Popular Post Kim in Appalachia
I got into the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at our local CC and I'm very excited. So we moved to TX in Sept of 2016, and put the 3 boys in school. I started subbing at the school district and then started thinking about what I'd like to do with the rest of my life. I had planned on going back to work full time. I have a degree in business, acually finance, but haven't worked in 23 years. I started thinking about maybe getting my teaching certificate and while looking throught the college program stumbled across the OTA program. I needed to do pre-recq's and get in shadowing hours. The program is highly competive with an avg GPA of 3.7 for those who apply. They only take 20 new students a year. I worked hard, taking A&P 1 and 2 over the summer in two 5 weeks blocks, then took a medical terminology course, a PSYC course and retook Comp 101 (not my best grade from 1988). I got all A's and found out this past weekend that I got accepted. It's a 2 year course and I'm so pumped. This is a huge shift and will be a lot of work, but I can't wait to get started in January. I went to my orientation meeting and ordered scrubs. :) I thought I'd share my update. I know a lot of fellow former and current homeschoolers on here have gone back to school and I wanted to share what I'd be doing now that I'm no longer homeschooling.

Angie in VA
I wish I'd known about this job when I chose a career. I bet I am older than you, but I'd love to do this. I penciled it all out 2 years ago, but our time, money, and energy was spent on our last child at home. We got him in college classes and those paid off big, so I don't regret it. Still, in a perfect world, we could have both been taking classes. Congrats! I'm so happy for you!!! :hurray:
Crimson Wife
 Congrats! Are you considering going for your master's at some point? FWIW, I hear rumors that OT may require a clinical doctorate in the near future (like physical therapy and audiology have already switched to) so that's something to keep in mind when deciding on your goals. Those with current certification will be "grandfathered" in when the academic requirements change.

(I’m a preschool special ed teacher & considered switching but just can’t face going back to college) Lots of job opportunities- early childhood, schools, hospitals, nursing homes.... Good luck!

Those with current certification will be "grandfathered" in when the academic requirements change. While that an option for me, it's not something I am considering. I'll be turning 50 by the time I finish this job. We have 3 more kids to get through college and the cost and time commitment for a bridge masters program would just be not doable. Nor do I think at my age do I want to do that. I'm kind of looking forward to doing the level of work that the OTA does compared to the OT. The OT evaluates and writes the plan. It's a lot of paperwork. I want the hands on at this point in my life. :D My dh did say, that if I wanted that extra degree later he would totally support that. We'll see.
