3rd grade plans?

Is there by chance a thread of what people are using with their 3rd graders? I didn't find anything using the search function. I'd love to know what other people are planning. I like getting ideas from hearing what others are doing.

My current plan for my 3rd grader is to use Ages of Grace which will cover History, Literature, Religion, Picture Study, Narration and Geography. Most of that will be done together as a family. Otherwise he'll be finishing up MM 3 and starting MM 4. I have New American Cursive for handwriting and MCT's Building Language for vocabulary. I'm undecided on spelling, grammar and science right now. He did Growing with Grammar 2 last year.

We are running a little behind, but by late fall my third grader should be doing:

Math: SM 3a/3b + IP & CWP, Miquon

LA: WWE 3, FLL 3, Writing Strands 2, GWG 3, AAS 3/4, Modern Age Lit. From Classical House of Learning, Building Language

History: SOTW 3 using AG

Science: RSO Chemistry

Music/Art: Harmony Fine Arts level 3

Latin: Song school Latin

Handwriting still undecided...leaning toward italics. We may also use Music of the Hemispheres, but possibly not until next summer. I might drop GWG as well. I used it for busy work/reinforcement this year and ds enjoys it. I just really don't think it is necessary.

For my 3rd grader:

Math-Singapore

Latin-Latina Christiana

French-L'Art de Lire (Levels 4-6)

English-Copybook, dictation, Italics D, Intermediate Lang. Lessons and Imitations in Writing Fairy Tales(pulling from both of these as we like) and oral and written narrations

History-Modern Times (Finish Child's History of the World and Our Island Story) with supplements

History-Ancient Greece (She really wanted this...like her big sister:001_smile:) with Famous Men of Greece (I think) and D'Aulaires Greek Myths with guide

Science-many topics...Burgess Bird Book, units in Astronomy, Among the Night People, Madame How and Lady Why with Earth Science experiments/activities

ETA: Almost forgot Literature...The Little White Horse, Arabian Nights (selections), Poetry, Swallows and Amazons, Children of the New Forest and others

Geography-Paddle to the Sea and something else...

Bible-Golden Children's Bible with guide

Art-picture/artist study, drawing, watercolors, etc.

Music-composer study and piano

Extra-Curricular....we're moving next week so not sure what we'll end up with...maybe ballet again or gymnastics...maybe looking into Girl Scouts again

ETA:

P.S. My list looks long for several reasons but the main one being I don't use an all-in-one curriculum like Sonlight, HOD or LBC which includes all the individual books for history, bible, literature, science, readers, etc. Since I don't use a curriculum, I tend to spell out what I'm doing by listing the specific titles. Just thought I'd mention that...LOL...so that others don't think we are horribly overdoing this.

I was JUST thinking the same thing. :)

Truth be told I almost DIDN'T put the number in, out of shame ;) that my kid is doing average/grade level work. (Clearly, I need to get a grip.)

My son is multiplying and such, but I think that with math, starting a bit later on the paper writing part is not so bad. I mean... he's only 7 (will be 8 in a few weeks) I always have assumed that we'll continue through summers... (as I'm sure you might, too :)) and this way we'll be on schedule... later :)

Plus, summers are good for all the games that I haven't done so far....

I love Singapore, and the numbers don't mean anything except at some point, we'll have to start picking up speed, right?

I'm in it for the long haul... so.... I'd rather him play outside a bit more before realizing that he has 12 yrs or so... of school left... (college and such :))

I like to remind myself that for every time I think about not mentioning something like that, a bunch of other people probably actually don't mention it ;)

:iagree: (my son's the same age as yours--a few weeks away from 8, so I figure he's a very young 2nd grader anyway). I'm hoping for a big "click" (like he had with reading last year) that will speed things up a good bit. But I'm not worrying about it much at the moment.

My poor guinea pig daughter... We're switching things around. Again.

Bible- Community Bible Study. We'll be studying the Gospel of Luke.

