Katy
How do you pronounce it? I thought it was similar to epic but I just heard someone say e-pock and now I’m confused.
City Mouse
When I just searched for it.https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/epoch This does show both pronunciations, the second pronunciation with the long e as British. Terabith
I always said eh-pick, but I'm from the South and maybe not the most reliable pronunciator. Especially of Pokemon. 4

Katy
Ok, having been raised in the South and finding two pronunciation guides that say opposite ways, I’m now thinking it’s regional.

I always thought they were homophones.

I’m pretty sure I first learned the word in elementary school and that’s how the teacher pronounced it. I remember being confused by the spelling but I don’t think I ever looked it up, which means it was probably before 4th grade when we switched to dictionaries with origins. Halftime Hope
eh-puhk = epoch for US northern midwesterners and for US southerners that I know. eh-pick = epic I had never heard EE-pahk until I heard of the Epoch news service. I suppose if I heard it mentioned in a British history documentary, I might have heard EE-pock there, too.

I am somewhere between eh-pukh and eh-pic if I say it without thinking about it. It does sound different than epic.

silver
I grew up in the midwest, only ever hearing ep-ik. But I've encountered other people who were raised in the midwest that only ever heard it ee-pock. It must be regional, but in really small clusters. Kanin
I don't know if I've ever heard it spoken out loud. In my mind it's always been eh-pock.
