Good news thread

(1) I have been working as a programmer for an airline since 1989. I was able to work half-time and homeschool for many years. Eventually, I had to work 30hrs/wk to maintain health benefits for the family, and a few years ago, a co-worker retired and my boss persuaded me to go full-time. I have been working with this airline all along, but through spin-off and buy-out, the airline is now my client.  I started asking to work half-time with health benefits last year because I wanted a better work-life balance.  I got nowhere. On Dec 1, I told my boss that since I could not work half-time and get health benefits, I was resigning as of Dec 31. In 2 days, I was offered half-time work with health benefits!  The folks I work with at the airline intervened and my company made an exception for me. Yay!

I could go on a rant at this point about corporations and health insurance and shackles, but I won't.

(2) On Jan 1, I got my very first pension check from this airline. I was not supposed to get it until I turned 65yo, but because of the buy-out last year, I was able to get it at 62yo. Woohoo! It feels like free money, but I earned it long, long ago.

My DH has been unemployed for a couple months but he flew out for an in-person interview yesterday that has a 99% chance of them making him an offer for an ideal job. And housing would be 1/3 the cost of what we're currently paying.

Oh wow!! Sending all the good thoughts his way.  Sounds perfect.

Our refrigerator died on Tuesday, and the new one is arriving tomorrow afternoon. At the moment, we have all of our cold/frozen groceries spread throughout the house.  Some is in the spare fridge in the garage, along with one of my son's dorm fridge.  Then other things are in the camper fridge, and my DH has two plug-in coolers in his room.  It's been crazy running from room to room to find our food.  I can't wait to have it all in one place again! 😀

Ds opened some mail from December (when I had the flu and wasn’t intercepting important looking mail) and discovered he got a scholarship he applied for. The amount coupled with a generous merit scholarship makes one of his schools affordable!

Wow!! Congratulations to him!!

Wow, that worked out great.  Congratulations

My 14 yo dd is a freshman in school for the first time. She was asked to the winter formal by a (16 yo!) boy. That is NOT the good news.

She told him she wanted to go with her friends but she would see him there and could hang out some if he wanted. I thought that was a great response. Then she said “I wish parents could chaperone so I just knew you were around if I needed to talk during the dance.”

I’ve just been kind of tickled all day that she has had the confidence to decline the invite from the older boy and that she talks to her mom and would even welcome me as a chaperone. I didn’t talk to my parents about anything! (And my boys sure wouldn’t have wanted me as a chaperone 😂).

She definitely is confident enough to go without me and I’m not going to try to chaperone…it just struck me funny.

What a beautiful thread! Just what I needed before heading to bed. I watch a children's news channel every day with my kids in my native language - and there is almost always some random bit of good news from around the world in there. My kids have argued that it makes the bad news that is reported all the time more bearable.

I didn't know whether to "heart" or "laugh" emoji at this one.

We had a baby 2 weeks ago! We now have 4 boys and a tiny girl. Girl clothes are so much cuter-they have all these tiny details-and I'm having a blast dressing her.

Congratulations!!! I had three boys and then a girl. I never longed for a girl but wow she turned my life upside down in the best way possible. She is the only one left at home now and I just am loving every minute with her. Enjoy!

I think we always need a good news thread, you are right.  It makes so much sense to find the positive things in life (big or small) too.

Awww congrats!!!!!  A baby, the cutest thing ever.  I have the opposite, 4 girls and one boy.  So neat to have both.  Have fun dressing her!

We are finally going to be in Guatemala on Good Friday to see the sawdust carpets (and we'll see a few other beautiful things too).

If you have time, I highly recommend a couple special experiences in Guatemala.

The historic city of Antigua is beautiful and fascinating. Well worth any time spent there. The city offers a police escort if you ask (called Tourist Police)—essential if you intend to hike.

We did a tour of a coffee plantation with a ride on their mountain zip line. There is nothing like zip lining over the trees down a mountain. Unbelievably gorgeous and exhilarating.

We took a tour with a wonderful archaeologist to look at the Olmec heads. Fascinating! And the heads look hilarious up close. They’re just funny huge stone heads from long ago.

We enjoyed a hike up a live volcano. My kids were so thrilled to poke a stick in actual lava seepage. We still have the stick. If you choose to do this, wear good shoes with thick soles. Do not wear sandals of any sort. Bring gardening gloves. Lava rock is very sharp.

Have a wonderful trip!!

Today is our 15th wedding anniversary and we are more in love than we could have ever imagined. I married my best friend and couldn't have asked for a better partner.

We are celebrating our anniversary with a trip to Puerto Rico just the two of us. We've been here since the 11th and get how late on the 17th. We are having a blast and already know we're coming back here next January with all the kids.

I get a 3 day weekend this week!   A close friend is coming over for the day tomorrow.

We are finally going on a family vacation for the first time in a while due to a foster child we couldn't take out of state, covid, and dad's health.
