No real losers. We dropped some things for a bit, but have picked them back up and are doing ok. We did start with Trisms and dropped that for SL 5. My dc like a little more structure than Trisms offers, but I still love the idea behind the program.

Is this the one with readers called: Fun in the Sun, Scamp and Tramp, Soft and White, At the Farm, Sounds of the Sea, (and I think there's one more!)?

We use these readers and LOVE them!!! They've been out of print for awhile (which is why I usually don't mention them), but I'm not sure if Children's Books ever got the rights to start printing them again or not.

I never had the whole program - just the readers.

YES! Oh you should get the program if you can (or need). It is so good.:)

Children's Books has had quite a time of it with this curriculum and getting the rights to it. Last I heard (several months back) they were printing them again. I bought 2 sets after my first dd went through it 5 years ago. I planned to copy the worksheets if the program went out of print altogether (having asked them about it first). It's so well put together and builds such a strong foundation in reading!:)

The only Loser we had was English From the Roots Up because we just couldn't get around to getting going with it. I'm sure it's a good program, I just needed something more laid out to keep me on track.

In the past a big Loser, though I wanted to like it, was Saxon Math. It just never fit our family. Also A Beka Math we LOVED through 2nd grade, liked in 3rd grade and disliked after that.

Literature: SL6 historical fiction readers for the ancients

This is what I'm using for literature next year to correspond with SOTW2. I'm not planning to use all the books though. :)

Losers:

The Mystery of History (relegated to supplemental material)

Biblioplan (I like BP but dropped it when I stopped MOH - I was mainly using it to make MOH more interesting)

Growing with Grammar

Sonlight Science 3 (I really, really like SL science and have used other levels successfully but this became tedious and my son was begging for chemistry rather than so much biology. He loves to read so this was relegated to free reading rather than "school".)

Winners:

WinterPromise's Animals and their Worlds (we didn't really use this the WP way because my son was very independent with the material. He loved it though.)

Handwriting Without Tears (been using this long-term, love it)

MathUSee (ditto)

KISS Grammar (this is new for us and I love it - it's just what I think grammar should be)

Ambleside Online (exactly what I was looking for!)

Sonlight Readers and Read Alouds (these are always a hit)

Adventures in Atoms and Molecules (we have had alot of fun with this)

Phonics Pathways

English from the Roots Up

I am most happy about finding AO and KISS Grammar. Both of these have made my life significantly easier, and my son has responded very favorably to both.

Dawn, I'm sure SL6 books will work great with your younger aged children. : ) My boys are at that picky teenage stage. (lol) -- Lori

It'll be a big change for us - my dd has done Rod and Staff Bible/Reading since grade 1. So not only are we shifting into literature now, it's all from one era and she'll be doing much more narration. :001_smile:

Would you tell me what you didn't like? I have looked at it briefly and it seemed interesting...

Thanks

It probably would've been fine with younger students, but my boys were bored to tears. It was very scripted .. sort of the way Saxon Math is. And the questions were wayyy too simple for my boys (3rd & 8th grade, btw).

So even though the grades listed on the curriculum matched, it just wasn't a good fit.

It probably would've worked well in 1st or 2nd grade...no higher than 3rd grade.

OK I will play too!

DD12

Winners:

Galore Park's Spanish, French, Greek and Latin - these have helped us along in our language study further than anything else I have done.

Basic College Math - DD was excited in the beginning. Then we got to Chapter 6 and she floundered. She is back to liking it and doing well.

Lightning Lit 7- she really enjoys this.

CW Poetry - love it now that I finally got the hang of it

Losers: None

DS9

Winners:

Latin Prep 1: He is doing this orally as all the writing was slowing him down.

NEM1: He is finally getting to the challenging stuff.

CW Poetry - love it now that I finally got the hang of it

Loser:

All About Spelling - he did not enjoy the tiles and the repetition

OK: things DD12 and DS9 do together

Right Start Geometry - just not enough time for it, but what we did do was pretty good.

History Odyssey Ancients - I liked that it was all planned out. The kids surprisingly did enjoy the KFE and all the outlining. I wanted more depth and less jumping around.

Ecce Romani - supposed to be done once a week but we run out of time and Friday is usually our catch up day.

DS9 only: Reading Detective - He needs to read more fiction (prefers purely no-fiction) and this is wetting his appetite.

DS7

Winners:

First Language Lessons

Losers:

LLB

Recorder - my ears can't take his practicing

4.My Pals Are Here--Especially the Critical Thinking Skills Workbook

5.Great Books

6.How to Write a Story from IEW

7.Books on CD from the library--Listening to stories together has

improved DD's understanding of story and given us many hours of

good discussion. One of her observations, "Why do so many

children's, stories no matter the setting, have a missing parent?"

Things were going to change:

1.Shurley--DD finds this too boring and repetitive.

2.Kendall Hunt Patterns of Change--I like the it, but it needs to be

modified for home school use.

3.Saxon Math

Always a winner

Sonlight - all cores!!

This year's winners

Word Power Made Easy (scheduled in SL 530) - my dd (12th grade) says it is the best vocab book ever (and she has used Vocab from Classical Roots and Wordly Wise and liked them too)

Musictheory.net - free online music theory exercises (used by 9th grader)

Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2 (9th grader)

Losers

SOS Health - 9th grader - some of the things they said were ridiculous! Someone needs to write a decent Health Curriculum - this is the 2nd one we've tried and hated

Abeka English Lang for 9th grade - only piece of curriculum I've ever allowed a kid to abandon ...

Winners:

8th grade

Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2

Omnibus 2

Apologia Physical Science

Total Health

Analytical Grammar

3rd grade-we skipped around between:

FLL 3-took with us in the car for the down time between classes

Just Write-Quick 5 minute lesson for crazy days

Writing Tales-for days with more time

Reading comprehensions guides from Veritas Press

Saxon math 3 was okay but we added some homemade worksheets to add a more hands on approach instead of the typical problems. ie she would measure a room or a table instead of a line on the paper.

Videos from United Streaming were a hit to break up a boring day or to add clarity to a missunderstood subject.

Losers:

Noeo looked great but was hard to keep up with a bunch of books. I am discovering that I often love the appeal of this style but get tired of having to track down a bunch of resources...even if we own them. This was definitely much more my fault than the curriculum's.
