  1. I have not posted on here for years now but needed to research something when I saw your post. My son thought it was well worth his time. We had him sit down last night and pestered him with all sorts of questions. While he thought the camp, kids and professors were great he said he could not imagine being out in the middle of nowhere. He also wants to go to a small university. Both my husband and myself went to Azusa Pacific in CA and while it was a small Christian university it was in the middle of everything. Besides Azusa I would love for him to go to Bioloa but shhh don't tell my husband that. He would think I am a traitor! LOL Glad to hear another good report about the worship camp. Cheri
  2. wow, I think it has been years since I have been on here. Anyway to answer your question... My son did vision therapy for 2 years and we did not see any improvement in his reading ability. (3rd and 4th grade). this was after we tried 3 years of different phonics programs. Only when we started an Orton Gillingham reading program did we see improvement. I am not saying vision therapy does not work, just not sure if it works for dyslexia. Cheri
  3. has anyone used the "Key to series" in combination with LOF? I would like to take a year and work through the "Key to series" because I like them so much but I am worried about leaving important stuff out. I know that it was designed to be used as a supplement, so what would I need to add to make it complete? Cheri
  4. Very pretty cat. My FIL and MIL have one and have to be so careful to never let it outside. They really love theirs, and it is pretty affectionate. Cheri
  5. and we tried all sorts of things before getting an oficial diagnosis. Can I suggest the two biggest helps for us? - oral repeated readings. We use McGuffey readers; they work well for this. -Barton reading and spelling - I watched a bunch of her free seminars that are on her website, they were helpful. I debated on the price of the program but we needed to do something(ds is 11). I have not been disappointed. Cheri
  6. I still tried to convince myself that it is cheaper than buying all those books. Now it is more like $ 5.00 here and there. Cheri
  7. I saw a guy wearing pirate clothes at the bank today... I was wondering if I should sneak out the back door when I saw him come in (wearing an eye patch and all.) I can't believe we missed it. That would have been fun! Cheri
  8. Nacho Libre "I look heedeous" Napolean- And we have Kip sessions regulary "Nonsense, poopy pants"- lots of Jim Carrey and the mockingbird song We are quite the intellectual group! Cheri
  9. We drive a big excursion so it is not like you can't see us.. A woman started turning right into us. At the the time I was saying, "what the heck is that laDy doing???" I honked and as I skimmed past her she was talking on the phone looking in the other direction. She didn't even know how close she came until we were swerving in front of her. As we came to the stop sign I rolled my window down and said," Maybe we should get off the cell phone!" My oldest son slumped down in his seat and said he wasn't going to ride with me anymore if I yelled things out the window at other people. I was just so amazed, she looked like someone needed to inform her:001_smile: Cheri
  10. is really great. Check out the online samples @ achild'sgeography We also like these for resources -Window on the World -How people Live(DK)-lots of great pictures -the Lands peoples and Cultures Series (check library) lots of great pictures as well HTH Cheri:)
  11. I do not do Bible and History first thing in the morning. Tried it -does not work here. First, my 3 year old twins go to preschool 2 mornings a week. big help. I save any type of reading outloud/ group work for when the little kids rest. My older boys do Bible memory work and read a devotion as one of their first assignments in the morning. But anything we would want to discuss must wait until nap time. I require a rest time after lunch for everybody. That way i get about 20-30 minutes of rest and it reeeeeally hlps me get through the day. The kids can either read, draw, or sleep during that time. After th30 minutes the little guys are usually asleep by then and we can all get to the school stuff again. HTH Cheri
  12. I have an almost 13, 11, and 10 year old using My Fathers World-Creation to Greeks. We do Bible and history together. Then I use the already laid out plan from MFW and give the boys a daily sheet of required work for them to complete on their own. It is easy because MFW schedules all subjects. I also have an almost 7 year old and 5 year old that I am teaching this year(plus 2 preschoolers) using little Hearts for God's Glory. It has really helped me to have the older boys do much more on their own this year. My 4th grader is really excited about getting to get his work done at a faster pace and not be waiting on me. This has evolved out of necessity...I tried doing it all together and it put me into a tailspin of despair by the end of the day. I took the next day to think about what I could do to make this whole thing work. All feels well now. Cheri
  13. is looking good to me. I have heard some people say he is a wacko...I am wondering what makes him seem wacky? I really like his view on so many things. :001_smile: Cheri
  14. Bolt was polite in his interview, I think the culture thing is worth pointing out. I was actually thinking of a couple of the American guys that were soooo rude after the qualifiers. Cheri
  15. those two are awesome??(May and Walsh) They were the highlight of my olympic viewing. So smiley and upbeat. Maybe I am biased since I was a college player and remember some of the girls from club days. Now lets talk about some of those track guys... talk about bad attitudes! UGH! Cheri
  16. For complaining we give extra jobs/work. Try and reward cheerful attitudes, make a big deal about how happy you are with a job/activity done with good attitudes. I find that some of my kids will even do other jobs voluntarily when I have done a good job praising them. I don't know why it is hard for me to remember praising them more often but with so much going on I get into a mode of Chop-chop. Also, it is hard to be the one that sets the tone in the home, but when I am in a grumbling sort of mood or having a bad attitude, it is amazing to see how it filters throughout every one else in the house. I am guilty of that more than I would have ever liked to admit. Usually DH has to point it out to me before I see it and I wonder why every one else was crabby all day!:001_huh::) Having them serve others is good way to help with complaining. Focusing on others helps us get our eyes off ourselves. We are making this a big part of our year this year, as we have some that would greatly benefit. (of course we all benefit from serving others but some are more inclined to do so on their own.;) just a few thoughts. HTH Cheri
  17. when I was separated from one of my kids. We were at the end of an aisle on the corner and we awere looking at stuff (5 kids) Everyone was with me just kinda looking at stuff. I just rounded the corner to continue looking at something. Really it was less than a minute but when my son looked up he didn't see me so he wandered straight up the aisle and started looking for me. I was about 5 feet from him the whole time. By the time I looked around the corner he was gone. anyway i looked up and down a few aisles and did not see him. When I told a store employee it was immediate lockdown. We found him a few minutes later and he said, "Where did you go mommy?" My question to him was, "Where did YOU go?' I was really embarassed. This child is so quiet and has a tendency to get involved at what he is looking at and get absorbed. scary -but now the little ones hang on to the cart if they are not riding in it. Cheri
  18. or I would be involved in education, it is so much fun and I just love learning. Cheri
  19. this fall. I guess the only thing one may not like about it is the book selections themselves. I am not overly excited about breezing through the beginning of history to present in 1 year. However, the layout is wonderful. It will help me to progress through the year, and know all things are being covered that I need to cover. If you like all the book selections, then I don't see that there is much to not like about the program. Cheri
  20. (which is an Orton Gillingham based program) and we are seeing some great results. It is easy to teach. I think it is expensive, but cheaper than going with a tutor. I have nothing negative to say about the program itself. We will be starting level 4 next week. Ds is 11. Cheri
  21. and passed. But I still do not know what to do. Is 7th grade math typically a review year or is pre- algebra usually the buffer for kids not ready to go into algebra? Which is the one most skip if you were to do one or the other?? Cheri
