Nan in Mass Posted January 24, 2009 Share Posted January 24, 2009 My youngest will be officially in 9th and probably doing (still in the early planning stages): -Great books a la TWTM/TWEM mostly ancients with a French work or two and a Shakespeare and some poetry and some philosophy (probably rereading Sophie's World and something pacifist oriented) possibly using a French history book for the history part instead of Spielvogel's Western Civ in order to double up our subjects -Some sort of geography, possibly a French one or my homemade one or both -Writing Strands Expository Writing -Finish Ecce Romani 3 (doubt we'll finish this year and there is no hurry) -NEM3 -Formal geometry (for the proofs - doing geometry instead of logic - better for our family) -MODG Natural History Syllabus with various suppliments -Piano of some sort, either self-taught or with lessons -Whatever else he chooses to focus on, perhaps another language, or sailing, or computer programming, or robotics, or electronics -Probably gymnastics -Probably youth group, role playing, snowboarding, and possibly scouts All of which sounds like a lot. My son will be 11-turning-12 next year, roughly 6th grade age. Math - Florida Virtual School Geometry Science - Florida Virtual School Earth and Space Science, probably supplemented with some Thames & Kosmos kits Literature - Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings, with supplemental reading Grammar - Painless Grammar History - Houghton Mifflin's Across the Centuries as the spine, with additional readings from the Parragon Atlas of World History, various Learning Through History magazines and a book called Cathedral, Forge and Waterwheel. We'll also do our usual mix of field trips and DVDs and whatever else I can think of to go into the pot. Spanish - The Learnables Level 2, plus something for extra written work. Possibly Barron's Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way, since I have it sitting on the shelf. Art History/Appreciation - Sections from the Annotated Mona Lisa that match our historical era (middle ages and Renaissance), plus additional reading and picture study from a big history of art book. And, again, we'll do some museum field trips and projects and watch some DVDs about artists and so on. Greek/Latin/Vocabulary - Hey Andrew book 3 and Latin's Not So Tough book 3 That's it for curriculum. He'll also continue with choir and music and dance lessons. I would strongly prefer that he not, and I so wish we were on the same page. None of my boys are really head-over-heels about being homeschooled, actually. Man, that's such a bummer to write! But there ya go. I'm always envious of the people who say their older students really want to be homeschooled. My guys would prefer the social scene and "regular" life of going to school. They rarely say anything about it; they never complain about school; and they're all good students who totally enjoy so many aspects of our homeschooling (history, literature, living field trips, etc). And yet, they'd be perfectly happy to go to school, and in the case of my oldest, he kind of has this silent "Why are you keeping me a prisoner?" stance. I'm hoping to at least get him excited about the other options I'm holding out to him, such as science and perhaps math at a local homeschool "academy". He really isn't interested, since it's the public school hoopla that interests him, but I'm not ready to let a 9th grader make the call about his education based on his social desires. Anyway ~ sorry about the long intro.:tongue_smilie: Having said all that this is what I see as the ideal (for my 9th grader) if I could have my way on all counts: Vocab for Classical Roots C & D Introductory Logic Lial's Intermedia Algebra (or the text used at the homeschool academy) OSU's German online (he's already taking this) Galore Park Spanish (time permitting) Sonlight Core 100 (American History) Writing ~ something online and/or Lightning Lit high school, plus developing expository essay skills via Bravewriter's "Help for High School" Apologia Biology (or the text used at the homeschool academy) Art history via Gombrich's Story of Art & other resources His other activities include piano, guitar, and 4-H. I want to kick up his community service (e.g. Habitat for Humanity) a notch. He will also likely run cross-country in the fall and play soccer in the spring, both through the high school. Colleen Posted January 24, 2009 Share Posted January 24, 2009 I noticed your son plays lacrosse. My guys have shown some interest in trying that out ~ or rather, I've nudged them toward it. I love lacrosse (the little I know of it) and while I love soccer, too, I just think it'd be fun for them to try something different. But the other day when I picked up some info about the local league here I was floored by the cost. Egads! The season fees run twice that of soccer, and then they'd need some equipment on top of that, of course. I don't know if you can make a comparison between these two