I am always having ideas of what I want to do...some fleeting thoughts (Wouldn't it be fun if...?) And some I attempt to do but stop doing for various reasons.

So I brainstormed all those things and came up with 52. So the plan would be I'd do each thing the list per week. Yes, all 52. I figure, aim big! Fail big! I aim small and fail small all the time.

So maybe that's my problem...small thinking.

LOL

Wow!

Mine are rather more pedestrian:

Last year: floss regularly.  I did OK.

This year: once a week, call a friend or relative who lives in another state or country.  *Any* friend or relative -- just going for contact generally -- I'm not as good as I want to be in actually staying in touch with people I care about in my head.  (IRL in touch, not social media.)

I’d be someone who would also want to jump in whole hog.  I’d have to create a schedule for myself to get it all done and assign myself 7 or 8 of those things to do each day.  If I didn’t assign myself a daily schedule, I’d fall off the wagon pretty soon.

I think that is awesome Pam!

Like I said, some of mine I've started over the years. Shelby Foote I bought in 2011 and set a goal to finish by the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War...I think I read 100 pages.

the *have a drink at every bar in my town*...I said that to DH one day as we drove past a bar about 3/4 mile fro m our house that we'd never been in. He said he'd be my DD. I was like...I'm not going to do it all in one night! LOL! I still haven't been to that particular bar.

Swiff & Polish Hour: I kinda do weekly. Ish.

Whatever happens...I had fun making the list!

Yes! I'll probably spend more time making the daily lists than actually doing the tasks. LOL

Just now, Margaret in CO said:

To help with #27, look for a book called Naming Nature!

Thank you!

That is another *riding in car with DH* inspired goal. I was saying, "See that bird?! I don't know what that bird is! I only know birds with feathers with primary colors. So like what, a robin...cardinal...bluebird--"

Him: "bluebird or blue jay?"

Me: "I don't know! That's my point! And trees! I know maples. Pines. Willow. Poplar. I think I know poplar. Are they tall? They're tall and narrow, right? I'm surrounded by trees and birds and stuff and I don't know what a lot of them are. Burning bush. Forsythia. I guess it has to be eye-catching for me to know what it is."

Him: "Where are we going again?"

Full Focus Planner by Michael Hyatt - The #1 Daily Planner to Set Annual Goals, Increase Focus, Eliminate Overwhelm, and Achieve Your Biggest Goals - Appointment & Agenda Organizer - Hardcover

I was looking at this last night, trying to decide if such a thing would GUILT TRIP me or make me radically more productive.

I will note that if the op drops goals 8 and 9 (baked goods, which I would eat almost in entirety all by myself), then she won't need goals 23, 41, and 42. Or maybe definitely do the exercise goals? Haha, I don't know. I try not to make desserts because I EAT them, lol.

And you know, this whole thing opens up really important philosophical questions, like would being more productive make you HAPPIER? I'm really not sure. I mean, I'm pretty happy being less productive. If I stress and rush myself a bit and fill out that focus journal and set goals and get more done, will I be happier?

Wow. That’s quite a list. Other than the better posture thing (which really is something I’m working on,) I’m setting the bar pretty low.

I know I need more exercise and to work on stress reduction techniques, but I get tired and stressed just thinking about those things.

If you tell me where you live, I would seriously consider coming over and helping you eat the bundt cakes, regular cakes, desserts, cookies, and bars. That could be one of my resolutions. Eat more baked goods. I like that one.

For birds, I second the Sibleys.  For trees, I love this Fandex -- it has the shape of the leaf on top, the texture of the bark along the long end, and on the back a photo of the full-grown shape and information about habitat / pictures of cones where appropriate etc. Can leave in the car, pop into a backpack for a short hike, etc.  With the bark you can even identify trees in the winter when the leaves are gone.

Good thoughts.

I actually have a 5x7 3-ring binder, with paper, dividers, and folders that I bought in the fall. It Is just what I wanted bc I have dozens of pieces of 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 pieces of paper (it is recycled paper is I tear into that size). But some of them I want to keep (notes, recipes, ideas) but I had no way to organize these litt!e scraps. I was so happy when I saw the binder! I got DS one for a hobby that he's turning into a side gig.

I will.probably send half or more of the baked goods to work with DH. Unless Cat figures out where I live.

I might be happier. Many days my life involves not being able to leave the house or get too involved in anything that requires intense concentration. So a lot of times I don't even want to start something bc I am worried I'll get pulled away. Getting pulled away is fine...But it is the days I'm not pulled away that I seem to fritter away, and that makes me UNhappy.

Wow, I don't even make one resolution because I know that I can't keep it 😂

That's interesting bc I feel the same way. One resolution is easy for me to procrastinate. It feels like I have all the time in the world for one resolution! Hours and days and weeks and months...I'd put it off, (or half@ss it) bc I know I've got tons of time to get to it.

