My foreign film watching is limited to Danish films these days.  Here are few I like that have not yet been mentioned:

Festen (The Celebration)

Flammen & Citronen (Flame and Citron)  If I could only pick one to add to the list, this would be the one.

Marie Krøyer

En Kongelig Affære ( A Royal Affair)

The Monastery:  Mr. Vig and the Nun (documentary, partially in English)

Veer- Zaara! How could no one have mentioned that? (Bollywood)

Ooo, I'll have to look for it on amazon!  I've watched Vivah twice now and really liked it.  If you want to swirl your brain a bit, watch that back to back with Bride & Prejudice.

one of our favourite films of all time is from new zealand - Second Hand Wedding.

and we agree with the "shall we dance" from japan with subtitles suggestion - it was my father-in-law's favourite movie.

we don't consider canadian films "foreign", but "a nest of singing birds" is one that stuck with me....

have fun!

Seconding the following--

Russian Ark--this is amazing, because the ENTIRE film was shot in one take. ONE. Think about that.

Blue--One of the Trois Coleur trilogy. You really should see all 3.

Wings of Desire--about angels, some of whom become human. You will never guess who's in it--ok I'll telll you--PETER FALK (Columbo, remember?) He's PERFECT in it.

Mine:

France: Veronique --about a doppleganger

              400 Blows--coming of age

Russia: The Sacrifice--killer ending, a little sloggy. Apocalyptic in a unique way

Palestine: 5 Broken Cameras

Israel and Palestine: The Other Son (about 2 men, one Israeli Jew and one Muslim Palestinian who were mistakenly switched at birth)

Second the recommendation for Veer-Zaara.  If you've never tried a Bollywood film, it's a great beginning.  It's on Netflix too. :)

Also…basically anything with Shar Rukh Khan in it. :)  "We Are Family" was good.  "Kahaani" was good, but not a typical Bollywood film.  Barfi! was a good film as well.

France:

Jean de Flourette and Manon des Sources

Amelie

400 Blows

The Artist

Au Revoir Les Enfants

Persepolis (may count as Iranian too…great graphic novel)

Jules et Jim

The Dinner Game

Romantics Anonymous

Italy:

Life is Beautiful

Cinema Paradiso

Two Women

Germany

Das Boot

I love the Marianne Sagebrecht films

Anything by Wim Wenders

Saw a German film called "The Hairdresser" on Netflix recently which was good

The Lives of Others

Mostly Martha

Chinese (mainland, Taiwan, etc.):

The Wedding Banquet

Eat Drink Man Woman

Raise the Red Lantern

Japan:

Shall We Dance

Tampopo

Whisper of the Heart

Vietnam:

Scent of Green Papaya

Sweden:

My Life as a Dog

Denmark:

Babette's Feast

Mexico:

Like Water for Chocolate

Spain:

Anything by Almodovar, but especially "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" :)

Lebanon:

Caramel

Yes. Everybody watch The Castle, and don't watch Muriel's Wedding. I am ashamed to come from the culture that produced that movie. Can you believe they made us watch it in school? :svengo:

Oh, I'd forgotten about The Castle.  It is a lovely movie.  I enjoyed Muriel's Wedding, but for school kids??  Um.. no.

Don't worry .....American's have plenty of movies to be ashamed of.  ;)

Solaris (Russian version of the Polish science fiction story)

Let the Right In * (Swedish horror about 1st love)

The 400 Blows (French, coming of age)

Rashomon * (Japanese, 3 completely different POV of a crime)

Chronos (Mexican, what if you could live forever?)

Le Fee (The Fairy, French, wild physical comedy, very little dialogue)

The City of Lost Children (French, surreal dystopia)

The Professional (French, a hit man adopts an endangered girl)

Spirited Away/Ponyo/My Neighbor Totoro * (Japanese animation)

Nosferatu (German, silent Dracula movie)

Mostly Martha * (German, sweet movie about an uptight chef who must care for her sister's daughter and deal with change in her kitchen)

Elling * (Norwegian, hilarious story of 2 mentally ill men being brought back into society)

The King of Masks * (Chinese, really sweet movie about an old man looking to adopt a boy to teach his street craft)

Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese/Hong Kong, totally surreal kung fu movie)

I starred my favorites. My apologies if I overlapped. I like many of the others mentioned but I didn't remember these being out there.

Three off the top of my head that I watched on Netflix.

Mother of Mine(this is sad)

South African

The Silent Army(also very sad)

French

The Well Digger's Daughter(there may be an inappropriate scene in this one but I think it was brief.)

I adore the movie Strictly Ballroom.  I didn't appreciate it's awesomeness at first, but after viewing it again, I fell in love.  It's weird and quirky (like some Aussies I know ;) ), and absolutely fun.  I don't even know how many times I've seen it.

Most of mine are British movies, but there are a few others.  Here are some I like:

Joyeux Noel

Bride and Prejudice (Bollywood)

A Royal Affair

On a Clear Day

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Billy Elliot (This movie is fantastic!)

The Red Violin (This movie blew me away! Hands down my favorite movie ever)

Calendar Girls (the 2003 movie, based on a true story)

Enchanted April

Waking Ned Divine

The Full Monty (NOT FOR KIDS!)

Shawn of the Dead (NOT FOR KIDS!)

Hott Fuzz (NOT FOR KIDS!)

Lost in Austen

another plug for The Intouchables. That is the best movie ever.

Seconding the movie Waking Ned Divine.

Okay, not exactly a foreign movie because it's US, but it has foreign actors and takes place in various cities around the world. Night on Earth

Neuf Mois is much funnier than the US version, I think.
