  1. Help! My 6th grader will have a comprehensive math exam following the completion of the last module of Math 2 in FL Virtual School. Up until now, we've used Saxon, but switched in January to this virtual option. Because he's never had anything but unit exams in Saxon, I am unsure how to help him study for the upcoming comprehensive exam. It's been a long time since I 'studied' like this! Any thoughts/tips/advice is greatly appreciated!
  2. I know two personally. And because I won't say it to their faces, I'll say it here: CUT YOUR HAIR! It looks dry and frizzy (friend one)/oily and stringy (friend 2.) And, it makes you look at least ten years older than you are. Of course these are just my opinions, not facts!
  3. We've just found out we'll be moving to the panhandle of FL (Walton County) in June. I need any information about homeschooling there, as well as co-ops and support groups.
  4. Thanks you guys! Now, I need to make a cake or cookies and try some of my 'own' vanilla!
  5. If you've made your own vanilla, is it as dark as store bought? I started some in July, and while it smells like vanilla, it's a much lighter shade than the store vanilla. Will it darken over time? And is it ok to use it as it? Thanks!
  6. Most of the people in attendence will know about it, but some probably won't, so they will be surprised right along with dh. I found an ecru linen dress with a lace overlay last year, marked down from $120 to $25. It's pretty but not too dressy, as this will be a casual affair. We had the whole shebang at our wedding - formal attire, service, reception. This time around, I want us to have fun and enjoy the experience.
  7. I'm not sure he would want to, but since he's the minister, he's used to being the center of attention. Also, since I've already got things in motion, it's too bad if'n he doesn't like it! LOL
  8. hey, you could start a new trend! And I think white would be my color of choice.
  9. Paper bag luminaries are beautiful, but I don't know how effective they would be as bug repellents. Have you tried the Off Clip Ons? They're pricey, but we used them at the ball field this year and they work very well.
  10. This July, dh and I will celebrate 18 years. I am planning a surprise wedding vow renewal during the 11 o'clock worship service and then having a church wide luncheon afterward! The minister who married us in 92 is coming to preach and do the renewal service that day. I am so excited! I've wanted to share this, but I can't do IRL, 'cause I really want it to be a total surprise, and there are too many loose lips around here!
  11. He believes in my teaching ability and supports the education decisions I make. He doesn't question any expenses I have when it comes to curriculum and extras. He publically supports homeschooling and his family.
  12. I wanted to add: I'm so glad to see so many 'homeschooling onlies'! It's encouraging to know we're not the only one!
  13. I've been homeschooling our only (ds10) since K4 - we'll begin 5th grade in August. Homeschooling has been rewarding for us and I can't imagine any other education option for him! It's not always easy; in fact sometimes it's trying, but it's always worth it!
  14. I've spent $700+ for next year on curriculum. The largest chunk of that was for My Father's World Creation to the Greeks curriculum we're trying next year. There's also piano lessons ($600) and extras, like museum memberships, sports fees, etc. I don't try to be a spendthrift, but I don't want to skimp either - we look on this expense as an investment in ds's education, just as if we were paying private school tuition - and it's far, far less than that.
  15. Here in AL we aren't required to keep anything, except attendance records; and our church school requires 2 progress report each year. I keep all that together in a 'homeschool' hanging file folder and just clip each year's records together and file them there. As far as work, I keep his math tests, history/science notebooks, and samples of all the rest - spelling tests, handwriting, language arts work etc. I store all these in plastic file boxes I ordered from Brylane Home. HTH
  16. I didn't go to the 10th (on my honeymoon) and after that, who cares? The only thing I had in common with most of those people was that we went to the same high school. Besides, looking at pics of the two that have been held, it's all the same people (you know, the "it" crowd back in the day) who seem to be holding on. I've reconnected through facebook with all those I wish to, so I wouldn't torture myself by having to endure a 'reunion'.
  17. At church. He was a newbie pastor and I visited the church one Sunday. A sweet older woman asked me if I was married when I came into the service. When I said no, she said I had to meet their new pastor, who was single too! I thought, NO THANKS. But, 2 months later we had our first date, and 14 months after that, we got married. That was 18 years ago this July! We listed Mrs Bertha in our wedding bulletin as our match maker!!
  18. I voted in the under 30 minute category, but I should have read on... it's more like 30 to 40 minutes total. If it's a roast or other long cooking meat, I'll put it on in the a.m. in the crockpot. The rest of the meal takes 20 minutes or so to complete. If I make it from scratch, I can usually be done in 40 minutes. We don't use a lot of prepared foods.
  19. After church, I'll be sitting out on the patio, under the umbrella, reading the paper or napping in the chaise lounge where my hubby and son will be grilling kabobs for my sister and myself. Very low key around here - as are most holidays for us.
  20. Currently reading: Pride and Prejudice The Well Trained Mind 3rd edition Lucia, Lucia (light fiction)
  21. You've got to be kidding. Your pet peeve is people who act responsible and don't spend money they don't want to spend?? Unbelievable!
