  1. When teaching phonics using Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, what did your child use for early readers to practice skills they learned? Thanks for your suggestions.
  2. My dd is currently working through Saxon's Alg 2 (2nd Ed) and today she took test 11. On problem 6, she was asked to find the area of the figure and she couldn't arrive at an answer. Can someone who uses this edition as well kindly explain to me the procedure. When I work the problem, I get a different answer than the test key. I wish Saxon had a solutions manual for the tests too!
  3. The correct answer was 48 square root 3 - 70 But thank you for taking a stab at it too! :)
  4. Yes, the correct answer is 48 square root 3 - 70 I see exactly where my error occured as I neglected to distribute 4 square root 3 to BOTH terms in parenthesis. Duh! Thank you so much for your help.:)
  5. My dd and I have worked and reworked this problem numerous times and can't get the correct answer according to the solutions manual in Saxon Alg 2, 2nd Edition. Please help!!! It involves simplifying radicals so I will use the symbols ^/ to mean "square root". 3^/2(2^/2 - ^/6) . 4^/3 + 2 In case my symbols are confusing, I will try to type it out. 3 square roots of 2 (2 square roots of 2 - square root of 6) times 4 square roots of 3 + 2.
  6. My dd and I have worked and reworked this problem and can't seem to get the answer in the solutions manual. Can someone PLEASE help? It deals with simplifying radicals and I will use these symbols ^/ to mean square root. Ok, here is the problem: 3^/2(2^/2 - ^/6) . 4^/3 + 2 To interpret just in case the symbols are confusing: 3 square roots of 2 (2 square roots of 2 - square root of 6) times 4 square roots of 3 + 2
  7. Hello ladies, I posted this on the high school board but felt maybe I would get a response here more quickly. I have had some homeschoolers recently tell me that they count Saxon algebra I as 1 credit for algebra and 1/2 credit for geometry. Follow up the next year with Saxon's algebra II, and give 1 credit for algebra II and another 1/2 credit for geometry. Is there enough geometry integrated within both algebra texts to do so? The reason I'm asking is that my 9grader used MUS for algebra I last year. This year we began the new Saxon geometry text and she is really struggling with it. The algebra review that it has within contains stuff that was never covered in MUS and the stuff she has been introduced to, she has forgotten. My thoughts were to have her begin with the Saxon Alg. I book and work through this year and begin their Alg. II book next. I was thinking if I can count a geometry credit in there w/o her having to take a separate course then she wouldn't be behind. What are the thoughts on this?
  8. Ok, ladies...recently I have had a few homeschoolers state that they use Saxon Algebra I and count this as 1 credit for algebra I and 1/2 credit for geometry. The next year, use algebra II and count it as 1 credit for algebra II and give another 1/2 credit in geometry on a high school transcript. Is there enough geometry integrated within those algebra texts to do so? We used MUS for Algebra I last year and I decided to go w/ Saxon's new geometry this year. However, I'm finding that my 9th grader is really struggling with the algebra problems because Saxon geometry text contains some stuff that either MUS didn't cover in algebra or she has forgotten how to do them. My thoughts were to start her in Saxon's Algebra I book, work through it this year and move to Algebra II next year. If I can count the geometry w/o having a separate geometry course, she wouldn't be behind. Which brings me to my earlier question, is there honestly enough geometry contained in the Saxon algebra courses to even count it as a separate course? Thanks for your help and insight!
  9. We are having a difficult time controlling the flea beetles in our garden. They are quickly chewing the leaves our cabbage, broccoli, eggplant, and have made their way to the beans as well. Does anyone have any organic methods for controling these pests before they defoliate our entire garden??? Thanks!
  10. After a recommendation to check out Write at Home for outsourcing my dd's writing next year, I perused their website. If you have used Write at Home with your children, would you mind sharing your experience? I'm specifically looking at their 9th grade Composition 1 course for next year. I would love to obtain some feedback from others who have enrolled their child and find out your thoughts and opinions. Has anyone followed their high school sequence? Did it sufficiently prepare your child for the SAT essay? Is the workload manageable? Thank you for any information you are able to share with me.
  11. I'm looking for something that I can use for my 13yo in which someone other than myself will give writing assignments as well as evaluate them. We have used Writing Strands as well as other writing programs but I struggle with grading each and every assignment. Can anyone offer suggestions or advice for us? Thank you for your help!
  12. We switched from R&S to BJU this school year. My dd finished R&S 7th and is using BJU 8th grade this year. :001_smile:
  13. Is there a tried and true tip for draining grease from stew w/o letting it cool first and scraping it off after it has hardened? Please help as I'm a culinary-challenged gal.
  14. We currently use WS but I'm curious about IEW and what you think about this program - positives and negatives. It is quite costly and I would like to know some specifics about it. Can we jump in using Student Writing Intensive Level C without having ANY prior exposure to IEW? (My dd will be in 9th gr.) Also, can you share how you utilize IEW daily? How much time is required each day on your part and your child? Are there specific writing assignments each day or do you just implement what you learned into papers they write for other classes like history, literature, or science? Anyone disappointed with IEW? Thanks so much for your time and input.
  15. I agree the writing exercise is extremely frustrating forthat reason. I had the proficiency level set at 95%, but then went back in and lowered it a bit for the writing exercises.
  16. Beth, A homeschool friend told me that RS Level 1 is equivalent to two years of high school foreign language. I believe that I also read that info on RS website recently. Has anyone else heard differently regarding this? Yes, she does a separate grammar program as well. Dd is in 8th grade currently, but we will count RS for high school credit. I intend to continue grammar instruction in 9th grade as well. I'm probably not much help. Hopefully, someone will chime in who has BTDT.
  17. I'm trying to find *free* printable worksheets that would provide some extra practice to help solidify Algebra 1 concepts, specificially those that address slope-intercept formula, equation of a line, graphing perpendicular and parallel lines, and finding the slope-intercept formula with different givens. Nearly all of what I've come across have a subscription fee. Anyone know of a wonderful site that's free? Thanks! :001_smile:
  18. Would you mind sharing your favorite website for *free* printable worksheets to provide some extra practice with Algebra I concepts? Thank you so much!!:001_smile:
  19. LOL...my dd is the self-proclaimed fashion guru of the house and this is the SAME lesson that triggered her frustration - Blouse, shirt, coat, rain jacket, etc.
  20. Is it just me or do your kiddos find it frustrating at times to figure out the some of the vocabulary from the picture on CD lesson when there is no English translation for a few of the words in the study guide or the curriculum text? I do have a really old version of RS and maybe I just need to break down and buy the most recent version. Does this still occur in the newer version? I do not speak Spanish myself but find it odd that they would not provide an English translation for EVERY vocabulary word they introduce each week. Anyone else have a similar complaint? Also, if I were to upgrade, is the vocabulary the same or different?
