  1. Some homesteader friends of ours who nixed the fridge had a spring running down the hill behind their house, so they put a pipe in the ground to catch it, routed it into a large dishpan-like container with a roof over it to keep the sun off, and put a hole in the pan opposite the pipe entry so the container always had 40-degree spring water flowing in and out, but the pan was always 3/4 full. They stored food in there for a day or two, like the goat's milk from their goats & other things. It was a great set-up! They attached a net bag with soap on it near the hole where the water came out so they always had running water in which to wash their hands. Mary
  2. There is also another bladder condition that can cause this. You need to have the cat evaluated at the vet's office. My cat has this condition and takes powdered supplements on her cat food. It helps a lot and she has flare-ups only once in a great while now. Please take your cat to the vet! Mary
  3. Hooray! For each of our kids, when they read their first full sentence, we took them to Dairy Queen. It was such a happy day for all!
  4. Oh, how awful! I am so sorry for you and your family. I will pray that the Lord will comfort all of you.
  5. I'd like to add that twice a year, we take several days to clean out and clean up. The best thing I ever did was to make things *easier to put away than to get them out.* Organize, but don't create too-complicate systems or no one will use them. I hate staying up later than I should to clean up, so I am training myself and my children to be better at putting something down *once* (in the right place) instead of having to put it down *twice* (once in the wrong place, then in the right place.) I mean, who wants more work? I think we create much work just by being lazy. In my house, anyway.
  6. I use a bowl and I put some plastic on it, but leave an opening. This keeps moisture in, but not enough to make the seeds rot before they sprout. The plastic also keeps dust and other things out of it. I keep it on the counter by the sink, so I want it covered. I don't have any other place to put it--very little counter space in my kitchen. Not that I'm complaining. :glare:
  7. Oh, and don't forget that you are looking for *inches lost*, not numbers on the scale coming down. When you are gaining muscle and losing fat, you cannot get an accurate view of things unless you just go by your waist size and how your clothes fit.
  8. Are you getting enough to eat? Eating too little will make your metabolism crawl. I have heard it recommended that once per week, eat a high calorie meal to keep your metabolism from thinking you are starving. In any case, can you step up the exercise? I have found that using the circuit style of exercise has been the most effective for me. You can make anything into circuit style. For example, if you are on a walk, walk normally for 5 minutes, then walk as fast as you can for 3, then back to normal for 3-5, and back and forth. You get so much more benefit from the same amount of time. HTH
  9. Just be careful about having the kids pick out a name. My youngest decided to call our school The S_______ Monkey school. :001_huh: LOL (Insert our last name in the blank, of course.)
  10. Can you advise me on the going rate for tutors in your area? I want to tutor to help the finances since dh's job is so uncertain--he works for a newspaper. I cannot seem to find any ads for anyone else here, so I can't figure out how much to charge per hour. Thanks so much for your help!
  11. No, it isn't. See, I have always heard and believe that the hardest is having 2 because usually, the firstborn one is not old enough to be of any real help with the second yet. But if you are training your children from the start, then by the time you have 3 or 4 (or more), the olders are able to be a real help to you. I have found this to be true. I have 4 children. They are about 2 years apart. Your friend should be encouraging you and building you up, not filling you with fear and discouragement.
  12. Ugh, no. LOL I think the only graduation should be after 12th grade. That is all we will go here, if they even want to do anything. My first-born does not even want a party. He feels that you just go from one thing to the next, and what is the big deal? LOL
  13. My dh and I did get lots of loans and because of it, we were in a hole from the start. It is goofy, imho, to be buried in debt at the time when you are *least* able to make much money. Our eldest is 18 and we have *no* money for college because we struggled all our marriage to pay those rotten loans. If only I'd known. It paralyzed us. Neither of us went into high-paying careers--I stayed home with the kids soon after having baby #1 a year after graduation and dh went into print journalism. Our kids know the struggle since they have lived it with us and they have no desire to repeat it, so the ones who will go to college will go locally and live at home and will try to CLEP out if as much as possible. They will work part time and will work during the summers and will apply for every scholarship known to man. Loans are out. If they need loans, then they don't need to go to college yet. I really could not care less about the "college experience." There are other ways to grow up. Many people do it without going through that. I learned a lot, but also have the most regrets from that time in my life. I realize it is different for everyone. I just want you to know what my experience has been.
  14. Thank you so much. My dh was told yesterday that he and all of the other salaried workers will be getting a 6% pay cut. We were already struggling. Ugh. I guess this is where I begin selling everything that is not nailed down. LOL My biggest fear dh losing his job and losing the house. I need to look to Jesus, whose provision is not dependent on dh's job at the newspaper being secure. I'll be using this list to pray for others, too. Thanks! Mary
  15. Right, but I think all this thread is is a way to vent and even to ask questions. No one is pointing out anything personally. I have learned a few things on here that I think will be useful to me. Also, speaking well (and correctly) *is* important. Just see who they pick for a job. It is likely the well-spoken one. First impressions are very important in many ways.
  16. Ohh, I see. It would be weird for me to say "Dawn" that way. LOL That site explained a lot. Thanks for posting it. I love the topic of linguistics. Thanks for posting the link.
  17. And to top it all off, here is a funny story about people from different regions of the US. I went camping on a 4-H trip w/ my kids. There were several other 4-H families that we did not know. Early in the morning, a woman came out of her tent and we started chatting, getting to know each other. She said that Dawn was still sleeping. Dawn liked to fish. Dawn this and Dawn that. 30 minutes later, Dawn came out of the tent. He was very large, hairy and had a pot belly! I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. I thought Dawn was her daughter. But no, "DON" was her husband! I know this is all off topic from the original thread, sorry.:D:D I wonder, too, how phonics is taught under those circumstances. Really, just curious, not criticizing. I tried to ask that of a lady who said, "acktopus" instead of "octopus" and she was quite confused at my question. LOL Now, I would like to know how you pronounce "Dawn" differently than "Don." Where I come from, they are the same, so if I am wrong, please help me with that. When I was a kid, my pastor made fun of me for that thing exactly and I never did get it. LOL I pronounce them both "Don."

  19. To use baking soda, you can either mix a tablespoon into the shampoo in your palm before applying it to your hair or you can put a tablespoon or two in the bottom of a cup, add warm water from the shower, stir with your fingers, then work it into your hair, pouring it on a little at a time. Massage in, rinse well, then shampoo. I use baking soda instead of shampoo and it works very well. One of my sons does this, too. It does not work well by itself if you have oily hair, though. Mary
  20. It does sound regional, doesn't it? I've not heard it before, yet most people here seem to say it. Knowing that actually makes it easier to take because I know they are not just being lazy. LOL
  21. That is exactly what is happening with my daughters. They are 14 and 11 now, but a year ago, the 11yo cried because she felt that big sister was growing up leaving her behind when dd14 wanted to do something alone, but I explained how it works. I told her that while big sister loves her and still spends time with her, she is growing up and wants to do some things alone or with other friends, and that it is OK. I explained that when dd11 started through that "growing-up time," they would be closer again. Now that dd11 is starting into puberty, they are closer again. It is funny how it works. I did not force anything, but I make sure that dd14 knows how her sister feels and I remind her to give attention to her younger sister, making sure she is assured of not having been forgotten. It is lovely to see dd14 acting motherly to dd11. It is one of the joys of home schooling and seeing the kids enjoy each others' company. Mary
