  1. Also glad to see this thread. My son got a 31 on his English and a umm....3 + 3 = 6 on the writing also. This is a kid who can write. He is also a kid who got a perfect score on the CC assessment. (They said he could come in and CLEP it right away for the whole first semester or take honors writing). Now, I know they aren't the same thing, but still....t was baffling. Anyway, we need to re-take cuz the math was not so great...ugh!!! :)
  2. My son has just started Skrafty and is really enjoying it. He hasn't had any trouble with bullying either. He's loving it!!!
  3. I have taught WriteShop in co-op. This is my third year. I had 4th-8th and 5th-9th the first year. This year, it's in a different co-op, but they are ages 9-12. I think grade 3-6. It works really well at all levels. I am going to continue next year with a new one for 4th-6th and a "boot camp" type one for 7th-9th. I really, really enjoy it. It's very flexible and very easy to teach, grade, etc. There is a variety of assignments and you can skip ones also. I like the Skill Builder part as well - it teaches the grammar skills that will be used in the essays. There is a lot of descriptive writing, narrative, report, and then your regular higher level writing in WS II.
  4. Butting in here a little. I am also having some of the same quandries! My youngest in 6th now has some trouble with LA. We have always used CLE which I love. But, I switched him out since it was obviously too much of a struggle. So, this year we have been doing EG 6, R&S Spelling, EIW and he takes a WriteShop co-op class that I teach. The EG has not gone well - honestly, I just think he doesn't 'get' grammar...which is totally fine and I imagine it will click at some point. I also dropped CLE Reading with him...same reasons. So...I just ordered and received LLATL tan. It looks OK. Nothing spectacular...I suspected I wouldn't love it but thought I would try it with him to get in some grammar in a different way and more literature. Last time I looked at ELTL there were only 3 levels out. I am happy to see more and it looks really awesome to me. I like the samples much better than I like the look of LLATL. I guess my question is to someone who has used it: is there built in review or does it only do nouns the one place I see them (early on)? Or, is the review inherent cuz I do see diagramming (yea!)?? Also, as somewhat 'easier' as LLATL seems and I know this is a typical criticism - but isn't always the case, ELTL definitely does not seem to be that. It seems more advanced. The level 4 stuff was pretty tough from what I saw. So, even though i was looking for 6th or 7th work - the 5th level would probably be where he would be?? Does that makes sense?? Also, how teacher dependent is it - not sure I care either way - just curious! Appreciate any feedback anyone has. Thanks so much!
  5. Biology 101 DVD's??? Thinking about getting this for my guy....
  6. Following too - I have been trying to find the exact same thing for the past week. Not having any luck. I would actually like to sync between my android, pc and Kindle fire. Using Google calendar on PC - Calengoo on Kindle and mobile (pd for this). But, want a notes type thing to sync all together also - for lists, sermon notes etc. I tried cozi too and didn't like it. Think I am going to have to just deal with calendar and then something like wunderlist which works on all devices. I have evernote too, but I don't know - it's just not nice looking and I really don't quite get it!!!
  7. No, not teacher intensive for I and 2. Yes, Jr. looks like a lot of work. The main one has a small learning curve but after that it's all the same. I find it pretty independent...especially in the 2nd half.
  8. We love our Kindles. I have a Fire HD and so do my boys (to share). My youngest listens to Odyssey on it all the time. I decided I wanted a Paperwhite once I began reading all the time...better for at baseball games and much better at night. I love it!!! I prefer the Kindle for their literature cuz they can't lose the book (had a lot of trouble with this), can't damage a library book or pay fines for them when they don't make it back in time (had even more trouble with this) and they will be available for subsequent children when they get there. My older two actually read on their laptop's though. I have had to "lock" them down with more protection than I thought...the fire's. Ugh!!! But, since then it's been fine!
  9. Forgot to add that the worksheets are really great at helping them get started with ideas and what to include. And, the best part is that I would say all but one of my students has come to really, really like/maybe even love writing. They don't dread or hate it - and I think they all did initially!! I had 5th-9th graders this year...was easily able to adapt it - the basic WriteShop i and II to the different ages.
  10. I have taught WS in a co-op for two years. Mostly just friends kids and two of mine. I am going to teach 2 classes next year in a different co-op for a small income to help supplement. Anyway, I really, really love it. We didn't quite make it through the whole program, but I found it very easy to teach and very do-able for the kiddos. I had to take it slower than most would at home because of other activities/work loads for the other families. I would definitely agree with Elsie in her description. It guides the student and teacher with awesome checklists...although I have tweeked the teacher one a bit and will do so more next year. There was also a nice mix of report type writing where research was necessary and creative writing. They stress adding great description and have the basic same IEW type dress-up's...called sentence variations. I actually have enjoyed the character building I have seen through the two years with the kids I have had. They had to read/present their papers at various edits, they have had to learn to check the boxes/requirements when they don't want to...having to conform a bit. And, yet they have gotten to be creative. It's been awesome!!!
  11. Sounds like CLE - Christian Light Education. Meets all your criteria.
  12. I am almost positive this is what they told me. I just asked my son - that's what I read to you, right?? (Cuz I have pretty much no brain left). He said that's what I said!!
  13. I would say yes, which gives me the ability to face tomorrow!! :) I have 16, 14 and 11 year old boys. The 16 year old wasn't too bad - naturally bright, but he wasn't real enjoyable around 11 or 13/14. The 14 year old has had a rough year, but puberty is hitting him all at once and later than the oldest. The 11 year old is about to make me totally insane with the lack of focus. I think they were all the worse around 11. And, then late 13/14. It does get better. My 16 year old is running three 'businesses/job' and a very solid, mature young man. Middle one is a very hard worker and also trying to build things for profit. Both more focused and getting school done - minus some weeping and gnashing along the way this year. I totally agree with the exercise thing for sure!! These guys need to either work or exercise. I had to put my foot down with the oldest - he is a computer guru for the most part and he HAS to run almost 4 miles at least twice a week = I am still working on the third day. Other two are on baseball teams - usually two at a time, but at least one. They are also always helping with house projects, etc. It does get better...remember to use the B doesn't happen until A happens. They also like to eat - a LOT...so this is a helpful thing for motivation too - probably a wrong thing to use for motivation, but I'm outnumbered - so I have to do what I can!!!! :)
  14. I can't find the email!! But, I am pretty sure they said - probably not by the start of the school year, but into it some. I was guessing Sept...hoping - thinking maybe I could wait. We need it for SAT/ACT testing too. They said that they were focused on getting TT online - not on CD's. So, that's why the 'delay' in getting pre-calc to the 2.0 edition.
  15. I emailed TT with the same question a little bit ago and they said it might be out for next year, but not at the beginning of the year...like maybe Sept? She asks hopefully....I need it too!!!!
  16. My current 10th grade ds did this: Bible - Thinking Like a Christian with DVD's, PAC's Inner Man and Bible NT with brothers History & English - Notgrass American with two PP guides - Uncle Tom's Cabin and To Kill a Mockingbird, plus CLE English II Math - Algebra 2 c/ TT Science - Bio at co-op with Science Shepherd - already did Chem and Physics Electives: Health, and not a lot else cuz he was very elective heavy already. See work schedule... He will have 19 credits at the end of this year and we are heading to CLEP/AP/DE for the next two years and some at home. Once I figure out what to do which way....ugh!!!! Extras - Works as Social Media and Website Administrator (got certification that will be 1/2 credit also) for Health care co...started own IT company and doing well. And, teaches guitar lessons to several students. He also does a lot of film making and editing - mostly for free for church/youth group. So, he's been busy with work stuff this year.
  17. Wow - thanks so much for this. I just checked it out and it looks awesome!! I have been wanting my guys to take this for AP or CLEP to not have to take in college. This looks like a great option in addition to the SL course. :) Thanks again!!!
  18. I read that you can find the Sonlight book (Myers) many other places for much cheaper. When I did a search, I found it on Amazon for around $25.00-$30.00. You don't need to pay the almost $300.00 total. I was thinking of getting the book and the study guides. Might be an earlier edition, but I doubt there is much difference...would need to investigate that further. We are looking at doing the AP Psych exam - or CLEP...
  19. Only replying to commiserate! I am having the same dilemmas - although i add in trying to decide between at home vs. DE vs. AP vs. CLEP...weighing the cost, what "looks good", and what will be best for son who is also running his own businesses! I won't do an online one that IS more than our CC and/or any AP and CLEP options. So, hoping to hear lots of wisdom. :0)
  20. There's a new program out called Dew Learning. I checked it out briefly - it looks very good. High School will be ready shortly it said. You might need to piece subjects together separately also. Like TT for math, maybe the Bio/Chem 101 videos, there is several possibilities for English....just a thought!!
  21. I ordered MUS for a Geometry review for my son...it was super easy looking - no offense to MUS lovers...we have used it as supplement and for review. He used TT Geo - version 1 and I didn't think it was light at all. The proofs were tough. I have version 2.0 for my 2nd ds for next year. You could try Thinkwell? Or, maybe TT with LOF or something like that - a combo?
