  1. Older dd received AA from CC & WA state diploma simultaneously. She enrolled at UW as a junior at age 18 but opted to double major, add a minor and study abroad. Looking down the road at master's programs currently as she's finishing up senior year. She's in no hurry to leave academia, it would appear. ? Dd15 is full-time CC and working toward pre-Nursing AA. She will hopefully receive direct-admit to dream BSN program. If not, she'll apply as freshman to many nursing schools and see what happens. She's pursuing BSN and eventually DNP so she's in no hurry as well. I'm only familiar with the way WA and OR handle CC credits. I do know that east coast schools were not impressed with CC credits a few years ago when older dd was applying. They told us they preferred IB and AP. Hope that helps ?
  2. What a hoot to find this 'old' thread on top today. I'm convinced the combo of pre alg methods helped dd adequately prepare for her current algebra 1 class this year at her public school. She enjoys helping the students at her table and considers it her favorite class. I wish she had more practice problems to work on at home -- so I recently registered her for Alcumus. I almost have her talked in to working through some of aops intro to alg. Her teacher emailed me this week: "Abi is typically the student who jumps right into the problems and completes them before the rest of the class!" Thanks for reviving this thread. I love reading how everyone is doing these days. :)
  3. X-post from other college thread... It's been a while since I was active on the boards, which were a huge blessing to me when I took the homeschooling plunge 8 years ago. I read TWTM and felt compelled to give my dc a better education than they were receiving at private school. I could not have navigated this process without the veteran homeschool parents here and SWB's wisdom and practical advice. I was in way over my head. I depended on the ladies here for daily/weekly help and encouragement. I did not imagine the impact that classical homeschooling would have on my kids. Latin helped launch my older dd into the world of languages. She is passionate about Spanish and French and is looking at linguistics courses. I could go on about the benefits of TWTM. It radically changed our world. I'm so thankful. It still influences my decisions with younger dds. Not sure if this will encourage a younger mom who wonders if all the planning and sacrifice is worth it. It is. You are in good hands here. In terms of college news, dd is most likely choosing UW in Seattle. We visited last week. It is truly magical. Here is her list: UW UC Irvine Honors UCSD UCSC Seattle U -- Trustee Scholarship 4 years Sarah Lawrence (Waitlisted NYU) ETA: Pepperdine

  5. Re UW admissions....Dd17 will have AA (via Running Start at Clark College). She is admitted/invited as a freshman but will hopefully register with jr. standing for winter quarter. AA didn't seem to be a problem for her application. Perhaps the OP will get good news from UW this summer.
  6. I'm so sorry that what I wrote came across as discouraging. That wasn't my intention. I was trying (albeit poorly) to illustrate that being an intense former homeschool mom is ok. (My dds are younger entering school -- not high school like your daughter.) That's a big jump from homeschooling to formal high school with multiple teachers to navigate -- and transition will take time. Ask your questions. You are paying a small fortune for that education. My older dc transitioned out of homeschooling into 9th grade private. It took time to get the hang of it. For all of us. I am curious to hear how the teacher replies to your question last night.
  7. Oldest dd opted for Running Start via CC -- taking upper level classes instead of fresh/soph level. So far, so awesome. She is an old soul so it's a perfect fit. Some of the colleges she likes prefer AP. Some don't care. I'm secretly hoping she stays in Washington. She'll have junior standing. Access to advanced courses. Upperclassmen as peers. Closer to home. HTH! (edited for clarification)
  8. Welcome to my world. Not high school related but had to chime in here... Teachers at my dds' new schools knew when I interviewed them last spring that I was a homeschool mom on a mission. They seem to appreciate my questions and welcome having parents who genuinely care. Re rubrics...As a parent new to public school/common core, I love rubrics. Very clear what teachers want and if students meet/miss the mark. HTH! (edited out tasteless, braggy sentence)
  9. Dd10 does more challenging/accelerated math at night because she wants to keep her skills up and move into algebra. Very competitive spirit. Dd11 does Common Core 6th grade math a few nights/week since she is unfamiliar with the format of the new Smarter Balanced word problems and the 'computer adaptive' nature of the testing. She is assigned 3-5 SB math quizzes per week during her Advo (homeroom) period. HTH!
  10. It's tradition. It's fun for most kids. It's used for school ID. You are not required to purchase.
  11. I said in my OP: We don't want her using the term 'global warming' as that is not accurate. The teacher gave my daughter misinformation and I have no problem telling her my opinion and how I directed dd on my end. The teacher's response in this case was very positive and we had a productive discussion. Global Forum class is meant as a jumping off point for further discussion. From my brief experience thus far, I am confident these teachers can handle disagreements with parents. I'm not concerned about offending them with my opinions. They're all young, eager and progressive. Dd is loving every moment. So glad I entered her name in the lottery last winter.... Thank you for your feedback.
  12. I respectfully disagree. Teachers can/do make mistakes. Thankfully the teachers at this particular school seem very progressive and open to dialogue with parents and students. Thank you for your feedback.
  13. Just received the sweetest phone call from this teacher, thanking me for taking such a strong interest in this GF class. She wishes all GF students and parents discussed these current events together -- and that we are doing 'everything right' in her opinion. She wants to 'spark the engagement' so students will research on their own to dig deeper as their interest leads and then elaborate on these topics in weekly writing assignments. 'The class is a launching pad for further discussion outside of class -- with no specific agenda.' The purpose of the class is to 'teach the CC power standards' that she and the principal selected together. She will post topics daily on Canvas. ETA: I'm thankful we had such a productive phone conversation. I'm glad I voiced my concerns, but I would tone it down next time. Homeschool hovering habits die hard. :) To be cont....
  14. Dd11 had a 'box and whisker' word problem in her SB prep yesterday. Even the teacher was confused. Common Core math will usher us into the brave new world, or so 'they' say...
  15. Gang, Curious as to your experience thus far with SB testing prep. Favorite links/websites to help understand CC and the new testing? Dd 11 will take SB in spring. How important is this test? Where does The Hive stand on this topic? I've been out of the loop for a bit. Color me clueless.... Thanks in advance!
  16. Hi gang, DD has Global Forum class 3x/wk and loves it. Do you think I'm asking too much to get a list of discussion topics? Yes, dd tells us after school but I'd rather get specifics from teacher directly. Thoughts??? Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Miss___, Do you have a list of topics that you will be discussing in Global Forum? If it isn't too much work, we would like a list of the topics and details you discussed and/or plan to discuss each class period. A came home last week with some 'facts' about the student protests in Colorado that we disagree with. She had a simplistic view of the situation based on the brief classroom discussion. It is my opinion that the local teacher union in Jefferson County used the student protesters as pawns in the midst of their teacher contract/pay negotiations. The teachers planned a 'sick out' so students could protest, thus making national news. We corrected her that it is not as simple as 'the school board only wants the students to study good history of the country and not the bad history'. (A's words) I'm not exactly sure what was said in your classroom discussion, so forgive me if I'm getting an incomplete summary from A. We watched this: http://video.foxnews.com/v/3812223728001/review-of-ap-history-curriculum-in-colorado-sparks-protests-/?playlist_id=2694949841001#sp=show-clips and read this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelhumphrey/2014/09/25/colorado-student-protests-and-the-clanging-internet/ The issue of how history and current events are presented in the classroom via state curriculum and/or Common Core is a polarizing topic because people interpret those historical events differently. This video summarizes how my husband and I plan to teach our kids. The good, bad & ugly of US history. http://www.dineshdsouza.com/movies/america/ Re climate change and how it affects the California drought, she seemed to come away from your conversation today that 'global warming' is better to use than 'climate change' because warming is 'more exciting'. We don't want her using the term 'global warming' as that is not accurate. She will be using 'climate change' in her article. http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterferrara/2013/05/26/to-the-horror-of-global-warming-alarmists-global-cooling-is-here/ We are thrilled that A is in a current events class at such a young age and that you are so eager to teach these important topics. We just want to be informed of the topics so we can discuss intelligently at home as well and perhaps offer other viewpoints to the discussion. Perhaps you note them on Canvas and I couldn't find them. A LOVES your class and we're thankful she has this opportunity. :) Thank you! Beth
  17. Thanks for the shout-out, Angie! Crewton Ramone is a legend here. Such a fabulous resource! Speaking of our blog...My girls spent hours looking through the photos yesterday. Such sweet memories of a much more simple season...
  18. Perhaps this note will help someone who would also like to gently ask their student's teacher to modify homework... Dd is grade 5. -------------------------- Mr. ____, I'd love to chat with you sometime about Aly's math. She's continuing to work on pre algebra concepts at home with me after learning fractions, decimals and percents via Singapore math while homeschooling. Is there any chance she could do just odds or evens in the daily Saxon lesson? She is doing about an hour of more advanced math at night after completing her math homework. Is there any chance you are breaking students into math groups? Perhaps a math club or competition? Thank you! Beth ---------------------------------- Mrs. ______, That is great information to know. Let’s begin with shortening her assignments for me to just the odd numbered problems. As for math groups and competitions, we will be differentiating more with time, especially for the students in class who would like a greater challenge. I am not ready to do that yet, but things are on the way. On most Fridays, instead of a lesson we will have Math Centers, in which students will have different activities around the room they will be working on. This will most likely begin in a week or two and is great for challenging students like Aly who are ready to go deeper.
  19. Dd11 is exhausted after long school days (9AM - 4PM) so we're taking a break from tennis until I see she can handle this new schedule and 2-3 hours of homework/night. I'm encouraging her to drink lots of water during the day, eat a healthy lunch, get 10 hours of sleep per night. Thankfully she loves her new teachers and classes and is eager to dive in to homework thus far.
  20. Into my 3rd day of homeschool retirement... So far, lots of driving hither and yon to different schools, long walks, lunches with dh. No complaints. :) Will supplement dd10's math with HoE and algebra activities...
  21. My dds are from China as well. They meet with an online tutor 3x week through Cybershala.com which uses Singapore Math. They've had the same tutor, Rachna, for over 2 years. She is fabulous!!
  22. Some fun ideas... Dragonbox Education Unboxed
  23. Thank you both for the scoop! Planning to purchase this for dd9. :)
