Favorite Read-alouds of all time :-)

Recommended Posts

I love read alouds and like these threads every once in a while to make sure we haven't missed something amazing.

I'll start with some of our all-time favorites!

- owls in the family (amazing!)

- my side of the mountain (our most recent book)

- the great brain series

- lion witch and wardrobe (childhood favorite)

- little house series

- mysterious Benedict series

I'll stop there, though I am sure I have many more that I'm forgetting at the moment!

My boys had favorites that at the time they were so excited about, but now they don't remember them much - or being excited about them.

The current favorite is the Ranger's Apprentice series that Dh is reading outloud to the boys. Dh started book 7 this evening. (Which in all oddness comes before book 5 and 6)

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Holes

Mio, My Son

The Thirteen Clocks (I think this was my favorite to read)

A Stranger at Green Knowe

Impunity Jane (a sentimental favorite of mine)

Thimble Summer (read with accents)

We are really enjoying Momo, but haven't finished it yet.

Audio books that DD has loved, and listened to multiple times:
A Bear Called Paddington (narrated by Stephen Fry)

Because of Winn-Dixie

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (narrated by Jim Dale)

I wish I'd kept better track because it's already hard for me to remember, but I'll always have a soft spot for The Wizard of Oz as a read aloud because it was the first one my kids sat through when very little. Catwings would be another when they were little and I was trying to get them used to shorter chapter books. Also, The Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte's Web, Homer Price, and Pippi Longstocking. Little Britches is a more recent favorite, as well as Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

Some of our favorites have already been mentioned.  I'll add:

Homer Price:  Our book has been read so many times that it's almost in tatters.  I think I'm on our fifth read aloud through it - it's on my 7yods schedule this week but all of the kids keep gathering around to listen.  We were on the yarn story yesterday - if you've ever read, you'll understand how fun it was for me to watch my 7yo's eyes as he tried to figure out how Miss Terwillinger won the contest!

Understood Betsy

The Little White Horse

The Chestry Oak

After these three, then:

Chronicles of Narnia (in the order published, of course! :D )

Mary Poppins (series)

101 Dalmations (NOT Disney)

One which I cannot read aloud because I cry the ugly cry at the end for happiness is "Hurry Home, Candy." My dc had to read that on their own, lol.

I'm excited to try my hand with many of the books listed here! Thanks for posting!

My grandchildren are still quite young and my very favorite read aloud's are the Little Bear books by Elsa Holmelund Minarik. They have proved to be a terrific platform for further made up episodes.

Banjo Grannie is another favorite of the children's. It includes a song I sing which invariably gets them up and dancing. Again, many made up stories have resulted all starting in Owen's fabulous bed in the alcove.

I've seen many of my favorites listed but the first one that came to mind when you asked this question:

Wolf Story by William McCleery

My boys laughed and laughed as I read this one aloud.

It's the first one that came to my mind, too!

Next was Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf by Catherine Storr.  Funny stuff.

And yes, I agree with Kareni: George and Martha--we loved, loved, loved those.

I love how many people are saying they loved Despereaux. I love reading that book. It's a book that  both my boys just listen to...you know really really listen and think about. We have a hardback version and it's always an experience. The spine of the book read first, ... it's a treasured book and story here.

I hope my dd has the same feeling when I read it to her.

Another we really love that I didn't mention are George MacDonald books...The light Princess, Princess and the Goblin.

For little ones. Little Bear. Always Little Bear. All my kids loved those stories!

The Indian in the Cupboard

Pippi Longstocking

The Magician's Nephew (for some reason this one went down better than the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe so we stopped the series for now)

Because of Winn Dixie (she read this herself then asked me to read it to her again)

Mrs Piggle Wiggle

The Wheel on the School

Grimm's Fairy Tales (I didn't think she'd like them, but she keeps asking for them)

These are the ones I remember her being more excited about than others though there are numerous more she enjoyed.

For my younger child so far:

Berenstain Bears (esp The Spooky Tree)

Mess Monsters

Little Bear

Mike Mulligan and his steam shovel

Owen

Bedtime for Frances

She's only just started to listen to slightly longer stories with attention, so will gradually move to Blueberries for Sal and Make Way for Ducklings as her attention span improves.

Our absolute favorite read aloud ever was the Deltora Quest series.  My husband even requested that we only read in the evenings because he wanted to hear them, too!  I reread the series a couple years ago to myself and it was like greeting an old friend.

I forgot this one:

     The Story of Ferdinand

My favorite quote from it:

"His mother saw that he was not lonesome, and because she was an understanding mother, even though she was a cow, she let him just sit there and be happy."