I did that for 2 summers in a row with a walk I want to take. It is an amazing place but too treacherous to do in bad weather. I've done part of it often but never did the whole thing. And after I'd do part, I'd tell myself I'd go back to do the whole thing. But since I had "the rest of summer" or maybe into Oct, depending on the weather, I 'd think I had plenty of time.

I still.haven't done it! Ugh.

This is another impetus for #27.

It is a red-tailed hawk, right? I had to do some research and I am disappointed in myself that I just didn't know what this gorgeous bird was!

This was taken in the city but right near a little creek where I've also seen 3 foxes in the early dawn (I knew what they were, haha). So it is kind of an amazing place. I haven't seen the foxes since summer but I'd seem them at 5 am, when it was getting light. I think they are still there but it's just too dark to see them that early.

I LOVE when people set big goals -- I think it's cool. (I want to suggest this book on habits. It really changed how I approached new goals: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. I'm reading it again today. So good. The other book that I've heard awesome things about on a podcast: Atomic Habits by James Clear.)

I have a dear friend who was let go at her job and is now job hunting.

She's smart, funny, personable, super kind and so forth -- and keeps shooting for "meh" jobs. I keep saying, "shoot a little higher."

Unfortunately her current boss has picked away at her self-esteem.

Keep us in the loop!! And good luck!

Wow, this is fun! My "aim big" is making my quilty UFO list (UnFinished Objects).....and then planning to finish them. Ha! Well, just finishing the actually "already started but not yet done" projects would be doable....it's that I put down all the "ideas in my head that I haven't even started and maybe haven't even bought fabric for yet" projects and think somehow I'll get to those, too.....BUT, if at the end of the year I've made *progress* then that's a win for me.

So, this year's list (although, put me in that "Better Posture" group, too, please....)

UFOs

quilt tops that just need quilting:  Starfecta, Bending Star, Fat Quarter Log Cabins, Sister's Storm at Sea quilt, Tumbling Blocks quilt

quilts that are started but not finished:  Niece's quilt (pieces cut; no blocks made); placemats (made, quilted, waiting on binding); ABC Mystery Quilt (some blocks, some not); on-going Round Robin project(s) throughout the year

quilts that are still just ideas (some with fabric already, some just patterns, some not either): Son's Graduation Quilt; T-shirt Quilt from (late) Uncle's T-Shirts; "Dear Stan" Marvel tribute quilt (to enter into a contest, due in April.....); Peacock quilt; Gypsy Wife quilt; my take on Gravity quilt; seasonal...something...to put out front, for each season; butterfly quilt for friend's grandbaby; possibly more I'm forgetting.....

Plus charity quilts I'd like to make (some of the quilt tops to be quilted will actually be donated to charities like Linus Project, etc.). I'd really really really love to get to a place where I make/donate one charity quilt each month, or at least each time i finish one of my "to keep" projects

We won't discuss the other things I should also be doing......like how I also really need to actually implement the simple to follow, bite-sized chunks keep the house clean plan that's been posted on my fridge for 2 years now......nor the things I want to add to my list after reading all of y'all's (I'd also love to be able to identify birds beyond "well, it's either a hawk or a falcon or something along those lines...."); the Quilty Dreams is a good place to start, for me.

I’ve decided that during this next week I need to:

make 3 costume pieces

choreograph 3 dances

make roman blinds

dismantle Christmas

install coat hooks and reorganize the shoe area of the entry

fix a window leak

yeah, this isn’t possible but in my mind I have the TIME to do it now. 🙄

Could I add, learn to like (or at least tolerate) a cup of coffee?  Is that a reasonable goal for 2019?

I guess - but why? Life's too short to drink beverages you don't like and it's not really good for us so why bother? I mean if you said learn to like steamed broccoli or brussels sprouts then I could sort of understand it. But coffee, nah

Get the free Merlin bird app. It's amazing. You can identify birds by putting in your location, colors, sounds, or just about anything to identify and it will give you pictures of birds you might see in your area.  http://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/?utm_source=Cornell+Lab+eNews&utm_campaign=92791579dc-ebird+enews+jan+2019&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_47588b5758-92791579dc-303111513

These things have been in my thoughts for the last couple of weeks. They're why my goals are tied to the things that are currently making me miserable, lol.

This is very smart! Would you like to share them? I mean, what a way to make New Year's resolutions (which I never do, hehe). That actually seems really good to make a list of what you're unhappy about and resolve to make CHANGE about it. I like that! Much better than just resolving to do things you feel guilty about not getting done.

Your list is very ambitious.

It did get me thinking though.....maybe I could make up a list if 52 items similar to yours and then just pick one a week to do.  That would be more doable for me.

