In which strider's dh pulls off the Best Boys' Birthday Party. EVER.

Recommended Posts

My dh has officially ascended into the exalted ranks of Really Cool Dad today. He put an unbelievable amount of time and effort into planning the most amazing birthday party for our 11yo ds today.

15 of ds' friends met us at the forest preserve. We started them off with some Ultimate Frisbee (like soccer but with a frisbee), which they loved.

We had told the boys to bring backpacks. We gave each boy a bag of provisions (manly stuff like beef jerky, lol), an animal track stamp and a small, blank book. The boys were split into two teams and given a map, a compass, and the first clue.

Dh had hidden tiny plastic boxes all over the woods. The boys had to figure out the clues and use their compasses to locate the boxes. Once located, they stamped the book in the box to show they were there and read the clue to the next box. The teams were competing to see who could complete the hunt the quickest, plus answer a bonus questionnaire about forest preserve features, and they lost 200 points each for every bit of litter we found. (After the hunt dh went back and collected all the treasure boxes, bless him.)

The boys had a MAGNIFICENT time kamikazing all over the woods for nearly two hours. They covered quite a bit of ground.

We then did a tug of war, which they loved.

We then took them to a section of the forest preserve that was 2/3 open field with little patches of brush and trees here and there. It was the perfect area for Capture the Flag, which they played for a while.

No one had ever been to a birthday party in the woods before. They thought it was SO COOL.

Dh is completely exhausted, but ds says he had "the best birthday party of my entire life." :thumbup1:
