My plan is to finish up Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and the Rivers of London series this month. I have too many series going simultaneously. I also have the sixth Flavia mystery queued up on audio.

It's been a few weeks since I last checked in. We are finally settling into a fall routine, so hopefully I can keep up with the board more consistently for the rest of the year. I really didn't like the main character, so this one fell flat for me. 2 stars 📚Strange The Dreamer by Taylor - I liked the premise of this young adult book, and it was well written, but the prologue made the ending too obvious, too early in so I had to force myself to finish. 3 stars 📚Darkside Blues by Carven - A nice novella in the Dark Warriors series 4 stars 📚Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Fluke - A nice start to a cozy mystery series with some very tempting cookie recipes spread throughout the book 4 stars 📚Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by Rawling - A fun reread for the twentieth anniversary. 5 stars 📚Hexed by Hearne - As delightful as the first audiobook, I'm really enjoying this series 5 stars 📚Equal Rites by Pratchett - This one was only so-so for me. I chose this for the gemstone challenge and found it delightful. The world has potential, but I was apathetic about the characters and the plot was stagnant. 1 star 📚 59. Hounded by Hearne - Best book of the month by far! Another 4 star book. 📚The Housewife Assassin's Handbook by Brown - I found the premise behind her being hired as an assassin ridiculous, and her lack of regard for her children made her unlikable to me. 2 stars 📚 Odd and the Frost Giants by Gaiman - Short, entertaining tale of a young crippled Viking boy who helps three displaced Norse gods. 4 stars. 📚B Is for Burglar by Grafton - Second Kinsey Millhone book where the PI takes a missing person case. I figured out the ending ahead of time but still enjoyed watching the story unfold. 4 stars. 📚Bloody Jack by Meyer - I finished this audio book for the seaworthy bingo square. 2 stars. They made a great escape from Eggers' book. 📚The Amulet of Samarkand by Stroud - I picked this back up at page 75 and finished it in an afternoon - 5 star fun Long Term Reads 📚ESV Bible - currently working through Second Chronicles 📚The History of the Ancient World - three more chapters: the Zhous in China, more India, and Greece emerges Currently Reading 📚The Circle by Eggers - I read all of part one and am hating the book. I'm considering adding it to my abandon pile. 📚Bloody Jack by Meyer - should finish my audiobook this week, I have The Razor's Edge for the read along and should be able to read two parts this week. I need to sit down and prioritize my tbr stack to see what needs to be returned soon. I have way too many books, so I'm going to try not to add holds this week.

I went browsing the Amazon prime library and found Dark Planet Warriors by Anna Carven. I enjoyed it enough to use my $5 promo code to buy it and the next two books in the series, Dark Planet Falling and Into the Light. I read all three and rated them four stars (the links above to go my reviews).

Finished This Week (Books 42-44) 📚Crystal Clear by Jane Heller - I grabbed this one on a whim of a library endcap for the April birthstone challenge. 3 stars. 📚The Power of Habit by Duhigg - This was my latest nonfiction read. He did a good job of explaining how habits worked, and many of his example were entertaining, but most of the information on changing a habit was in an appendix. 3 stars. 📚Homicide in Hardcover by Carlisle - A delightful cozy mystery that I should thank Theresa for helping me discover. 4 stars. Long Term Reads 📚ESV Bible - I finished First Chronicles and am now 25% of the way through.🢠📚The History of the Ancient World - I finished part three!!😸 Currently reading 📚Bloody Jack by Meyer - a YA audio book for my seaworthy bingo square. I'm almost halfway done and finding it to be a fun tale. The narrator's voice reminds me of Jackie the mom in the first two seasons of Doctor Who. 📚The Amulet of Samarkand by Stroud - My ds got into the book and finished it well ahead of me, so I checked out the rest of the series to keep him occupied. I still plan to finish as I am enjoying it. I had trouble focusing on anything for the first part of the week but finally managed to finish two books. Long Term Reads 📚ESV Bible - I finished Second Kings this week and began First Chronicles. I found myself wishing for a more visual genealogy rather than the long lists of names. 📚History of the Ancient World - I finished three more chapters on China, the Aryans of India, and the Assyrians Finished This Week (Books 40-41) 📚 A Is for Alibi- I enjoyed the fact that this was a basic detective story with an ordinary private investigator and basic policework. It was a nice change of pace from stories that are driven more by either forensics or psychology. 5 stars. 📚From The Beast to the Blonde - I finally finished and to me it was not worth the effort. 1 star. Currently Reading 📚The Power of Habit by Duhigg - Finally starting to make some real progress on this with the Warner book complete. He cites a remarkably diverse set of examples from the founder of AA to a NFL coach to a former CEO of Alcoa. 📚Bloody Jack by Meyer- my current audiobook for the seaworthy bingo square. They're just putting out to sea. Interesting so far. 📚The Amulet of Samarkand by Stroud - I've assigned this to ds1 for lit. Actually since he blew through the Lord of the Rings trilogy so quickly in the fall, I'm using lit as an excuse to throw a bunch of new books and authors at him with the hope that he finds more series to enjoy, which means reading along with him since it's new to me as well. 📚Crystal Clear by Heller - I picked this up for the gemstone challenge since I've been reading books with the color of the gem in the title and will try to finish it this week.

I am almost finished slogging through this (only 4 more chapters). In the second half I've enjoyed the section covering various versions of Cinderella and a few discussions about the lives of specific female authors. Otherwise every time she mentions Freud I want to bang my head. I've settled for skimming the parts that have no interest for me which is sadly still a larger part of each chapter. An interesting post. I agree with others that I will slog through a classic or a group read, but the wrong tone (preachy, narrowminded, etc.) in a modern book and I don't have the patience to finish. I managed to finish three books last week for a total of 39 and checked off two more bingo squares. I also abandoned The Golem and the Jinni. I just couldn't get into the audiobook. I may try again later with a print version. I finally finished reading The Invisible Library by Cogman which I'm counting for my steampunk bingo square. Not sure what I'll start next for fiction. Robin, does the eastern Europe bingo square have to be set exclusively in eastern Europe or can I count Silence Fallen since part of the action is set in Prague?

I finished three books this week since receiving the new Mercy Thompson book meant I postponed any housework to read it start to finish on Saturday afternoon. This brings my total for the year to 36. Long Term Reads 📚ESV Bible - finished Second Samuel and am about halfway through First Kings 📚History of the Ancient World - read chapters 30-32 covering the Shang dynasty, the Mycenaeans, and Egypt's Amenhotep III and his son 📚From The Beast to the Blonde - I finished chapters 13-16. They were okay. I enjoyed seeing the changes in the individual stories over time and culture, but honestly most of the other analysis was still tedious. (I've never had much use for Freud, and I disliked some of the sweeping generalizations about cultural norms.) Finished Last Week 📚Silence Fallen by Briggs - 5 stars. I think adding more of Adam's view increased my enjoyment of the book compared to others in the series. 📚The Big Four by Christie - I didn't really enjoy the shadow conspiracy. It wasn't that believable to me; however, the book still managed to be entertaining anyway. 📚The Obesity Code by Fung - Well reasoned and clearly written. Currently Reading 📚The Invisible Library by Cogman - I made some progress this week before getting sidetracked by Mercy and expect to finish this week. 📚The Golem and the Jinni - started this week on audiobook. I finished The Obesity Code by Fung and wrote a long review. Next up for nonfiction, The Power of Habit by Duhigg which I borrowed from Amazon's Prime library.

I've been looking for something to fill that Eastern Europe square as well. Thanks! Mystery and Harry Potter peeked my interest, but to throw in Doctor Who as well... (I'm currently in the last episode of season 2 through Amazon Prime.) So much for my resolution not to place any more holds.😋 An open library tab is definitely a must. I put the same two on hold. I was happy to see Spaceman of Bohemia would take 3-4 weeks. I had told myself that anything without a waiting line would go on my wish list instead until I catch up with my current stack, but alas Stacia's post was too tempting to pass up. :drool: (Maybe I can manage a resolution of not picking up new holds until next Saturday.)

I finally got my hands on Etched in Bone Friday and declared an afternoon holiday. I did pause long enough to start the spaghetti cooking for dinner (after all, hungry kids interrupt more often), but otherwise I read start to finish.😸 In total I finished four books this week. Long term reads 📚ESV Bible - finished First Samuel and am about a third of the way through Second Samuel 📚The History of the Ancient World - covered chapters 27-29 on the beginning of Egypt's New Kingdom and the Mitanni kingdom in the upper fertile crescent area 📚From the Beast to the Blond - I stepped up my pace to four chapters reading 9 through 12 this week in order to finish the book before it has to be returned. This means I've finished part one and am on to the stories. :party: Finished this week (Books 30-33) 📚Etched in Bone by Bishop - a wonderful, amazing 5 star ending to the series. I will most likely read it a second time this month before returning it to the library. I love the Others.😻 (This is also my bingo sci-fi square.) 📚The Hidden Oracle by Riordan - His Greek mythology based books are my favorite, so I did a one day listening marathon to finish before Overdrive reclaimed my audiobook. 📚The Mystery of the Blue Train by Christie - Another great Hercules Poirot mystery that was also my March gemstone read 📚The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Kondo - I love her folding method. I've only cleared a few subcategories of my clothes so far, but just clothes may take a few months with the outgrown kids items I need to go through as well. Currently Reading 📚The Invisible Library by Cogman - I set this aside last week, but I'm hoping to finish this week. I find it entertaining but not riveting. 📚The Golem and the Jinni by Wecker - This is my next audiobook selection, and one of many books I've marked to-read after seeing it mentioned in this board. 📚The Obesity Code by Fung - my next nonfiction read and another board discovered book I have a few physical books nearing their loan limits, am waiting on the new Mercy Thompson book, and absolutely did not need to go peruse the new books now available through Prime but did anyway and added to my Kindle waiting stack as well. So many books, so little time.😜

Finished book 31, The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie for my March birthstone challenge this afternoon. I also decided to up my goal for the year from 52 to 71.
