  1. I downloaded fonts from a web site called letteringdelights.com that allowed me to make my own sheets for penmanship. You can get cursive and d'nealian and you can do it with lines, without lines, and a trainer that is ghosted in. They put their fonts on sale several times a year for $1 each. If you sign up for their newletter they will let you know when they have a sale. Hope this helps.
  2. Has anyone used MOH with middle/high school students? I would love to see your pros & cons list for MOH. Thanks!
  3. I, myself, am waffling between Jacob's and Foerster's. It is a hard decision to make without seeing all the choices and knowing how your child learns best. Both of my choices challenge the student and my son is quick with his math concept. He tends to be lazy and so I am leaning towards Jacob's which I understand is a bit more "fun". I am waiting for Foerster's to arrive in my mailbox as we speak so that I can compare the two. Good luck!
  4. Linda, Momof3gifts lives in Enid. I live in Sapulpa. It is really hard to keep people straight on this board. We can't put names with faces. But if you hear of a classical conversations group starting in Sapulpa.......LOL! It has been really nice to "meet" all of you guys!
  5. The idea of classifying is important in english.....and math......and science....I am pretty sure that you have covered the concept before. If you haven't then you might want to consider covering the concept in a different way. We have sorted buttons (size, shape, # of holes,...), shoes (sandals, tennis shoes, laces, buckles,...), etc. You do not have to use the categories they give you in Shurley. Find something that you have a variety of and sort it. That's the big idea. Make sure that your child knows how to sort things........don't sweat the small stuff! Hope this is helpful!
  6. Stacey (who has posted on this thread) and I and another friend from the Glenpool area are going to be at the CHEER meeting also. We will look for you guys. We planned on going last year and never made it.
  7. I would like to meet up with you guys but i believe that one of my dc has dance camp that week. Please PM me the park location. We have not been to Tulsa since gas prices went up. We could make it apark in the morning and an errand afternoon. I will be there if I can - if not - maybe next time. I also do not have my dc in my signature line (I will have to experiment with that). I have only two (unusual in hsing I know!) ds - Noah (12yrs) & 7th-ish grade....dd - Audrey-Grace (9yrs) & 3rd-ish grade.
  8. We are a former military family (although they do say "Once a marine...always a marine!) but I know what you mean. Homeschooling seemed very popular in the military and I would think that more moms would be on from a base town. Maybe you will have to advertise around the base. You know.....Needed: Classical Home Educators to share ideas on a message board. :001_smile: It seems hard to find area homeschoolers in OK - the groups are so fragmented. In Pensacola we had pretty much just on group with smaller cell groups that were divided by location or area of interest. I am still looking for other like-minded hs families in the Sapulpa area. If there are any of you out there please let me know....
  9. I have a friend that is waffling between to two. I have never used SOS so I can't give her feedback on pros and cons. Can anyone help? Thanks!
  10. Timeline notebook pages........vertical VS landscape......any opinions?
  11. I read in the WTM that it is important to keep the rate of time the same on your timelines. I really believe that this is important also but when I look at commercial timelines (School in the Woods & Sonlight) they change the range of years per page as time proceeds. My questions are these: 1. Do you think it is important to keep the scale constant? 2. If you have made your own timeline - keeping the scale constant - what scale did you use in a notebook? on the wall? 3. What materials did you use for a notebook timeline? Looking forward to your ideas! :001_unsure:
  12. Thanks Martha! I am going to check out the entymology department first. Do you have any contact information on that? Have any of you gone to the sheep farm in Claremore? It is really neat for all ages. The lady takes you through the sheep farm and teaches you all about the sheep and at the same time she correlates the sheeps needs with what is written in the 23rd Psalm. It is truly fascinating! I believe the farm is called Shepherd's Cross.
  13. I use the thread tools to subscribe to my threads. Then each time I get on I can go to Control Panel and see which ones have new activity. You would still have to find all your old threads by doing a search so that you can subscribe to them. Hope that helps....
  14. :iagree: My son hated it at the beginning of Level 6 - we are almost done and it has move up to tolerable but he has learned a lot!!! Sometimes it's good to stick with a good thing even if you hate it.
  15. Shaving cream its great! You can write in it or "ice" a large carwashing sponge. When you are done - just rinse. We use it outside or on a plastic placemat (we call them table protectors).
  16. Whatever happened to starting school after Labor Day? Actually, we started late last year and are still finishing up a few things. Between that and camp we will not start to at least the second week in August. :001_huh:
  17. Years ago I was recommended a good latin root dictionary of some kind. It may even have had other roots in it. Does anyone know the book I'm talking about? It was very useful and I wish I could remember the name.
  18. Haven't read it since high school but loved it then.............think I'll read it again soon!
  19. I second sign language. I believe it counts as a FL credit just about everywhere and children seem to like it and want to learn it. It is the language that has lead to the least amount of apathy at our house and is useful to us. We use it to say things across the room without having to holler and I can say things without embarassing my dc. We even use it now when learning another language b/c we can sign the new word as we say it. Just a thought....
  20. I have waffled a bit and from talking to people here, narrowed it down to Jacob's and Foerster. Jacob's sounds a little more laid back and fun while still being rigorous enough to prepare my ds for what comes next. B/c he is young I think that Jacob's approach will appeal to him. Jacob's tries to make the math interesting and has an SAT type question at the end of each chapter. We will use Jacob's for Geometry too. Then we will switch to Foerster for Algebra II. I have a copy of Jacob's if you have any specific questions.
  21. As for good reasons to join a group....my children really like the social aspect of doing fieldtrips and group activities with other children occasionally.....I really like doing those with children of like-minded parents that usually have very similar expectations of their children. As for "secular humanist beliefs"....I believe that that means that they don't believe that man evolved from monkey......"old earth" VS "new earth" creation is a debate among christian. I think that there seem to me an almost even number of the two. And there are those who choose not to try to fathom all the complexities of the scienctific evidence VS the bible. If you feel that creation is not the issue but that "old" VS "new" earth is - just ask if it is a problem. Then you can join with a clean conscience. I am glad that you hesitate to sign something you are not sure you agree with. Shows great moral fiber! I would give you a high-5 for that if we were not on a message board! LOL!! Seriously, I am going to look into it b/c I was considering CHEER myself and would have the same issue. I will let you know what I discover.
