hornblower
Weird. I didn't find these creepy at all. Some of the titles are just a bit funny - if you're a grade 4 boy. Babette Cole is wonderful & hair in weird places is just reality. The book "I wish daddy drink so much" - well, there's nothing creepy about the book. It's heartbreaking. And the comments promoting escapism instead? Oh yeah, that's SO mature. The poop book - what? Again gr. 4 stuff. (I have some wonderful poop books done by a Japanese author - they're great!) The sperm book - oooooooh! Teeheee!!!! That's so GROSS!!!!! Good grief. You know what is creepy? Mary Poppins & how she always lies to the kids after their outings & denies things happened. I find Where the Wild Things Are creepy. These - not at all, though the cojoined twins one was the most unusual but probably someone, somewhere has kids who are cojoined and can't be separated and is happy that there is a book about them. Charles Wallace
The Creepiest Children's Books Ever Tara We've read the conjoined twins one! My dd, who's interested in twins, LOVES it. I agree, the cover is in questionable taste. My favorite is definitely The Long Journey of Mr. Poop. LOVE ME them golf pantz.

MBM
Oh, those are nothin'. The prize for creepiest children's book should go to Der Struwwelpeter, a not-so-cheery collection of German fairy tales. "Die Geschicht vom Damenlutscher" (The Story of Thumb-Sucker) immediately motivated my youngest, then six, not to suck his fingers ever again. nmoira
This is the creepiest kids' book I've read in the past year. [Keep in mind we've used Der Strewwelpeter for memory work.] Heart of a Snowman From Publishers Weekly: On Christmas Eve, a boy named Owen wonders how to keep his snowman from melting; when a mysterious vessel beams up his snowman, he grabs hold. They're taken to a factory where snowmen are confiscated and disassembled for research purposes: rabbits oversee a snowman-dissecting machine, carrot noses are eaten, scarves shredded and a polar bear picks apart snowflakes with tweezers. In the end, Owen learns “[w]hen a boy makes a snowman, he gives it a heart,†and that's why snowmen really melt. Though kids may have as much difficulty as Owen does figuring out exactly what's going on, they will grasp the bittersweet message.

Jenny in GA
About a year ago I was a guest blogger for AJC Momania, and my topic was something like "What children's books do you NOT like?" I tried to find the link, but it looks like it's not there anymore. What was weird (to me) was that I got several comments saying that was a "strange topic," and a couple people even suggested changing the topic for that day, how presumptuous! Anyway, here's what I think I wrote: Love You Forever had the potential to be a really sweet book. But completely ruins it by having a picture of the mother driving across town -- in the middle of the night -- to her grown son's house, with a ladder on the roof of her car! Then she climbs into his bedroom window, and picks him up and rocks him while he's asleep. Apparently she does this often. Uh-huh. Picture a father driving to his adult daughter's house in the middle of the night and climbing into her bedroom window. On a regular basis. Real sweet, huh? I also never liked The Socialist ... uh, I mean, The Rainbow Fish. I know everybody loved Roald Dahl, but he just creeps me out. Several people reminded me of The Giving Tree, and I agree that it's disturbing. I'm not quite sure what the author's point was supposed to be. Maybe if I knew, it would be less disturbing. Dmmetler
The single creepiest children's book I've ever read (well, I guess it's probably a YA book officially) is William Sleator's "House of Stairs", about a group of children who are the lab rats for psychological experiments. http://www.amazon.com/House-Stairs-William-Sleator/dp/0606049398/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269897128&sr=8-

tonya in sc
Love you forever, Where the wild things are, The giving tree, anything by Roald Dahl, etc. I am also willing to take on the classics: Alice in Wonderland is just creepy. So is Wizard of Oz. I didn't like those weird kinds of books as a kid, and I don't like them now. I still don't get the appeal of Unfortunate Events books, either. Fun thread! WTWTA creeped me out as a kid but my brother loved it. The book that bothered all three of my kids was Animalia by Graeme Base. They would ask me to put it away. There was a book called The Small One (about a donkey who was headed for slaughter) that bothered me when I was a kid. My mom gave it to me for my kids and it still bothered me all those years later. fairytalemama
In the Christmas section in the children's section of our library was this book last holiday season. My daughter grabbed it. I didn't notice the cover art and just saw that the title was Santa Claws. I thought it was going to be cute story about a cat that dresses up as Santa. I was SO wrong. Jenny in GA
Oh! When my oldest was about three, I got Sylvester and the Magic Pebble because it was so hailed on all the Great Books Lists. I read it for the first time as an adult, and I couldn't believe how depressing and creepy it is. I never read it to my kids. Also ... this is veering more from "creepy" to "dislike," but I always thought Horton was such a sad book when I was a kid. I never told my own kids, thinking I was just Strange and didn't want to pass my own issues along. When I read it to them, they said, "I don't like that book. It's sad," and never wanted anything to do with Horton. We just saw an ad the other day for a Horton cartoon movie, and my seven year old said, "Which we will not be watching!" Along the same lines, my husband cannot stand Dr. Seuss.

In honor of Easter, thought you all would like this picture from the book: I've read a *lot* of children's books. Perhaps one or two I didn't finish (though Lancelyn Green's Tales of Ancient Egypt is the only unfinished read aloud that comes to mind *yawn*), but Tulane is the only children's book that I loathe. I had a truly visceral reaction to it, even moreso than with the Berenstain Bears. Edited March 30, 2010 by nmoira spelling
stripe
Well, I have actually recommended the book "It hurts when I poop" on here before; it is just an issue kids deal with. Most of the books on there just look outdated, not really creepy. And they sure beat "Sex for One" and "Woof! A Gay Man's Guide to Dogs" for the adult crowd.
