LNC
My hubbie and are just wondering. :001_smile: Mirriam-Webster says the first way is correct. Something else I've been pronouncing wrong for 40 years! http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lawyer Edited February 26, 2009 by LNC
Jean in Newcastle
law- yer Edited to say: I thought I was saying it "law-yer" but when I listened to their examples, I guess I say "loy- yer"! Mamasteff
It always drove me crazy that dh said "law-yer." Because I am always right. Except, apparently, in this instance. (SHHH. Don't tell. I will never hear the end of it!)
Janet in Toronto
I say "loy-yer" but it may be a Canadian thing...When we lived in Atlanta, I typically heard "law-yer" Edited February 26, 2009 by Janet in Toronto fixed a typo
Laura R (FL)
maybe it's southern because we all say law-yer.
rainforest mama
I think loy-yer must be the Canadian pronunciation. That's how I say it. Lana.
Janet in Toronto
Mirriam-Webster says the first way is correct. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lawyer Actually, it has both pronunciations listed. "Loy-yer" is the second one.
cindyinTexas
I am sure I do not count. I live in south Texas and there are a lot of words that I say differently. The word 'jeet' is actually a phrase meaning 'Did you eat?'.:)
C_l_e_0..Q_c
Well, I pronounce it "liar" Honestly, it's one of those English words for which my French accent really shows. it always comes out as "liar"
ssexton
Well, a long time ago, I went to law school in the south. For what it's worth (practically nothing, LOL!) I say loy-yer. :)
SapphireStitch
I say loy-yer. I live in the South but am originally from the Midwest.

Spy Car
Actually, it has both pronunciations listed. "Loy-yer" is the second one. Funny, to me the first sound file sounds like they are saying "liar". The second is the way I'm used to hearing the word pronounced: loy-yer. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lawyer Bill
cougarmom4
I say attorney. :001_smile: My dh is one...and for some reason it just sounds better. Maybe because most of the lawyer jokes are about lawyers and not attorneys. But I do say loy-yer rather than law-yer.
Jenny in Atl
I also say loy-yer... Been in the south for 25 years but my folks are from LA and I was born in NYC (lived there till I was 13). So who the heck knows!
fivetails
I don't say loy-yer. I say loy-er. One y sound. :D Pennsylvania accent. That's exactly how I say it.. loy-er ...no second Y sound. :) ....I've never heard anyone say it with the actual "law" sound...
Mom22ns
Ooh, I have to vote for loy-yer. I have always made fun of my dh who is the only one I know who says law-yer. He was raised on a farm and I always thought that was just part of his rural twang. Debbie
elegantlion
Midwest raised, now in the south, I saw loy-yer.

mommylawyer
As one, I prefer to be called a "law-yer." However, when asked what their parents do, my younger children mispronounce and say, "Mommy and Daddy are liars." Nice.
Tree House Academy
I am from TN and I say "loy-yer." I think that is just the way it comes out when I talk. I don't think it is the southern accent, because most people I know say, "laaaaawwww Yur" LOL
PinkInTheBlue
From the south and definitely say law-yer here

Katiebug_1976
I grew up in WA (6 miles south of Canada) and we say it loy-yer, but when I met my husband and was introduced to Oklahoma, I realized it's a whole different language down here! In OK it is pronounced law-yer. So I will agree, it must be a north/south thing!

Suzanne in ABQ
It's Loy-er 'round these parts (New Mexico) I've never heard anyone say law-yer, I don't think.
Matryoshka
Loy-er. I'm from New England, but I don't have a regional accent - well at least not the "r" thing. I took some online test once where it mostly concentrated on vowels, (like, do mary, merry and marry sound alike or different to you?) and it pegged me. Liz CA
Well, I pronounce it "liar" Honestly, it's one of those English words for which my French accent really shows. it always comes out as "liar" This made me laugh - perhaps that is how we should pronounce it. I apologize to all the fine Law-yers with integrity on this board.