Math - TT4 and Math Mammoth as a supplement

Spelling - finish AAS2 and AAS 3

Handwriting - HWOT Cursive

The LA looks like overkill. :glare:

History - continue with SOTW2

Science - RSO Chem

I'd really like to try "A Child's Geography", but not sure if we could fit everything in.

No idea what's for art. Nothing sticks.

Modern Hebrew. Not sure what we're going to use.

Swimming

For Mindbender type puzzles with many more puzzles per book, you should look at Perplexors by Mindware.

You might want to also look at Balance Benders from CT company. They are amazing for pre-algebra concepts and logic.

I will probably get Logic Countdown which is the first in a series of 3 books that are also excellent for leading into formal logic studies.

Yea that one made my heart sing :-). I have found over the years that with the young ones especially, the less transition from subject to subject to subject, the more effective the teaching and the less apt to get into that 'just get it done' mode.

DS will be 8 in August and starting 3rd Grade Oct 31. (It's odd that it falls on that day, but we don't keep Halloween & it just happens to be the Monday after our break.)

We still have a while, so things may change, but as of now the plan is:

Bible: Finish NT and start OT in a CM sorta way. (Using this format.)

Language Arts: Studied copywork for grammar & spelling. Also using GrammarLand and books by Ruth Heller & Brian Cleary to reinforce grammar principles.

Reading: Lots of good books - both read alouds & independent reading.

History: SOTW 2

Science: Adventures with Atoms & Molecules

Math: MEP 3

Hebrew: Piecing together Biblical Hebrew curriculum from a variety of online sources and the book of Ruth.

- hoping to add in some art & music studies in the CM style -

- also planning on picking up some critical thinking / logic puzzle books -

I think that pretty much takes care of it. But anything can change in the next 5-6 months.

Heather, I see you are doing the veritas press readers for third grade. This will be my first year with veritas, normally I have used the sonlight readers. This year the sonlight readers if ordered separately don't come with a schedule, so I decided I'd try something different. I was wondering which books you are doing. Also I found a lot of free audio for these books, I can pass along what I've found. Its good too know someone else is doing the same things. I usually feel alone in all that I do.

My rising third grader who will be doing SM 4A and 4B is very "outside the norm" on the upside of the curve. I have another child who is "outside the norm" on the downside of the curve in some areas so I understand that, as well.

Allrighty!

DD turned 8 in April :)

We started a lot of new things in January, so we're sort of in between/finishing things, and we school relaxedly year round.

So, finishing R&S English 2 - moving on to 3

We might be done PL, or have a bit to finish off, moving to LCI

Math - please, please let us be done with Alpha! (Don't feel bad with math progress ladies! LOL!) We are pretty relaxed with math and didn't get started at all until grade 1 :). Two moves, a baby, a terribly relaxed schedule etc. etc. I can't wait to get to Beta! Hoping Alpha will be done this year! Yes, I am feeling a bit desperate here!

AAS - finishing 2, starting up 3

SL 1+2 (B+C) with SL 2 Int (newly named 3) readers

NOEO Chem 1 (already in progress) - if we finish this, we'll start another NOEO, just not sure which one yet

Daily NIrV readings with discussion

And family devotions

And on Shabbat we're going to start MP's Christian Studies I - maybe today!

I'd like to get back to doing Artistic Pursuits, I'm not sure how realistic that is though. I also have plans to start some composer study in place - finally bought Story of the Orchestra!

Memory work - we're just doing this by subject mainly. The prayers in PL, the books of the Bible song (again), and we're memorizing the book of Philippians this year - http://thy-word-have-i-hid.blogspot.com/ Up to 1:6 so far, just started this together. Math facts...of course. Canadian provinces/territories - hope to have this done soon - within the next month or so. I'd like to add some poetry back in, but we'll see.

We're also doing some notebooking in different subjects, we normally do some lapbooks, lots of different audiobooks, copywork, narrations (written and oral), bedtime reading from all kinds of sources

This seems like a lot, but it is actually pretty relaxed, we don't do history or science every day, and only go 4 days/week.