particular sports, but in general, do you find, or have you heard, that lacrosse is on the pricier end? Just wondering if this is the norm. Ds owns the equipment which includes Super-Fly gloves that the pros use. Ds bought them w/ birthday money. Cleats every year, of course. Not sure the total expense per season. Lacrosse is so fun to watch. We love it. I bet B'ham has a league. I know it has a rep of being an east coast snobby rich kid sport. We haven't seen that here. All the families are down-to-earth. That in and of itself doesn't sound like much, but we have four guys playing now, so it adds up. By comparison, the season dues (about ten games) for the 7th/8th grade lacrosse team are $125. Slightly more for the younger boys, and twice the price for the high school team. I am so interested in having them try it out, but if they should want to pursue it, it could prove pretty costly! It's really taking off in popularity, which is cool since, as you said, it's historically not been played on the West coast. I am still really undecided curriculum-wise for my rising 8th grader. He will probably do: Hewitt's Conceptual Physics Jurgensen's Geometry Henle Latin (complete book I) I'm really undecided on history/lit. He might do Core 100 over 8th/9th and add in Critical Thinking in US History (like oldest did). He might do one of the Teaching Co. series on US history. He might do some of Lightning Lit American History. He might do the IEW Essay book. He might do a course at a local tutorial center or on-line..... I'm finding it really hard to make decisions because it seems like the time when we should be thinking about his path forward -- does he pursue AP courses, if so, when? Does he do some dual enrollment like his brother did, if so, when. I'm conflicted about what is best for this particular child because he has so many varied interests that it's hard to know where to focus any electives he does. I guess I'll figure something out. Brenda Brenda, What is your high school forecast for him? I figured out what ds will do for high school history/lit and then used 8th (this year) to ramp up lit reading w/ some heavy titles -- and do a fun history overview w/ SOTW 2, 3, 4, KF, TTC lectures on World History and tons of Netflix history docs. We are currently watching/discussing The Revolution by The History Channel. I have enjoyed 8th this year. We're setting up habits that will carry over to 9th, when it really counts. :) Oh, we started Classical Writing this month. Amazing program! It reminds me of when I had three youngsters at home and had the fun/hassle of choosing curriculum each year. I especially liked seeing those that chose LLATL. I used that for all my kiddos and we loved it! Alas, my oldest is now graduated from college; middle one is in college and.....sob......my baby will be in 12th grade next year. Ok. Actually things are getting easier with dual enrollment at the CC. At home my son will do: Calculus (book to be determined; I have a number that I have taught from so I may just let him choose one) Latin (Aeneid using Bolchazy materials) French in Action My son will be in 12th, the end of the WTM cycle. He wants to take American History at the CC. Whether he does literature at home or at the CC will be determined by their schedule. Interestingly, my future history major would probably be miserable without a science class so I'm sure he'll find one of those to do at the CC as well. Sniff! I am mostly sure, but want to see how it sounds out loud (thank you)! 9th Grade Math: Modern Introductory Analysis - For sure AP Biology: Life: The science of Biology by Sadava - For sure becuase I LOVE the ancillary materials. Ancillary is not exactly the word I want to use, but you get my gist, yes? Chinese 1: CC - Mostly for sure, otherwise through the Chinese School. French V: Either through the Alliançe Française or The Potter's school, but I don't care so much about the AP test on this one, it's more for fun now. AP World History: I have so many resources for The Earth and Its Peoples, but I don't really like the text, so I'm still unsure. I also have Sources of World History for the extra readings. World Literature: I have a PH lit book as a start, but I see myself deviating from it in favor of readings that aren't in it:glare: Plus novels, of course and Word Within the Word vol. 3 Art History: I already have the gigantic version of Gardner's Art Through the Ages, so why not use it a little bit for World History, as well? Logic: TL II or I have a Critical Thinking book someone from the college gave me. I feel like I am missing something... I have no idea what. This should be MORE than enough! I figured out what ds will do for high school history/lit and then used 8th (this year) to ramp up lit reading w/ some heavy titles -- and do a fun history overview w/ SOTW 2, 3, 4, KF, TTC lectures on World History and tons of Netflix history docs. We are currently watching/discussing The Revolution by The History Channel. I have enjoyed 8th this