Did you just say her list would be valuable if each thing only got done ONCE instead of 52 times? I love this, lol. But you're right. What a hoot. I think it must be the thyroid medicine in me, making me thing this setting goals thing is a good idea. But that's actually achievable, to make a list and only hope to do each thing ONCE, lol.

Me? I’m just cleaning out my underwear drawer.

Now if I were really stepping that up, I'd actually BUY myself some new underwear. I mean, it's pretty embarrassing the state of things there. That might be a good New Year's resolution. I think I could roll with that--The Year of Take Care of Mom: 52 Things I've Been Putting Off That Need to Get Done. I should make that list!

Wow, I don't even make one resolution because I know that I can't keep it 😂

Me either, but I'm really liking the underwear idea or taking care of myself better by making a list of things to do for myself. I think I'd actually get that done now.

I started keeping my computer research notes (everything I write and think and plan and dream up) in spiral notebooks. I might start a new one for a new project, but I try NEVER to use loose paper now. So my nemesis!

For recipes, I have a notebook where I write them down from the screen to go cook, but they're never ORGANIZED. I haven't figured that part out.

I'm sure you will be happier when you do your list! Your list was smartly chosen with things that would make you happy. I think if I bought that focus planner, I'd just be planning to do things that guilt-trip me, which might result in more done but not necessarily more joy. Or maybe I would be more joyful with a cleaner floor? I'm pondering it, lol.

You do realize that has you reading six books a week, plus articles about presidents, doing crossword puzzles, reading Shakespeare and volumes about the Civil War during the week, right?  I mean, good on you, but I'm a pretty fast reader, and even with two of those being mostly picture books, that is a lot of reading.

I wrote out some goals today. They are audacious in their own way

Bible- I’m going to listen through the 1-year chronological Bible plan along with the Bible recap podcast.

Exercise- 4 days a week.

Food- intermittent fasting and cutting down sugar

Screens- I’m going to use my screen time tracker and set a yet to be determined limit.

Oh, it's all very unglamorous, lol.

-Major declutter, and develop the habits to quit re-cluttering.
-Develop cleaning routines, first for myself and then the family; the whole lead by example instead of nag with frustration.  Well, for the most part!
-Learning better time management. I do a lot of things, and they're all feeling very half-___ed. I want to be able to put my whole ___ into the things I do, without being distracted by a dozen other attention suckers or nagging thoughts.
-Read and write more.   Those tend to be things my lousy time management steals from me. I want to set more measurable goals there once I get a better handle on what my time really looks like.
-Reign in my casual spending.
-Prioritize my home repairs list and make actual plans to tackle it!
-Make 2019 the year I decide how to make some money. I constantly have "someday" ideas, but wind up talking myself out of each one. And then I hear about someone doing one of my ideas and kick myself. I need to figure out what to follow through on.
-Plan more camping trips.

Yes. I am thinking of making a list of 52 items/goals (like a mini bucket list) and then checking them off over the course of a year.

Unsinkable will you have to change your board name if you have a drink in EVERY bar in your town EACH week? Or maybe you live in a really small town.

I’m just kidding you, I love your list. Thinking a bit more on mine and gleaning inspiration from others before posting my own. Neat thread.

I thought the same thing.  My last community had 1 establishment in the entire 36 square mile township that you could by a drink at.  My new community.....way too many.

Let's see...

1 cozy mystery (these read quickly; most are more like novellas than enormous novels)

1 popular fiction or classic (these will most likely take longer)

1 article about each Pres. (These might be hard to find)

1 crossword puzzle (that is for whole week. I am going to leave it open on the table or near my bed. The logic puzzles will also be left in table)

1 hour each Spanish & Math (so 2 hours total for whole week)

30 minutes Shelby Foote per week (planning on leaving a volume in my car for down time while I'm waiting/running people around)

1 Caldecott (picture book, shouldn't take too long)

1 Newbery ( These are usually only a 3 or so hours reading time. I've read most winners and medalists thru the early 00s and then they faded from my life. I want that back)

1 article from hometown history journal (this will take about 30 mins tops for a feature).***

Write summary (this will take the form of "5 Facts": the 5 quick and simple things I want to remember from the article.)***

30 mins Shakespeare per week (another car book that I will read while waiting for my peeps)

It is a lot. The first problem I see is finding quality articles about the presidents. I was planning on looking for long form ones online.

***Many people I talk to about my home town tell me I know so much I should be a tour guide. My life is not at that place now but I want to keep learning so if I ever volunteer, I feel.confident.

OP, we need to know what those personal goals are before we can evaluate your list as worthy.

I, myself, am with Garga and Catwoman. I think this goal coupled with regular massages and yoga is ambitious enough for me...   😌

Well, Liz, when 2 people love each other very much...

LOL

They are relationship things for me and DH. 🙂

Hahaha...that was very poorly worded on my part!

1 bar per week and 1 drink at that bar.
