  1. We had one for ten years of reliable service. When we no longer needed a minivan, we bought another Toyota. ;)
  2. DD's graduation was Friday night, so we missed Coach Bowden. :(
  3. Consider Jacksonville, too, if you liked Tampa. We've been here since 1991 (with a break to attend law school in VA), and I wouldn't live anywhere else. We *love* Florida.
  4. My daughter graduated from FSU last week (WOOT!) and the trend was church/office casual. For adults, there were lots of khakis, button-down shirts, summer dresses, women in slacks, etc. I don't think I saw anyone in a suit, but I did see a few sports coats. College-aged students and younger were in more casual clothing (including jeans). I saw few (if any) t-shirts, so your instinct toward a polo or button-up shirt for your son seems to be a good one. I think your choices above will be just right. :) And congratulations to your son!
  5. We're hosting a German exchange student next year and I sent her a care package of uniquely American candy/treats recently. She really liked the chocolate-covered potato chips and Reese's cups. She didn't like Peeps. ;) If you would like for me to run any ideas past her family to see if they're appropriate, I'd be glad to do so. Lisa
  6. Summer Glau was on that Terminator spin-off, "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which was only on for two seasons.
  7. Facial recognition is a right brain activity. Right brain weakness is common in autism -- especially Asperger's, and in Nonverbal Learning Disability. So, IMO, it's very possible that your son's problems with facial recognition are completely understandable, given his autism.
  8. DD's boyfriend called me Mrs. LastName for the first year (when he was still in HS). He's been given permission to call me by my first name, but I've found that he calls me "Miss Lisa" more than he actually calls me Lisa. I think he still feels a bit odd calling me by my first name. ;)
  9. Actually, my version has a little bit of mashed potatoes. That doesn't make it Irish, of course.
  10. I really like Almost Human and Intelligence. I'll be sad to see them go. I've watched the Mentalist from season one, and I'll be disappointed if they can it, but I'd have to agree that it has jumped the track lately. It's a great show when Lisbon and Jane are working together. I'm not sure why they've spun off in another direction.
  11. You need at least 14 feet width to have an island, so you do seem to have space. The issue, then, is whether you can move the main items (sink/stove/oven/fridge/dw) around in a way that works for your family. This website may be helpful for some of the things you're trying to envision: http://starcraftcustombuilders.com/kitchen.design.rules.htm I used that one a lot when I was trying to design our new kitchen layout. Here's another that may help: http://hgrm.sndimg.com/HGRM/2011/09/09/Kitchen-Island-Checklist-100.pdf Also, go to ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/ and upload a drawing on graph paper to show what you've got and what's been suggested. The people there are very helpful in critiquing/tweaking layouts!
  12. "Son of a big-eared..." "Crappy-doodles" "Frell" "God Bless America!" "Jiminy Crickets" "Kyarn" (a FIL original) "Chingaletta" (a FIL adaptation)
  13. My son doesn't have celiac disease, but he is gluten intolerant. "On" gluten, he's all those ("unhappy, mean, and difficult") as well as hyper, loud, clumsy and angry. His sleep suffers, his bathroom *reeks,* and he's just hard to deal with. Nothing makes him happy; the smallest disappointments make him livid. When he's off gluten entirely, it's like he is a different child: funny, calmer, happy. Normal. FWIW, he may have a bit of a withdrawal period during which he is like a drug addict -- achey, grumpy, irritable. It gets better if you stick with it (and if he doesn't sneak gluten). HIH, Lisa
  14. Love my Samsung French door fridge. :) FWIW, I also have two Frigidaire 16.7 c.f."all" fridge or"all" freezer units in the garage. They're very versatile: each can be configured as "all fridge" or "all freezer." They're exactly the same unit, but we have one set to "fridge," and one to "freezer." They weren't terribly expensive. They were about $500 each 5 years ago. They're not pretty, but they're very functional. When we renovated this house, we seriously considered just using the two units instead of a typical fridge with freezer. Ultimately, we didn't -- mainly because they don't have icemakers, and bc DH loves having ice and water on the door.
  15. The first year, we purchased a university meal plan (she lived in the dorm). The main things (tuition, dorm, meals, books) were paid by her scholarships. We gave her a small amount of money weekly for "everything else." She had to budget her money to cover toiletries, movies/entertainment, gas and fast food. The first year, we put spending money in her account weekly. The second year, we put it into her account twice a month, and this year (her senior year), we deposit money monthly, so she has gradually learned to budget for longer periods of time. HIH, Lisa
  16. Yep. That sounds like a gluten sensitivity/addiction. People often crave the food that's the most toxic to them. Pancakes, tortillas, sandwiches, pizza -- all gluten heavy. Hot dogs and some lunch meats have gluten, too, so he's eating tons of gluten. Before we went GF, my son used to try to eat only gluten/dairy. He was a processed carb addict: pasta, bread, pizza, bagels... He'd eat the breading off a chicken finger and leave the protein. He craved mac and cheese (which contained both of the things he needed least: gluten and dairy). He'd pull the toppings off the pizza and eat the crust. It sounds like it's time to eliminate *all* sources of gluten from his diet for a few weeks. If the stomach aches decrease, you'll have your answer. Lisa
  17. Our dog neither vomited nor pooped in the house today. (He's been ill, so he'd been on a "roll" of doing one or the other...) I watched Sherlock on dvr and lamented the fact that episode 3 won't be out for another week. It was almost 70 degrees here today, but the weather man says we might have near-freezing rain by Weds. That's all I've got. Pretty boring.
  18. From another Lisa, and another Florida student... ;) We had no trouble, either. DD's credits at CC counted toward both HS and college.
  19. I have a composite granite single undermount, too. FWIW, to those who prefer a second bowl so you can keep one side "dirty" and one clean, mine has a raised lip on the right side. It allows me to put a couple of things aside, even while I wash other things. This is the one I have: http://www.homeperfect.com/blanco-440065-performa-silgranit-ii-cascade-super-single-bowl-undermount-sink-in-biscuit-515-554.html ~L
  20. What would happen if he was required to do all chores, self-care, etc., BEFORE he was allowed tech time or play time? "Son, you're growing up now and it's important to learn to be on time and ready when needed. I love you too much to let you become someone who is often late, so I'm going to teach you how to be on time." Then, post a daily list of self-care (brush teeth, get dressed, eat, etc.) in his room. Also, give him a day-specific list (do X chores, do pages 23-26 in this workbook, etc.) and tell him that he will have computer time or game time after *both* lists are complete. If you have an early appointment, just cut his list shorter and have an after-appointment list, too. Hopefully, this will set him up for success. Hugs, Lisa
  21. Chocolate peanut butter fudge, of course. It uses all three: chocolate, pb and marshmallow. :)
  22. My son reacts to gluten with extreme hyperactivity. He also gets angry, irritable, irrational and impulsive. Removing gluten completely has made a huge difference for my son. HIH, Lisa
