Light-hearted movies

Movie recommendations please. We tend to watch a lot of serious movies. Lots of foreign movies, but not exclusively. But I’m in the mood for something more light-hearted tonight. But it has to be something dh would like. Not an easy task. Here are some light-hearted movies dh and I have both enjoyed over the years:

Sister Act

Ghost

Enchanted

Hmm. Those are the only light-hearted movies that I can think of right now. Anything else like these out there?

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

My Cousin Vinny

Muriel's Wedding

Groundhog Day

Death at a Funeral- the British version is hilarious

Wrestling Ernest Hemingway

Man on the Train (French Film)

The Castle (Australian)

Strictly Ballroom (Also Aussie)

Bend It Like Beckham

Bran Nu Dae (Aussie - I happend upon it on TV)

I ** the ones that I thought might esp. be a fit for both of you...

Enola Holmes (2020) -- just dropped on Netflix; not perfect, but spunky fun
Knives Out (2019) -- very fun whodunnit; the actors look like they all had a blast
Thor Ragnarok (2017) -- Marvel superhero acrtion with a heavy helping of humor
Sing Street (2016) -- Ireland; Indy film, light fun
The Man from UNCLE (2015) -- action, intrigue, heavy dollop of humor, and a lot more creative than the usual
The Lego Movie (2014)
** Austenland (2013)
** In a World (2013)
** The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
The Muppets (2011)
Tangled (2010) -- animated; similar spunky heroine and humor as Enchanted
The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Arranged (2007)
Dan in Real Life (2007) -- quirky comedy
Lars and the Real Girl (2007) -- quirky comedy
Stranger Than Fiction (2006) -- quirky comedy
Nacho Libre (2006)
** Anchorman (2004)
** A Knight's Tale (2001)
** Miss Congeniality (2000)
** Galaxy Quest (1999)
The Fifth Element (1997)
** Groundhog Day (1993)
Enchanted April (1991)
** The Blues Brothers (1980)
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Little Shop Around the Corner (1940) -- lovely (and much better) original that "You've Got Mail" was based on

I just watched a movie on Netflix that was quite good called Carrie Pilby. Never saw any of the actors before, but it was a short, satisfying movie. Not too sappy.

Sorry, I missed the part about you watching it with your dh. I think it depends on what kind of movie your dh likes. My dh would probably not go for this one.

Thanks for all these suggestions. Keep them coming while I check them out. Some of these have jogged my memory.

I loved Princess Bride, but I dont Think my husband will.

Neither of us like Groundhogs Day.

DH does not like sports movies.

Moonstruck! He loves that one. Ine of his favorites.

I hated Ferris Buehler.

We both loved Mean Girls.

One of my sons recently mentioned Knives Out and I’ve been trying to convince dh to try it I think maybe it doesn’t have a high enough rating on rotten tomatoes for him to consider it.

But keep the suggestions coming. I’m still going through all these suggestions hoping to find the perfect Friday night flick!

It has 97% rating!! It must be some other reason he keeps rejecting it.

I think of Moonstruck as a quirky, character-driven rom-com. From my list above, these might have a feel similar to you:
- In a World (2013)
- The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
- Dan in Real Life (2007)
- Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
- Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

And possibly one of these even more quirky but positive films:
- Big Fish (2003)
- Punch Drunk Love (2002)
- Happy Accidents (2000)

Does anyone know if there's a movie or documentary about Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine? If not, there should be. Wonderful singer and performer and probably a really interesting story, though very sad she's not performing anymore. I loved her music and voice.

I just did a bit of googling and she and her husband have a musical about their lives and their music called On Your Feet. It looks amazing.

So, @Amethyst -- what did you guys end up watching, and did you enjoy it? And if it was something not mentioned by anyone, give us your review! 😄

Ugh. We started watching Knives Out. Seemed fun to me. But after half an hour my husband paused the movie. He was not enjoying it. What? Oh well. So that sort of took all the fun out of it to me. We had barely gotten through the exposition!!

Sorry it didn't work out. But, from this post and your others up-thread, frankly, it sounds like DH is the picky movie watcher, not you!! That's rough! We have been at that place with adult DS#2 for the last half dozen years -- he is so limited in what he's willing to watch anymore in those rare moments when he IS willing to watch something with the family, that it's virtually impossible to find something he'll agree to...🙄 🤨😤

BEST of luck with finding something that works for both of you. Maybe a TV series that is streaming on Netflix or other service?? Warmest regards, Lori D.

I missed the party, but here are my suggestions:

IQ
Corina, Corina
Auntie Mame
Seabiscuit (yes, it's a horse movie, but it was surprisingly good)
The Wedding Planner
You've Got Mail (which can also be a Christmas movie) (I don't have many requirements to be a Christmas movie, lol)

Also, I always have to watch the Jumanji movies in order. 🙂 Also, the last one, which I enjoyed a little less than the first two, had a little discussion about male body parts that I thought was, um, awkward. o_0 All three are Christmas movies (as I said, I don't have many requirements for it to be a Christmas movie).
