This is for my ds12. I enrolled him in the 2-wk Latin 100 trial pending on Karen Karpinnen's approval to officially take him on the class. She said it's a college preparatory course that would take a student through the first 17 chapters of Oerberg's Lingua Latina. I told her that ds took MEmoria Press's Henle Units 1-2 last year and she said that she can't take him if he's going to take both Memoria Press Henle and Latin 100 classes. I chose Latin 100 and will just continue with Henle on our own. At least, this is my plan. FWIW, all of us are slowly reading through Lingua Latina.

We're doing:

History- Mosaic Introduction to History, Part I with Timeline from Biblioplan

Read-Alouds- SL read-alouds from Core1

Music-Piano

Arts-handleonthearts...their chronological curriculum

Science-RealScience4Kids, Biology--Level 1

LA-T4L

Art- projects from Mosaic

Math-T4L and memorization. When memorization is complete we'll go back to our regular combo schedule of MCP, Singapore, and Saxon.

Gym- Homeschool gym class, soccer...and deciding between Tae Kwon Do, Judo, or Boxing.

I think that's it, but I'm probably missing something or other!

Here is what we'll be using:

Calvert Math (level to be determined)

For ds7

Calvert (level to be determined, maybe 3)

Calvert Math (level to be determined, maybe 6)

For ds4

Dancing Bears reading

A bunch of math books

Goals:

To save Mommy from massive burn out

Just to add my .02 re: Calvert. We have used grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 and, imo, grade 6 really kicks it up a notch. It is written to the student, so that makes it easier on the parent, which is one your goals (as was mine). My 11 yo did grade 6 this past year (so basically when she was 10) and she did fine, but it was a LOT of work for her. They "assign" a lot and she learned a lot about note-taking, which was necessary to pass the tests. She is a very strong reader and a good writer, but she still felt overwhelmed at times. You may want to think about ds's "emotional" (is that the word I am looking for? maturity?) readiness as well as the results of the placement test. It could be that he would do great, but I just wanted to share our experience. We are actually going to "redo" parts of 6th grade with other programs this year before we think about the possibility of Calvert 7, just to cement things in her brain.

As for my 7yo -- she just finished 3rd and while she had an easier time (she placed into 3, that is why we put her in it a year early), it was still a lot of work for her, too. Calvert can be "rigid" and it helps if you can be flexible with your time. We did the ATS this year so there were times we got stressed trying to get the tests in.

Again, just my opinion. Good luck!

It seems like a lot but my DD loves workbooks and reading, and I can easily cut back on them if she seems burnt out:

1) FIAR, with an approximately 30 minute lesson/project per day, alternating geography/social studies/history, language arts, fine art, bible/character study, and science/cooking.

2) Singapore EB math workbooks

3) ETC workbook- I'm starting with book 3 because she is already reading second grade level books

4) HWT - The pre-K getting ready to write workbook (I forget the actual name)

5) 15 minutes reading practice daily, and daily read-aloud from a chapter book before bed.

6) two hours of dance classes per week

7) two hours of Mandarin Chinese pre-k classes per week.

8) lots of field trips, music, singing, dressing up, role playing, exploring outdoors, gardening, board card and memory games, fine motor skills practice with things like beads, cutting and pasting, etc.

My goal is to keep reading practice and bookwork to under 1:30 per day. This past year we spent about 30 minutes a day going through Hooked on Phonics (following her lead) and she usually reads on her own for about 45 minutes a day already, so it's not going to be much different than what she is already used to. I am incredibly excited about teaching her! She is a kid that is much happier with planned, structured activities - she starts acting out if she doesn't have any organized things to do.

DD2 will be 2 next month and will do some of the FIAR projects with us: reading the book each day, any coloring/art projects, and many of the other non-bookwork activities. I'm going to work with her this year on increasing her attention span so she can sit to be read to for 10 minutes, teaching her colors, shapes, and ABCs and easy counting/sorting. Right now she mostly just wants to be on the move, though, and that's ok with me. =)

Math - Singapore 5 and MUS Delta for drill

Grammar - Abeka B (and some misc. things for dictionary skills, outlining, etc.)

Spelling - SWO G

Handwriting - Getty Dubay Italic F

Writing - WordSmith, etc. (maybe Writing Strands, I don't know yet)

History/Literature/Reading - Kingfisher and SOTW for ancients, along with living books

Science - How Nature Works/How the Body Works and other misc. things with living books

Logic - Mind Benders

Geography - BF study guide and map with Holling's books Paddle and Minn, then some others at the end of the year to fill in the few Eastern states those studies don't cover.

Latin - Latin Primer I (and maybe an outside class, too)

Spanish - Espanol Para Chicos y Grandes (and an outside class weekly)

I have some miscellaneous things to use for art and music appreciation. Not sure yet if we'll get any kind of outside class going for those subjects.

That's all I can think of right now!

Goals:

Dh and I need to have time to learn another language (job requirement), so we must combine the children as much as possible and also encourage independent learning.

Next year we'll have a 5th grader, 2nd grader, 1st grader, and 3 preschool aged children. In the subjects we're combining, we'll do some things as a group, then our oldest will have extra independent assignments.

For all:

Bible/Science: Character Sketches, Listen to the Animals, My Big Book of 5-Minute Devotions, Real Science 4 Kids Biology (both pre-level 1 and level 1), Animal Autobiographies (from Queen Homeschool), and a few other videos and living books on specific topics.

Social Studies: Homemade World Cultures/Geography course (using FIAR and HSS unit studies for determining which countries to cover).

Foreign Language: Continue to learn local language here (immersion method)

5th grader

Time 4 Learning for math and part of language arts

Classical Writing Aesop B - Narrations and writing projects

Copywork for Girls

Spelling through Copywork (finish current level, start next level)

2nd grader

Time 4 Learning for math and most of language arts

We are greatly reducing the textbooks around here! I think most of my dc have only two this year. Is that even possible? We'll find out, I guess.

dd12 (7th): Latina Christiana I, MUS Pre-algebra (at her request), Apologia General Science

dd10 (6th): Abeka Math 6, Observing God's World

dd 9 (4th): Abeka Math 4, A Reason for Handwriting

ds 7 (2nd): Abeka Math 2, A Reason for Handwriting

ds5 (K): Letters and Sound K, Numbers Skills K (both Abeka)

For history, church history, and read alouds we will be using Biblioplan-America and the World 1600-1850, and SOTW3 audio cd's. We are also picking up copywork, narration, and dictation which is brand new to us. The plan is also to use the artist and composer schedule from Ambleside.

Boy, writing it all out sure doesn't look like much. Or maybe it just looks much more simplified. In any case, this is out 8th year at this, and I'm finally seeing the benefit of "books" minus the "text" part that simply dries them out and kills the fun of learning. This is going to be a great year!
