  1. DD 14 Horace: Odes (she loves Horace) My Story by Elizabeth Smart Favorite Poems Old and New, Helen Ferris, ed.
  2. My DD is taking Latin 1 with Lukeion right now and we are very impressed with them. The class is very rigorous and my daughter is enjoying the class and learning so much. We are secular and although I'm sure the Lukeion instructors are Christian, they seem to keep religion out of their classes. HTH :-)
  3. I just wanted to let you know that Heritage Resources carries many of the books mentioned by cbollin. Here's the link: http://www.heritageresources.ca/cat_list.asp?id=233
  4. We love Lukeion Latin. DD 14 is taking her first outsourced course with them and she has already learned so much about scheduling her time, studying and perservering, as well as the Latin of course.
  5. Yes, if they make a mistake they have to correct it. They do this for all subjects, except for tests, and for those I make sure to point out what they did wrong.
  6. About 4000, and I purge them regularly. I don't have many clothes, and my furniture is very minimal, but I've got to have my books.
  7. Does it have to be physics? Could he take another science that isn't so mathy, like Geology or Environmental Science?
  8. I definitely would have worked on DD's handwriting more. What horrible chicken scratching. Thankfully she can type, so at least that's a saving grace. We have been HSing 7 years now. Looking back, I don't think I would have changed too much. WTM was published the year DD was born, so there weren't all the classical materials that are available now. I'm looking forward to using WWE from the start with my younger ones, as well as R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey. I'm just glad to have the chance to do this two more times. :) Hopefully, by the time I'm done with my kids I'll be able to start teaching the grandkids. ;)
  9. DD12 won the local science fair on Saturday. She won the gold medal for the Grade 6/Grade 7 age group AND the Best of Fair trophy. This is the first Science Fair for her, so we are all thrilled, and it sure made my February.
  10. Me! I was due 2 days ago, so I guess we already scratched that itch. This is our first boy, and we're very excited to meet him! _______________________________ Lana, Mom to DD11 & DD3
  11. Here's another plug for Lively Latin. We started with Minimus, which DD enjoyed, but didn't learn that much. We have been very happy with Lively Latin. DD loves it and begs to do Latin - it is one of her favorite subjects. I think she's learned a lot too. Hopefully LL 2 will be complete soon, as we will probably need it this fall. Lana
  12. I went with the hard copy. It includes the CD as well if you need to print another copy. I didn't want to have to print all the time. As a PP said, it is easy to just grab the book and go teach. BTW, my DD loves it. Lana
  13. Well, this year I'm due to have a baby boy on Father's Day. So I guess that will be his big present, LOL :). Our girls will of course make him cards too. Lana
  14. Um, whatever DH is making at any given time? Sorry, I'm no help. DH has made lots and then not so much in the past, and it always seems to be enough for us. As long as I've got money for HS books and food, we're fine. ;) Lana
  15. Can't wait to hear! Tell us the news! I'm getting ready to have a little guy any day now, so this is a great thread. Lana
  16. My oldest DD is 11 and I am planning for her to take her first two years of her degree through an on-line university at 16, then transferring to university for her final two years when she is 18. The local Community College is not very rigorous, and I would rather not have DD pick up bad habits there. I have taken courses through the on-line university (as well as brick and mortar universities), and the courses are excellent, fully transferable, and accredited. Hopefully, by the time DD is ready for the brick and mortar university, we will be closer to one. Right now, though, this seems like the best option for us. I am confident that DD will be ready for university at 16, as she is quite advanced academically and is a lovely, mature young lady. Lana
  17. WTM of course! Also, Complete Homeschool Resource Book by Rebecca Rupp, although it is getting a little dated.
  18. :iagree: That's how I look at it too. DH is extremely supportive of our efforts and funds all items without question. He knows I've done all the research and planning and he doesn't have to. That's how it is with pretty much everything in our marriage. I handle the details and he makes it possible through his hard work and support. It seems to work pretty well for us - we're celebrating our 20th anniversary, and having another baby this summer. Lana
  19. DH is a dual U.S./Canadian citizen. His parents and siblings are Canadian, but he was born in California when his parents were working there in the 60's. Our eldest DD11 was born in Canada and 6 months later we moved to the U.S. Because DH hadn't lived in the U.S. for 5 years as an adult, DD was considered only a Canadian, so she and I both had to get green cards. Her little baby picture on her green card was so cute! We lived in the U.S. for 6 1/2 years before returning to Canada in 2005. DD11 and I surrendered our green cards at the border and are now just Canadian citizens. Strangely enough though, our DD3 and the new baby due in June will be eligible to be dual US/Canadian citizens, although both were born in Canada. We just have to go to the consulate and show proof that DH lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years as an adult. Whenever we travelled out of the U.S. we always travelled on DH's U.S. passport. DD and I had only Canadian passports, but they were usually just given a cursory glance, along with our green cards. We were never hassled. We continue to file a tax return in the U.S., in case we decide to return one day. If you make less than about $90,000 (the amount changes every year) the income tax process is very simple. You also get an automatic 2 month extension to file if you're living outside of the U.S.
  20. I live on the northwest coast of British Columbia, where it rains all the time. I used to be Lana in Pa, and Lana in MN, among other names. We just keep moving!
  21. Thank you Jen! That's exactly what is wrong. DD loves to read and this is so much outlining, map work, etc., but few books. The History Pockets were not a hit. I'll try throwing a few more books at her next year. Lana
  22. I could have written this. DD11 is doing HO Level 2 Ancients right now and it is like pulling teeth. She has always been a history lover, but this particular program is killing her love for it. I don't want to reinvent the wheel either, so I'd love to hear what others have to say as well. Lana
  23. :iagree: This has worked well with DD11. It is one of the subjects that gets done all the time. It is quick and easy and DD loves it. Even our DD3 loves to chant along with her big sister. Lana
  24. Hits: Lively Latin Singapore PM 4A/4B JAG Getting the Job Done: Outlining - Remedia Press Key to Fractions Canada Map Book 3 Misses: SWO - finally gave up on this after Level E - DD wasn't learning anything from it. I now have Spell to Write and Read and like the look of it. CW Aesop B - I think DD was too advanced for this. We're going to try Homer A next, once I can wrap my preggie brain around it. History Odyssey Ancients Level II - it just isn't getting done and I think it is sucking the joy of history out of my DD. Drawing With Children - I have tried to implement this since DD was about 6 (she's now 11). Once again, no luck. I think I need something more open and go. Lana
