We have not gone "big shopping" in months, and we were out of everything.

Here's what I brought home:

3 lbs ground sirloin

3 lb beef roast

10 lbs chicken breast

2 lbs bacon

1 container hummus

bananas

grapes

lemons

cukes

summer squash

zucchini

bunch of basil

bunch of mint

bunch of cilantro

tomatoes

green onions

carrots

broccoli

red onion

baby potatoes

container of baby greens

container of romaine and baby spinach mixed

18 eggs

large container of greek yogurt

small container of sour cream

large container of cream cheese

frozen strawberries (large bag)

frozen mixed berries (large bag)

2 cans pineapple

2 cans sliced peaches

1 can sliced pears

1 can black olives

1 can sliced green olives

1 bottle A1

1 bottle bbq sauce

1/2 gallon OJ (on sale for half off)

1/2 gallon skim milk

1/2 gallon chocolate almond milk (my special treat!)

5 gallons spring water

4 2-liters of generic soda

taco seasoning packet

zesty Italian seasoning packet

garlic and herb seasoning packet

2 bags frozen ravioli

1 bag frozen orange chicken (impulse item!)

2 tubes pizza dough

1 packet pepperoni

3 12 oz bags shredded cheese

1 loaf ww bread

1 bag of bagels (on clearance)

1 package pita bread

1 package tortillas

3 boxes of cereal

2 cans refried beans

1 jar sliced banana peppers

1 carton ice cream

1 bag store brand salt and vinegar chips

1 bag store brand tortilla chips

1 bag store brand bbq chips

1 bag store brand pretzels

1 bag veggie straw snacks

2 boxes fiber one bars (for snacking at work)

1 2-roll package of paper towels

1 20-roll package of TP

1 120 count box of trash bags

1 80 count box of gallon zip lock bags

1 bottle bodywash

1 bottle shampoo

1 box Avengers fruit snacks (don't even ask)

1 bag hershey kisses

20 lb jug of cat litter

gallon container with spigot for flavored water in the fridge

small blender to make smoothies (my ds absconded with my blender!)

Anyone care to take a stab at the bill for all this? I shopped at Meijer, if that helps. I will say that this list would be fairly typical of a "big shopping" trip for us, sans the blender and gallon container. I think my bill was about 1/3 more than what I've paid in the past.

I stopped tallying at 100 estimated in groceries.. 300?

eta: I say that only because you didn't say how much of all your fresh produce and like for us we eat 3 large bunches of bananas a week, 3 cartons of strawberries, three bags of grapes, etc... and I just spent 180 this week :/

My guess is that while many of those items will be permanent (blender) or last 2 or 3 months (paper goods, sauces, frozen items etc.)... the meat and most of the dry/canned goods will be gone in 2 or 3 weeks, and the produce and dairy will be gone in one week (or less).

No organics. Total bill was $345. I about DIED. :svengo:

I actually can't say whether you expected it to be more or less. In our Canadian Costco this would be around $500.

I feel your pain. Our last bill was $285. I don't think I had ever spent that much on regular groceries. I nearly choked when I saw the slip. If my husband hadn't packed half the stuff in the car already, I would have sent him back in.

It's the paper goods and shampoo that always gets me. Also, of course, unexpected blender needs.

I try to get that stuff at Target or Costco, as they have much better prices than the regular grocery store.

Exactly. TP is outrageous! Especially when you have 4 girls in your home.

Not including the orange chicken, canned pears, or pizza dough, and subbing regular beans for refried, and pretending I can get 120-ct or 80-ct trash bags or ziplock bags (instead I put in the price for the biggest size/poorest quality I actually can get), my guestimate came out at R$757 which right now at today's exchange rate is US $360. I guessed on some things.

this is, however, proof to myself that any shock I'll feel at US grocery prices will be in the "I can't believe how cheap stuff is!" direction, not vice versa, as my dad keeps telling me.

(in all honestly, the trash bags I buy are about 50 centavos/bag; I did not put that price into the equation and instead doubled the price of the cheapo bags on a roll that I don't buy 'cause they tear. That comes with 50 bags on the roll and is R$15/US $7-ish. The bags I actually buy are R$5 for 10 bags....)

Aldi.

I drive 45min to shop Aldi about 1x per month. I fill 2 grocery carts to overflowing and spend about $300. I buy fresh meats & frozen veggies mostly. Very little canned/boxed.

I hit Walmart (I hate walmart, but...) at least 1x per month for things I can't find at Aldi. Then I shop local for the rest.

I still end up spending a crazy amount on groceries, but it's much less than shopping a main chain weekly for certain.
