Math: Singapore 2B / 3A and Miquon Green / Yellow (45-60 minutes daily)

Spelling: SWO C (finish) and D (15 min. for 3 days)

Grammar: FLL in a year (15 min. for 2 or 3 days)

Writing: Blank lined paper for copywork and learning cursive (10 min. daily)

Reading: assigned reading for 30 daily and 30 minutes of free reading

History; TruthQuest AHYS 2 and 3 with older sister (60 min. for 2 or 3 days)

Science: not decided - probably Apologia (60 min. for 2 days)

Critical Thinking: BTS 1, DooRiddles and MindBenders (15 min. for 2 days)

Music: piano lessons and Classical Kids (1 or 2 a month)

Art: undecided (once a week)

That's our plan so far. The math, LA, and critical thinking are the same as I used for my oldest last year. The rest differ simply because I combine the two girls in these areas. HTH

History: Biblioplan Med, Ren, & Ref with SOTW 2 + AG

Latin: finished Prima Latina in fall, now Minimus

Spelling: SWO finished C, now on D

Handwriting: learning cursive with RFH Transition (will use next year too)

Copywork: mostly quotes from books we read (I use StartWrite, printing)

Ds is doing this year:

First Language Lessons

Singapore 2a/b

SOTW 2

Space and Earth science lessons that I put together

I think that's mostly it for formal curriculum. He's an excellent natural speller and his writing is as good as mine, so we don't do formal spelling or handwriting; he does whatever copywork and dictation is in FLL, plus copywork from whatever chapter book we're reading once a week. I find history and science books that go along with what we're learning about for his independent reading (plus at least 25 minutes a day in free reading). We do art and Spanish with a group of other homeschoolers.

I don't consider myself strictly classical- so I don't know if it will help but:

second grade this year:

Living Books Curriculum grade two (stopped in depth study of Ancient Egypt and went to using first half of MOH vol. one with added read alouds)

FLL 2

SM 1A/1B and Rod and Staff 2

Memoria Press Copybook 3

second grade next year:

Rod and Staff grammar 2 (this child is utterly sick of FLL from having listened to older brother for two years- knows all the poems by heart, etc.)

Memoria Press Copybook 3

SM 1A/1B

continue with phonics as necessary and use emerging reader pack with schedule/questions from Heart of Dakota

History/Science/Literature/Bible, etc. with older third grade brother

HTH,

Rebecca

We're doing 2nd grade in the fall:

First Language Lessons

Right Start B (and we'll probably move into C during the year).

Getty-Dubay Handwriting

Phonics Pathways for as long as it takes (he doesn't read fluently yet)

Literature: Fairy tales, Greek myths, Egyptian tales (mostly in the form of bedtime stories)

I don't really do formal science for that age. I don't know what we will do about history, yet - we'll either keep going with SOTW (we'd be on year 3 next year), or we'll switch to a different sequence and read more about Egypt.

My son is definitely workbook-oriented, so this is what works well for us:

Explode the Code

Spelling Work-Out

Sonlight Read-aloud list and other literature I choose

First Language Lessons (I used Sonlight with dd--we thought those worksheets would NEVER END and did not understand why the emphasis on finding homonyms every day.)

Math-U-See supplemented by various math games with dh

SOTW--Definitely our favorite.

Apologia elementary science--haven't decided which one yet. (With dd I used Sonlight science and liked it well enough. I prefer Apologia's immersion-in-one-thing approach though.)

Spanish--private tutor and some supplementation with Rosetta Stone

A Reason for Handwriting

Having a great 2nd grade year here. I do short intense lesson Charlotte Mason style, use the Classical framework and use ideas form Waldorf for making our studies artistic and visual and Montessori for hands-on activities.

I've scheduled things in units this year and each day we do something different so every day is not the same but here is what we are doing/using.

Rhythmic Math Drill--we toss a ball back and forth and do addition, subtraction, multiplication or division facts. We usually do 2 rounds like 6 and 7 multiplication tables each day.

