Not sure where else to post this - question on board policy

Hi, I just registered so I could sell some homeschooling materials, and found that I have to have 50 posts before I can do this.

My youngest graduated in 2009, and is in her sophomore year of college. I finally got around to gathering up all of our stuff that I still have so that I can sell it.

I'm retied from 11 years of homeschooling, so posting on the boards is not something I'm needing to do.

Any chance of re-visiting this policy??

You can gt 50 posts reeeeeeaaly quickly. You'd be surprised.

The general board isn't about homeschooling as much as the general things in life....from homeschooler's perspectives.

If you search around this board you may find that you have a lot in common with us after all.

I remember flipping the board...that sounds a little, uh, off-color somehow.

Hey, I just wanted to say that some of us have some nostalgia-envy (I just made up that term...).

I WISH I had been around to flip the boards! Sounds so cool when I read you guys talking about those old times. I just can't visualize it...since this is all I know.

Can someone describe it in a visual way for me?!

Oh, and where did the OP go...she could truly get her posts on this one thread!

Oh well...that's all I've got.

*I noticed another poster being nostalgic seems to have joined after me. All I can say, is I joined after originally reading the book, but didn't look around at first. I was too overwhelmed with what I was doing...but that's another thread! I came back sometime later, and lurked. It is only recently that I have started trying to come out of my shell. So...just in case my join date makes someone think, "Wait, she's crazy...she was here!"*

From the board policy page. (Bolding is mine).

Sale/Swap Board

In an effort to make your Sale & Swap purchases safer, we have instituted a 50 Post Minimum policy. We want people who post items for sale to have a track record in our community. Although you may have been active on our "old" board, we cannot move posts for the old board to the new board. Please don't ask if you can be an exception to the new rules. Everyone starts fresh here. Registered users with fewer than 50 posts will still be able to respond to a FS thread and will be able to post in the WTB forum.

But the board would sometimes get hit by spam or even porn. So we would want a fresh, clean board. The board would start over automatically after so-many posts. (I forget how many.)

So when we were trying to flip it, it might look like this: (You'd have to click each one of those titles to open them up. NT meant no text.)

OK, time to flip the board. nt Colleen.

---I'll help. nt Cindyg

---Me too. nt Audrey

---I'm in. nt Bits

How about a song? nt Charlene

---I've been working on the railroad. nt Crunchy Mountain Mama

---All the live long day. nt Quiverof8

---I've been working on the railroad. nt Di

---Just to pass the time of day. nt Ellie

You guys are off key. nt Classical Michelle

...and so forth. Sometimes we needed hundreds of posts to flip the board. We just kept typing nonsense.

Then, whoever finally clicked and got the fresh new board would post...

First! nt Cindyg

Then about the next three people would post...

First! nt Lisa in TX

---Dang! nt Lisa in TX

It was great fun.

This reminds me of when we used to try to get the old board to flip. Anybody remember that?

yes, I remember that! Several times I got to be first due to my insomnia! BTW, I still have insomnia! I am trying to get my 50...I like to read everyone else's post more than writing my own!:001_smile:

There are plenty of places to sell used curriculum. The sale boards here are simply a curtesy for members of the board. Don't look at it as a for sale board where you have to have 50 posts, but rather, a hs message board that happens to also have a for Sale board for members to utilize.

Frankly, most of us have learned to be skeptical of people who are only here to sell stuff. Nothing against you personally, it's just that we have been around the block a time or two with trolls and scammers. With a really low post count some people won't buy from you anyway.

I, otoh, am here way.to.much(it takes years of dedication to become a professor) and I have no idea how I am going to keep my count below lovedtodeath since she is leaving us!

OVER 10,000 posts...........I bow to you Professor! :D

I got a real "first!" once. I considered it quite a coup!

I actually think you should have to have 100 posts to sell here. This isn't a sales forum. It's a community forum. There are always these "I have to have 50 posts" threads and then you never, never hear from these people again. It makes it seem like we're just getting used. KWIM? There are TONS and TONS of places to sell if all you want to do is sell. A PP was right... the sale/swap board is a courtesy for members. And Cadam couldn't have been more right when she mentioned the history of trolls and spammers. What. A. Pain!

Thanks for helping me "see" what the boards were like. Were there all the separate categories, for general, k-8, high school, etc? Or, was it just one long running chat?

Still wishing I had been here...

I'm competitive...I would have been sitting up trying to be a flipper, LOL!

Here, try this: Way Back Machine

I hope you are able to open it. The archives seem to be stuck tonight.

Thanks! Since I'm so used to this version, that one just seemed so...confusing! It wouldn't let me click on the entries, but I could see the whole list of them. So, if you responded to someone, did it just appear at the top of the pile and not necessarily with the original post? (Did that question make sense?) It just seems like it would have been hard to follow a conversation.

You would specifically reply to that post so it would show up under what you replied to but the posts didn't change order when a reply was added. I would just find where I had left off the day before and then run through them quickly to make a tab for each post I wanted to read before diving in. Also, because all subject lines were visible, we didn't have to open short replies. Quick back and forth conversations just took place in the subject lines.

Ahhh....I love this new board, but it was fun to flip the old one. The accelerated learner board moved slower and often was getting hit with porn spam so we worked to flip it a lot...

I don't think I was ever first...

Oh and btw.....I'm approaching 4000 posts!

I clicked on this link, saw the sweet old board, and then couldn't get back to this board. (Apparently it was down for about 12 hours.) It was like I went back in a time machine and couldn't get back to the future! LOL!!

:iagree:

I went to peek at what the old board was all about, and then could not get back on this board. I wasn't sure if I was being punished...

Believe us when we say it does NOT take long to accrue 50. Remember you can "reply" to another's original post and that's one. You can reply with an icon (smiley, etc), one word or many words.

Hang in there! We are would loooove to see your fs list. :tongue_smilie:

Sounds like you have a great perspective for commenting on the high school or college board. Or even the K8 curriculum board, especially on threads regarding items that you can look back on with satisfaction.

Face it ladies, I'm older and have better insurance...oh wait! That was Fried Green Tomatoes...I meant to say, 'Face it ladies she ain't coming back.'

I think the 50 post rule is excellent, and if it were up to me, I'd probably bump it up to 100 or more. It's a good way to keep the riff-raff off of the For Sale boards! (And if the OP comes back, I hope she realizes I'm speaking in generalizations and not about her. Actually, I love reading posts written by people who homeschooled for many years, as they often help me to avoid making stupid decisions and dopey mistakes!)

I love new posters who post and introduce themselves. I love hearing about their kids and how long they've been homeschooling and what they are using. I love hearing about their pets or lifestyle. Posts simply to get the required 50 posts? Not my cuppa tea.

Right there with ya, Jean.
