapel, participate in team building activities and take field trips to places like the Art Insttiute in Chicago. They also participate in daily mentor groups where they explore career interests from a Christian perspective. Room and board, all activities fees, and three college credits are included in the fee - usually more than $1000 per credit hour. But get this, his certificate of completion entitles him to $500 per year in scholarship money if he decides to attend college at Trinity! He's also eligible for another $500 because I attended the Parent's Day Preview while he was there. And they waived the application fee. The best part of the experience was that he had a blast living on campus, and it was a great opportunity for him to explore whether Trinity is a fit for him. He plans to attend the Leadership Institute again next year (and will receive another $2000 in scholarship money if he does so). Put it on your calendar for June of next year if you have a student who migh be interested in attending and feel free to messaged me with questions. https://undergrad.tiu.edu/student-life/student-involvement/emerging-leaders/360-institute/
  9. I'd forgotten about The Teenage Liberation Handbook - thank you! And Cal Newport's book is the one I was trying to remember :001_smile:
  10. I'm trying to remember the name of a book - it's about kids getting out of the rat race of AP classes and homework overload and pursuing their passions in HS - it contains several amazing stories about kids who pursued their passions and got into college - what college admissions personnel are looking for in incoming students, etc. Thank you! :001_smile:
  11. Donate them to the local library?
  12. Hi Prairie Song! Although following this thread provided me with the motivation to keep going, it was reading the book that really inspired me to get started. I was inspired to keep only the things that bring me joy. It has been so freeing to get rid of clutter. I'm finding that burdens that I didn't even realize I was carrying are being lifted. I'm tackling projects that I have been putting off for years, and finding myself feeling more at home in my home than I have in a long time. I'm not finished yet, but I'm well on my way. If you haven't read the book yet, that might be a place to start :001_smile:
  13. After going through my school supplies, all I can say is, "Hello, my name is Laurie. I have too many school supplies and my closet has become unmanageable." :blushing: That said, I discovered that I had lots of little empty white boxes that I got from a jewelry store - they're just the right size for paper clips, erasers, rubber bands, etc. so things are definitely looking tidier. :001_smile:
  14. How has tidying the KonMari way magically changed your life? When I'm finished tidying, I will let you know how it changes mine :hat:
  15. The printer paper's not the problem - it's the file folders, divider tabs, blank checks for the printer, pocket folders, page protectors and other stuff that gets jumbled together and eventually begins to slide off the shelf that needs to be relocated :tongue_smilie: I just bought this at the Container Store. :001_smile:
  16. Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I agree that it makes sense to stack reams of copy paper horizontally (we have 2 1/2 of them). I think I'll store the miscellaneous items (assorted manila envelopes, page protectors, pocket folders, notebook dividers) vertically. These items tend to get buried in the stacks; yesterday I found all sorts of supplies that I didn't remember I had :blushing: Meanwhile, I Konmaried a ream of legal sized paper that dh bought about 10 years ago by mistake. Ds 13 cut it up into 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of paper (which we will use) and the leftover strips of paper are just the right size for making lists. Of course, I'm storing the leftover scraps of paper vertically :tongue_smilie: He also cut some smaller pieces of paper that I can use to make little notes to myself. I put them in a little empty metal tin that had been sitting empty in the closet. It's just the right size to hold the note paper, and the repurposed tin brings me joy :001_smile:
  17. Maire Kondo would say, "Just choose the ornaments and decorations that spark joy. They will be exactly the right amount for your next Christmas tree." :)
  18. Any suggestions for storing office supplies and school supplies like copy paper, notebook paper, graph paper, divider tabs, pocket folders, etc.? I know Marie Kondo says to store everything vertically, if possible, which would make it easier to access paper than pulling it out from the bottom of a stack. But I haven't figured out an easy way to store supplies vertically
  19. If having your mom's things around you is a comfort to you, you should definately keep them.
  20. Their website looks amazing! Thank you! This could be just what she is looking for!
  21. I have a friend who has MCS, environmental illness, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. She lives in Allen, TX, with her husband and thier 13 year old son who is a high school freshman. She is also one of the primary care providers for her mother who is has very advanced Alzheimer's / Dementia. She is seeking someone who can assist her with her many tasks and challenges. This person would need to be sensitive to her scheduling needs (able to work evenings and weekends) and her chemical sensitivities (no cologne, perfumes, etc.). She is seeking someone who can run errands, schedule appointments, make phone calls, and do some light cleaning in her home. Please PM me if interested. Thank you!
