If you could go anywhere in the US for your anniversary where would it be?

Recommended Posts

I need help planning where to go. Our anniversary is the end of August and i do not want to travel out of the country. We did Vegas a couple years ago but I don't know if I want to go again this year. It IS the perfect destination for us because DH likes to play poker and I like to walk around and be warm. We ended up spending several hours each day/night doing our own thing which was really nice.

I just want to be somewhere warm. Ideas?

Savannah, Georgia (or Tybee Island)

New Orleans

Memphis, if you like bbq and music

New Mexico

We went to Vegas many years ago for our December anniversary. I know you mentioned August, but wanted to mention that it is beautiful at Christmas time if you end up traveling/celebrating later.

You could try the casinos in CT.

I like cities. NYC or Philadelphia are my favorites.

Me too. I like walking around for hours just people watching

The problem with Vegas is I just hate all the young trashy groups. I mean, I never had any trouble there, it's just kinda not my style. I have never been to NYC but I did think of that. Hmmmm, that's kind of growing on me.

I thought about a cruise but I don't know how to pick a good one

I'd go to southern California, or Lake Tahoe (not as warm, but gorgeous). There's also gambling in Lake Tahoe (on the Nevada side).

Arizona's beautiful, and we do have casinos here on the reservations.

Wendi

Oh Arizona? I never thought of that. I just want to go somewhere that we both can do what we like. I like walking around/sight seeing and he loves to play poker. We both love having several hours per day to do what we want on our own and then have dinner/hang out the rest of the time. Any suggestions of where in AZ?

I would TOTALLY go to Tahoe or wine country. Or San Francisco. Love California!

I'm SO afraid to go to California. DH used to live in Pleasanton for 2 years and I am afraid if I go, I will send someone back for the kids and never return

oooh what about Alaska? I would love to see it (in the summertime of course :D )

I've never been there, but I'm guessing it should be warm still in August, no?

You definitely don't want to come to Florida though I can tell you that.. August and September here are the two worst months of the whole year!

oooh, AZ is the place to be :D Sedona is breath taking. There is a casino near Montezuma's Castle.. It would be a great location to venture off sight seeing...

The islands of South Carolina are awesome...it will be hot! Isle of Palms, Kiawah, Sullivan's Island, Fripp...etc. They are lazy beach towns, lots of history plus Charleston is a quick drive away with tons to do!

We've been to the Seattle area twice for our anniversary in July...the weather was perfect...we stayed at a little cottage in Olympia right on Puget Sound and took the ferry over to Victoria, B.C. I highly recommend it!

Bed and Breakfast in the Black Hills of SD. My husband and I have done this a couple of time for just one or two days and I love it. It is such a beautiful place, can stay at room and read or go sight seeing but no big time stress. Did I say I love it? It has been about 10 yrs since we last went and really doubt that we will be going again but.......OH.......

There are a lot of places that I thought of but we would have to travel quite a ways to get there and travel is NOT something I enjoy. :tongue_smilie:

I don't live in the US, but I thoroughly enjoy going down to Tucson AZ every couple of years. My best friend likes to head to Palm Springs CA. I think I'll do something different next time though and go up to Alaska.

Snorkeling in the Keys

Kayaking in Maine

Hiking in the Olympic National Park

Hiking/camping/fishing in Alaska

Rim to Rim the Grand Canyon

I just have to say about the bolded that August and September are the height of hurricane season when the storms are most active. The Keys are a mandatory evacuation zone in the event of a hurricane. You really don't want to come to Florida during those months if you can help it. Even if there wasn't a hurricane it's in the mid 90's everyday with really high humidity and it rains every day in the afternoons. No fun. :(

I really like the rest of the ideas on Kayaking Mom's list though. They sound fantastic. :)

wherever dh happened to be at the time..... (he travels. a lot.)

maybe its because he does travel a lot, which allows us each plenty of time to do the things we enjoy on our own.

for our anniversaries, we like to do something together. so we choose locations where the things we like to do together are.

mostly, that involves camping in california, because we like to walk, talk, cook, be outside, read, play bridge, sing....

so yosemite, tuolomne, mono lake, tahoe.....

we love the big island of hawaii, where we rent a house when we go.... its cheaper than hotels, and one of the things we love to do is cook together.

not sure that helps. what things do you like to do together? maybe you could start with places that offer the best of your "together" choices, and then narrow them down by factoring in the being warm and playing poker parts?

good luck!

The one summer my dh and I were working there, it didn't get warm enough to wear shorts (unless you were a native) The next year they had days in the 80's. This was in Anchorage. It is beautiful, but the weather varies a lot.

wow! I had no idea that it would still be that cool even in the summer. I would love to see Alaska. I saw some pictures of it in a National Geographic magazine in the mid 80's and I am still haunted by those images. It was so beautiful.

If it was just DH and me, I'd head for the Outer Banks of North Carolina, specifically Ocracoke Island, which is where we spent our honeymoon. Beaches, romantic setting, and delicious seafood. We've spent a few anniversaries there. :)

(Of course, if we took a family vacation anywhere, we'd probably go there too.)

We spent one anniversary hiking in the mountains of New Hampshire, with a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant, and that was fun too. In the summer, it's pleasantly warm. Spent our tenth anniversary exploring the Wellsboro area of northern PA, which is really pretty. Wellsboro is a very cute little town.