Math Exploration--We use manipulatives, stories and the Singapore Text to explore math topics. Right now we are doing a 2 step word problem each day.

Phonics--Monday and Wednesday I introduce a "new" phonogram (Spell to Write and Read). I usually have a silly sentence that demonstrates all the sounds of the phonogram with pictures. On Tuesday and Thursday we review phonograms and maybe make a chart for one of the phonograms that we did a few weeks ago.

Story--Monday is for an Aesop's Fable that uses 1 or both of this weeks phonograms in the title. Tuesday through Thursday is Story of the World 2 (we took a break for a while but are picking it up again).

Copywork--Monday and Wednesday she copies the silly sentence. The rest of the week she copies her composition from either the previous week or this week.

Form Drawing--A Waldorf idea of doing drawings that help you to focus. We only do this on Mondays and use a book by Donna Simmons of Christopherus House.

Composition--Tuesdays is when we compose a summary of the Aesop's fable told on Monday. Wednesday and Thursday she works on copying it in her own handwriting. We did illustrate a few of the earlier ones.

Singapore Math--She does 1 to 3 pages in her workbook.

Minimus--We do a bite-sized piece of Latin each day. We do a story, go over words or do a worksheet.

My Pals are Here Science--Again we do a bite-sized piece each day.

McCall-Harby Test Lessons in Reading--On Thursdays she does one story and answers the questions.

As we feel like it we do art. Generally it is in the Waldorf tradition of wet-on-wet watercolors, drawing with block crayons or playing with clay. Sometimes we do handwork. Right now she really likes needle-felting but we also have supplies for knitting and sewing.

I also have the Oak Meadow recorder books and the Bastien piano books when we feel like working on music.

At bedtime we read a variety of good books. Currently we are reading D'Aulaire biographies and Holling C. Holling's books. My youngest is really into the books about the American Girls. We try to have a variety that includes: science, math, history, silly stuff, good stuff, and fairy tales. I only read for about 30 minutes at bedtime but it is enough.

Spelling: SWO B

Handwriting: HWWT cursive book 1 (forget the name of it!)

Spanish: Rosetta Stone (she loves RS, and is far better with it than her big sis!) and Espanol Para Chicos y Grandes. Hopeful to find a Spanish class to put them in, but we're moving, so next year is a mystery for that)

Well, I just bought the Catholic Heritage Curriculum for 2nd grade. The lesson plans are all laid out. But I'll be shaping it into a Latin Centered Curriculum. So my plans are:

Latin - Latin for Children (she'll be listening in on her older brother)

Math - MCP Math

Language Arts - My First Catholic Speller; Language of God (grammar), A Reason for Writing for copywork/penmanship but if she wants to move into cursive, Writing Can Help, plus we do other copywork.

History - SOTW audio, plus other read alouds as we are so inclined. Also I have lots of American history easy readers, picture books I'm going to read chronologically

Science - co-op nature study

Geography - co-op cultural studies

Religion - Bible plus CHC religion curriculum

Art - I have a video program plus we do lots of coloring, etc on an informal basis.

She wants to try ballet next year, so if I can schedule in a little class, I'll try. She isn't clamoring for music lessons so we just listen to lots of music for now.

CLE maths 3( they love CLE and make the drills so competitive)

Rod and Staff English 2 ( have already, might as well use) or FLL2 ( have this also but they do NOT like it)

Beyond Little Hearts for his Glory

Rod and Staff phonics and reading 2 ( I already have these, so I might as well use them)

They also do French and Spanish 4 days a week(Elementary spanish and Ecoutez Parlez with a few other odds and ends)

And I just might add some extra science ( kits and fun stuff) since they love science a couple of days a week.

They also do an additional arts and music program on Fridays and do logic and geography also on Fridays.

This is the simplified version of my schedule.. I also have an "In Your Dreams " schedule which includes the above plus Apologia Astronomy and Latin and SWB's new writing program but which isn't going to happen this year .