year. We're setting up habits that will carry over to 9th, when it really counts. :) Oh, we started Classical Writing this month. Amazing program! Beth -- I'm not really sure what my high school forecast is for him yet, and that's part of my indecision. I'm just very conflicted about which courses to do at home, which to outsource, and when to start the outsourcing. Part of my problem might be that his brother's college aps are all in and now we are waiting, waiting, waiting. I think somehow, I need to see the results of my efforts with his brother in a concrete way before I decide which way to go next with the younger guy. I'm sure at some point I'll be able to pull together a plan. I'm just one that usually has plans and very early at that. Not knowing exactly where we're going is making me feel uncomfortable, but I just need to let go and trust God for now. Thanks for your suggestions! Bokons Posted January 28, 2009 Share Posted January 28, 2009 My oldest (a rising 9th grader) would strongly prefer to attend the public high school. I would strongly prefer that he not, and I so wish we were on the same page. None of my boys are really head-over-heels about being homeschooled, actually. Man, that's such a bummer to write! But there ya go. I'm always envious of the people who say their older students really want to be homeschooled. My guys would prefer the social scene and "regular" life of going to school. They rarely say anything about it; they never complain about school; and they're all good students who totally enjoy so many aspects of our homeschooling (history, literature, living field trips, etc). And yet, they'd be perfectly happy to go to school, and in the case of my oldest, he kind of has this silent "Why are you keeping me a prisoner?" stance. I'm hoping to at least get him excited about the other options I'm holding out to him, such as science and perhaps math at a local homeschool "academy". He really isn't interested, since it's the public school hoopla that interests him, but I'm not ready to let a 9th grader make the call about his education based on his social desires. Hi Colleen, My oldest went to school last year for grade 6 (Christian school), and we are homeschooling him again this year for 7th. He would not give a second thought about going back to school if he had the choice, and is frequently telling me how much more fun school is and how school is way better than homeschooling, and how he's never going to homeschool his kids. Luckily my next two are happy to stay home and have said that they don't want to go to school (for now anyways). I did have a long talk with ds12 about why I am homeschooling and why I think homeschooling is better for them right now. He seemed to understand, and actually told me afterwards that he figured out that homeschooling is not that bad now (but I know he would still prefer to go to school). I think ds really likes the social aspect of school, but I told him that we are not spending all that money so he can have fun, and dh and I don't want to send our dc to public school. Anyways, just writing to let you know I know how you feel. I wish that we had a homeschool academy here, but we are considering letting ds take one or two classes at the Christian school next year for grade 8 if we can fit them into our schedule, and I'm going to sign him up for some online classes as well, so I hope that he will be satisfied with those options. I have to do a lot of pre-reading this summer. 11th grader will do a grammar review, 9th grader will finish Rod & Staff 8 and do Vocab through Classical Roots C & D. 11th grader will do Windows on the World (IEW) in addition, for lit. analysis, even though it doesn't match the period. 1 credit: Math for the 9th grader will be Foerster's Alg. 1. For the 11th grader, pre-calculus, either Chalkdust or through the public school. 1 credit for 9th, 2 credits for 11th: Science: 9th grader will do Biology, either A Beka (with me hosting a group lab) or through a private school. 11th grader will do science through either a community college or public school. He's finished biology and chemistry and anatomy and physiology, but won't be ready for physics. I'll let him choose. He will also choose a computer programming class at the community college. 2 credits: Foreign Language: will let 11th grader choose his language at community college, 2 semesters. 1 credit: Rhetoric: for 11th grader, don't know what we'll use. Formal logic for 9th grader, don't know what we'll use. 1/2 credit:Probably a music history class for the 9th grader. 1 credit: Both: religion class My 7th grader: Foerster Alg. 1 (yes, he'll be doing the same science as my 9th grader, and probably besting him) Rod & Staff 7 Famous Men of the Middle Ages and other assorted resources for medieval and Ren history and literature informal logic Wordly Wise Vocab physics (conceptual), probably through local private school, or I'll use A Beka's Science of the Physical Creation Might try Latin... don't know.
