  • Biography
After 40+ years as a Florida girl, I moved (with my ever tolerant husband & kids)to a tiny NC town.
  • Location
    north-western North Carolina
  • Interests
I read, bake, and teach my kids. Oh, and spend time with my sweet husband.
  • Occupation
Teaching my eleven year old son and eight yr old daughter .
  1. I'm so sorry to hear this! Please pass along our wishes for comfort and peace for Kay and her family.
  2. We use it with a small co-op and are in Yr 3 this year. I have an UG and a Dialectic level student. It works well for us.:)
  3. I still read aloud to my 9 yr old dd and 13 yr old ds. We all look forward to it, and I expect we'll keep it up.
  4. Chance or Purpose: Creation, Evolution, and a Rational Faith, by Cardinal Schoenborn, is one that's on my wish list on the subject of evolution/creation. We are Episcopalians and are fine with God using evolution as a "mechanism" for creating life, but many of our homeschooling friends are YE creationists and I read about the issue so that I feel prepared to talk about it with my kids when questions come up!
  5. We've enjoyed the poetry the most. I love the way the poetry book pages are formatted to make it easy to focus on the sound and rhythm of words.
  6. Nutella and peanut butter, by the spoonful. Nutella on Nilla wafers. I had Nutella on sliced bananas yesterday and also found it quite inspiring!
  7. I love our co-op! It is very small (currently 5 families) and academically focused. The kids enjoy getting together in a class setting once a week, and the things we do -- book and history discussions, poetry & Latin recitations, Shakespeare, craft projects, etc. -- seem more fun with a group. All the moms get to teach in areas where they feel most qualified, and for me, at least, it is pleasantly motivating to know I am preparing a lesson for a class rather than "just" my own students. We've had several families try our group for a while and leave because we weren't a good "fit," and when we were new to this area we first joined another co-op which wasn't a good fit for us, so I know that finding the Right group can be hard! For our family the co-op has been a blessing, but I think we were very lucky to find a group that nearly exactly meets our needs.
  8. Simply Christian, by N.T. Wright or maybe The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism, by Timothy Keller. And if she is interested in the science/faith issue, perhaps God and Stephen Hawking: Whose Design is It Anyway, by John Lennox or The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, by Francis Collins.
  9. Don't be so self-conscious! Mostly people Aren't watching you to see what idiot thing you'll do next or thinking about how stupid you look with your big nose and your geeky clothes. And the ones who Are watching and thinking those things aren't worth stressing about anyway! Keep reading and dreaming, enjoy all the nice people (and Most people really Are nice, once you get to know them), and be happy!
  10. Ah! Thank you. That would explain why I didn't find it in "groups." Not a big deal, anyway. I don't know if I'll stick to it, but having to enter food in a food log is a good way for me to limit my snacking!
  11. I just went and visited the site. I think I might join -- it's free, right?
  12. We use the one I got for high school graduation in 1983, and it's never failed me. When I'm typing on the computer, though, I do use online dictionaries, and I Love the dictionaries on my Kindle!
