SunnyDays
I have to admit, I wouldn't have pegged Ireland for the first country to make it happen, though.

Frances
There's a great article on the NY Times website about an older Catholic couple who have been married for more than 50 years and have a gay son. They made a video encouraging others to vote yes and the video went viral. The video is very moving and their profound love and acceptance of their son is very evident. It's my understanding that the results are showing widespread support for gay marriage across all different demographics.

umsami
First country to legalize gay marriage in a popular vote! Yeah! And to think divorce was illegal not too long ago!

Laura Corin
I have to admit, I wouldn't have pegged Ireland for the first country to make it happen, though. It's not the first country to legalise Gay marriage - Great Britain already has, and I don't think it's the first. I believe Ireland was the first to legalise it by referendum to amend the constitution. The UK doesn't have a constitution, so it went through with a vote in Parliament.

We've had legal gay marriage in Canada for more than 10 years.

Ravin
So...do you think this will convince the organizers of the larger St. Patrick's Day Parades in the U.S. to stop discriminating against GLBT groups who want to participate?

Elfknitter.#
Sounds superfluous but... Got my monthly mani/pedi today. Found an awesome green color today. So very happy for my "adoptive" Irish sisters and their families today.
Laura Corin
She said by popular vote. I think the Irish deserve to be proud. I see what you mean. When Sunnydays said 'make it happen' I thought she meant 'make gay marriage happen', but she was meaning 'make it happen by popular vote'. Anyway - great day.

Vera
The best part of the story for me is the large numbers of Irish citizens living overseas that flew back to Ireland to vote yes. Dd (12) even teared up when she heard that.
Lady Florida.
I'm so happy for them. Somewhere over there I have distant relatives who don't even know I exist. I hope they're among those who are celebrating. Why Ireland though? I'm happy too, I am just a little confused. The reason it's such a big deal is because of the close relationship between government and a specific religion that considers being gay a sin.
FaithManor
I have a tiny bit of Irish in me, tiny. But it's being very proud right now. Equality under the law is soooo important for everyone even if some do not recognize it.
