texasmama
I think the state should have much more say in how people homeschool because people might not be doing a good job. Not you, though. I'm sure you are doing great.
mom2bee
That's all good and fine for you but I would really rather that MY kids experiment and be exposed to drugs, peer pressure, sexual promiscuity, tobacco and alcohol while they are still in their formative years where I can guide them through it rather than wait until they are off at college. After all, isn't that a part of growing up? (Yeah, someone actually said something very close to this to my parents in front of me when I was like 13 years old.) AMJ
How will your kids ever learn to fill out bubble sheets? How will they learn the important life skills, like accepting unquestioningly what their bosses tell them, if they don't attend classes where they have to learn what is in the textbook no matter what it says? How will they learn important social skills, like only talking to people from a narrow age group? Students need enforced pairing on group assignments to teach them how to work with others. AMJ
Don't you lose your sanity being cooped up in your house all the time with your kids? They will miss out on field trips, where they learn to stand in long lines, be shepherded past exhibits where they can't get close enough to hear the guide's explanation (which they are tested on later), and eat flattened lunches dredged from the cooler after marinating in someone's spilled drink. Your girls won't learn how to handle embarrassment when puberty's more noticable effects start suddenly during the school day. How will your kids learn to be accountable if they never face pop quizzes? You have no hope of catching your kids when they plagiarize. That takes experienced teachers to spot! (My niece's English teacher just accused my niece, and much of the class, of plagiarizing their papers. She Google a few words from each kid's paper, and if she found anywhere a sentence that matched their opening sentences she took it as proof that they plagiarism the whole paper.) eternalsummer
Do your kids know how to write their name? Do they know their name? I just realized that they probably write their names about 1/20 as often as public school kids, due to lack of worksheets and the fact that I'm not going to get their work mixed up with anyone else's.
