I read through the posts of those who are are using curriculum for children around the level of my DD. I like to see which curriculums others think will work well together. SnowWhite
Exactly, Kim (JoyofLearning). There are ladies on this forum who have been homeschooling their children since I began homeschooling mine. It is fascinating to me to watch their children grow, see how their approaches evolve, and compare my choices with theirs. It never causes second guessing for me, but it does help me refine our hs. Since it is my first year, I love seeing the types of curriculum out there. Although it might not contain pros and cons of curriculums...I can see a lot of different sigs and see how many dc they are schooling. I don't know everything. I'd like to see other ideas.  Now I'm perplexed. Why do you come here if you aren't interested in curriculum and how it is used? :001_huh:  My comment was obviously blown out of proportion - it's really not as big of a deal as some people made it to be.  It's seems perfectly legitimate to have a thread where the entire board, and lurkers, can list what they are using to homeschool. That is what many people do in their signatures who want to share (or so I thought). It was kind of a "Really, do you care?" kind of comment - not meant to offend - said in an off-the-cuff sort of way with a smilie face.  I've been on this board for a long time, I read a lot, I offer input where I feel I can help, and I've received help from others. I do use the board to research curriculum, and also to have my questions answered. A thread that lists what everyone is using does not answer questions of how a curriculum is used (again, IMO). To me, it's just a big long thread that takes up space - which is fine - who cares. Maybe this thread is helpful and beneficial to some, and a simple response indicating so would suffice. No need for anyone to get so upset, really. I was honestly asking, "Wow, does anyone actually read through all this?" I tend to forget that one must walk on eggshells on this forum. :chillpill:

The biggest value *I* get from such threads is that some people "think like me" more than others, and if I see a person who likes/uses many of the things I like/use, I will look into other things they use with more diligence. Spy Car
Bill, your son must get impossibly bored in ps math classes! How do you combat that? Â So far it has not been a problem. The program at school serves (to some degree) as review. It also has its own quirky style, so at times he does need to reason through the answers. Homework gets done fast on Math Nights, which is a huge plus. Â Boredom has not been an issue yet (although I do get, "this is so easy") but the also thanks me for teaching him better and more interesting things at home. So what's the alternative? Â He loves going to school, is super-social and being an only child (no tomatoes please) I think it is good for him to be with other children. But we still home educate and strive for the best of both worlds. Â So far, so good. Â Bill

swellmomma
start learning letter names and sounds formally (any simple ideas?) Â Â DD mastered her's by watching leap frog movies. We also recite the son from letter factory all. day. long. Drives me nuts BUT it works. The newest thing we do is play a letter hunting game. I will ask her to find a letter either by it's name or it's sound. She tells me the ooposite and finds it in whatever we are looking at. Â So for example, I might say find me the A. She will say the A says "ah" and then point it out. It might be a newspaper page I am reading, a book we are looking at or even a sign in a store. It is helping re-enforce the letter name/sound connection and that letters are all around us.

missmoe
Well, one need not worry about perplexing me, nor walk on eggshells as if perplexment (!) is to be feared. The biggest value *I* get from such threads is that some people "think like me" more than others, and if I see a person who likes/uses many of the things I like/use, I will look into other things they use with more diligence. Â Exactly! This is why I like threads like this. I've found a few things that have become fixtures in out homeschool in threads jus tlike this.
