Is it too early for a "what are you using next year" thread?

Recommended Posts

I am specifically thinking about my 7th grader. That is, if we both live to see the end of 6th grade.

Math: probably Lial's prealgebra

Grammar: I'm trying to decide between continuing with R&S (7) or switching to AG. We are both kinda burnt out with R&S.

Writing: finish WWS 1...hoping WWS 2 is ready in the fall

Vocabulary: Vocabulary from Classical Roots

History, Bible, Poetry, Geography, Literature: Sonlight core G

Science: BJU life science

Art: Probably Artistic Pursuits Jr High book 1 (we've used AP for two years, and I like it)

Music: She is learning some basic music theory right now, and I have no idea where to go with that for next year. I also need to incorporate more composer study. I've slacked in that area.

Spanish: I don't know. We've done Getting Started with Spanish this year, but it's been hit and miss. I need inexpensive suggestions. We might not even attempt a foreign language again for a couple of years.

Logic: Fallacy Detectives maybe

I feel like I'm missing something. What is it? Too much? Too little? I'd love suggestions for music (specifically music appreciation), Spanish, and logic.

Probably not too early...but I'm not ready! I need to start figuring things out before we hit the convention so I can do my shopping! Here's a tentative plan for the soon to be 6th grader:

Math: AOPS Algebra...supplemented with something else

History: SOTW 4

Science: ACS Chemistry and finish physics (we're behind)

Writing: WWS

Grammar: R&S, possible repeat of level 6:glare:

I have BJU LIfe in front of me and am trying to decide if I want to do it or not. Are you using the video or going at it alone? Do you have a schedule yet?

We are using BJU science 6 this year, and we LOVE it. I don't think we will use the video for a couple of reasons: 1) we can't afford it, and 2) I'm a science person so I feel pretty confident teaching it. I don't have a schedule yet because I haven't bought it. I'm hoping to find it used!

If you get the 2nd edition I have the schedule Mrs. Vick uses that a friend of mine sent me. It schedules the book out into 160 days.

I agree with pp who said it's not too early, I'm just not ready! I will have an 8th grader.

I would like to outsource more next year, but online options are out (Hughes Net - pathetic download limits) and local options are still unsure. So, in case outsourcing doesn't work out, here's the back up plan:

Bible - BSF

History - 20th Century focusing on American History we missed the first time

Science - not sure.... Rainbow is one option

Grammar - AG

Writing - IEW

Lit. - LLfLOTR

Spelling - SWO (Yes, he still needs it, LOL).

Math - Pre-Algebra of some kind, maybe Saxon or Horizons, <sigh>

Logic - some of Critical Thinking in U.S. History and/or Arg. Builder or DOD (see how decided I am?)

Spanish - Visual Link

We need to do typing too.

Extras - Chess, Basketball

I will have a 6th grader and an 8th grader. I had all of my plans for next year set in stone and then those niggling self-doubts set in and I have changed some things. I am not sure if I am going to like these changes but I'm going with them for now. Here is my revised plan:

6th grade

Math--BJU 6

Grammar--Winston

Writing--WWS 2 plus CW Homer (tweaking it heavily so we can use it with WWS

History, Bible, Geography, Literature--TOG Yr. 4

Science--Story of Science with various experiment kits

8th grade

Math--MUS Algebra plus LoF Algebra

Grammar--Stewart English

Writing--CW Diogenes Chreia plus WWS 2 (tweaking it so we can use it with CW)

Vocab--Vocabulary from Classical Roots

Logic--Memoria Press

History, Bible, Geography, Literature--TOG Yr. 4

Science--Apologia--Physical Science

Latin--Henle

Foreign Language--not too sure about this. She wants to learn French but I am just not sure if this will be too heavy a load along with latin.

For 8th grade, here's what it looks like so far...

Math: We do math mostly year round now...dd will be in the middle of Saxon 8/7 with DIVE next fall, then she'll head right into Alg 1. (Dh is now working with her and she is suddenly soaring! We've decided that this is going to be a permanent arrangement. :))

Grammar: I'm settled on either AG or Hake. One way or another, it's going to be straight grammar.

Writing: WWS 2 whenever it's ready, plus WTM style dictation, narrative essays, reports and outlining.

Vocabulary: Vocabulary from Classical Roots, book B

History: Notgrass America the Beautiful, plus supplemental American Heritage videos and some original source documents.

Bible: Words of Wisdom (Explorer's Bible Study series). Dd is also actively involved with a Bible Quiz team that memorizes tons of scripture.

Geography: Mapping the World by Heart. Dd and I are going to do this together.

Literature: ATB literature to accompany the history, but since it's pretty light we'll be adding numerous selections from TWTM list for 8th grade literature. We'll also be reading a bit of poetry by American poets.

Science: Apologia Physical Science

Art: As always, from me, her mother the art teacher. This year she may also take part in a class that I teach to private students.

Music: Dd will continue with guitar lessons and singing with the youth worship team at church.

French: We'll continue with The Learnables, moving up to Level 2, but I'm hoping to add Rosetta Stone sometime this year if we can find it to borrow. If not, then we'll pick up more French with Live Mocha and other free Internet options.

Logic: I'm looking seriously at Discovery of Deduction. We've been in the Bluedorn books for two years now, so we should be ready to move into more formal logic.

Blessings,

Lucinda

I already answered on the 5th grade thread, but will post again, as I am so excited after making our choices:

Rod and Staff 6th grade Math and Spelling, 5th grade English

Classical House of Learning logic stage Ancients

WTM logic stage history, ancients

Art: continue Drawing with Children, SOTW1 projects, and What Your 5th Grader Needs to Know, and nature journaling with science should keep us busy.

Music: continue piano at home with Alfred Piano, find an instructor hopefully, and R&S growing with music book and workbook

Science: Memoria Press 5th grade, Exploring the World of Biology and a dissection kit, and a Microscope and the book, A World in a Drop of Water. So we will be doing 4 separate units over the year. I will schedule it better when I have all of the materials in hand. I am so excited over all of these!

I want to share with everyone that I am sooo impressed with everyone's schedule. I agree that it is not too early to plan for next year, but I have to admit that I am truly stumped with my younger son. I have no clue what to teach him for next year. This year has been very difficult on so many aspects. It seems as if where we had triumph in some areas, we are having major struggles in another. Stuff that I wanted to get to with him, I never got to and now I feel like if we started it would be like scratching out of a bag.

So, in the past, I have been very efficient in having a plan. My older son is going into high school next year and I am nervous about did I do all that he needed. My younger son is going into 7th grade and I am in uncertain waters right now.

This might change in a month or two, but right now, I will admire others schedule. I know for a fact that 85% of these schedules I cannot do with my younger son. I have come to a crossroad with him. I have to go into deep prayer about him before I come up with a sincere program for him next year.

I know that there is hope and that's what keeps me going on this journey!

Blessings,

Karen

She could write me a report on each book. She enjoys history and already reads that on her own. She and I have personality clashes so we'll see. She is heavily involved with local theater and plays soccer and basketball, youth group, Girl Scouts and Boys & Girls Club.

I thought I had it all planned out, but then you can see here, I really don't.

That said, I do know we'll be using (with a 6th grader):

  • Brave Writer Lifestyle/Writer's Jungle
  • LOF Fractions and Decimals & Percents, along with Math Mammoth (Blue series)
  • The Way Things Work, The Way We Work, and one more book as science "spines"

Everything else is up in the air. :glare:
