creekland
Feel free to ignore as the chances are good that none of you knew this person IRL unless you are very close to where I live... But a good friend (from work) passed away way too young today. She was my age (within a month) and was quite healthy (healthier than I am) until they discovered her cancer. She ran in a 5K last spring (one or two months prior to learning). The news was literally unbelievable at the time. Then she was given 6 months without treatment or 18 months with. She chose with as she still has a young son at home (10 or 11). She didn't even get a year (closer to 8 or 9 months). I'm bummed, and the fact that we aren't home means I'm also going to miss her funeral I suspect, so my tribute is here. This post isn't meant nearly as much to inform any of you as it is to give me a place to write out my thoughts publicly if that makes sense (and if not, again, feel free to ignore). She worked in the Guidance Office and watched over the seniors (and more) as they were applying to colleges and figuring out their futures. She watched over my guy when he would forget deadlines and such things - even calling home one time to make sure he knew when something important was due. If she didn't see him, she'd catch me in the hall or office to make sure I was aware of opportunities he could pursue. And of course, many times we just chit chatted about the day, the weather, or any of the other things friends share. She took on her diagnoses with force and was determined to win - keeping great spirits until close to the end. She even had an option of delaying (more) things until after Christmas so she could enjoy that time with her family (since she was still feeling ok at time), but she chose to not miss a beat with the fighting options she had. She never failed to ask how I was doing - toward the end that question got difficult to answer as my results have been so much different than hers. It's a weird feeling. In the end the cancer won - way too soon. :banghead: I'm going to miss her. May you be enjoying heaven now S___ and feeling free again. Seize the day - one never knows what will happen - and don't sweat the small stuff. It's honestly not that important comparatively.

creekland
Thanks everyone. All I can add is that when I'm Grand Pumba of the Universe, diseases and issues like these will be reserved for the Hitler type dictators, Isis/Taliban type fanatics, child abusers, elder abusers, scammers and similar. They would never hit those just going around living their lives and filling an important, cherished, role in their niche of the world. Having just read her obituary, her funeral is Monday morning, so I should be able to make it to that - a small tribute to her life. My hugs to all who have BTDT and know too well what the feeling is like.

Just Kate
I'm so sorry for your loss. It is absolutely heartbreaking. I lost my best friend to cancer in November 2013. She was only 36 years old and had a 9 year old daughter. She was diagnosed on July 31 and died on November 16. I still can't believe it happened. Due to some crazy circumstances, I was at her bedside when she passed, along with her husband and daughter. I was the one to accompany her husband to the funeral home to make arrangements. When I think back to that weekend, it feels like a (bad) dream. Losing someone so young is so sad. When they have children, it seems to be even more tragic. I miss my friend every day. :(

I miss my friend every day. :( :iagree: I think we're too wired to think that there should be some reason these things happen. The person affected perhaps smoked too much or ate a diet of Twinkies and Pepsi all the time or used illegal drugs or was a couch potato inhaling junk foods or played with radioactive materials or _______. But sometimes (many times?) there's just none of this - absolutely none - and definitely less than comparative others if degrees of "badness" were to play a key. Then too, perhaps it's "understandable" when someone isn't keeping up with their health medically, etc, and "things went too far," but again, there was none of that in her situation either. In spite of what I sometimes see proclaimed via the Prosperity Gospel or the Good Nutrition Gospel or similar, it really can be just a lottery that some are unlucky with (those who get issues, but can be "cured") and some get terribly unlucky with (those with horrid results), including some board members over the past couple of years. That's the part that both boggles the mind and deeply saddens it - then double this when young children are left without a parent (as also happened with some treasured Hive members too). There are certain things in life that just shouldn't be, but are, so we truly must just seize the day as one never knows what tomorrow will bring.
