I am legally blind, so rely on others for transport. Until now my grandma and a friend at church were able to help with daytime things while DH is at work, but with baby number 3 on the way I was preparing to be completely trapped at home during work hours.

I just found out our completely impractical twice a day local bus, catered to city workers and of no use to me unless I am prepared to be trapped in town/at the shop for 7 hours is being completely overhauled, and as of next month will run hourly in both directions from 6am to 6pm!

I can go to the library, get in swimming lessons, go to playgroup and kids events, maybe join the local homeschool group, grocery shop without wasting an evening, even get to the hospital for appointments without relying on someone setting aside their day for it.

I cant even describe how excited and relieved I am. This has come at the best time.

I am off to look into swim lessons and library events

Oh that is so freeing! My sister is also legally blind and cannot drive so I understand what a wonderful opportunity this is for you. Plus, right now, my family and I aren't able to drive in the country we are in, and it is maddening not to be able to run to the store to pick up some milk or decide to spend a quiet afternoon at the bookstore and just go without calling anyone to take us. My husband and I actually mourned our loss of independence when we moved here. People do not understand how important it is for everyone to be able to have transport in order to meet their basic and (and frivolous) needs. If they did public transport would be greatly expanded.

I am also unable to drive (large central blind spots) and living in Europe has completely changed me life.  Metro, trains, bus...  I can get to my dd's orthopedic specialist, which is literally on the other side of the country, with no problems and be back again by evening.  So freeing.  I'm so happy for you!  When we are visiting the US, I'm completely at the mercy of DH, friends, and family.

Great news.  I can drive but my 26 year old son is impaired and will never drive.  Something like this would be SOOOO freeing for him as he does very well in the community but has to depend on us for transportation as we are 12 miles outside of town.

You might also ask about a monthly pass or disability pass.  I know in our area the disability passes are 1/2 the price of regular ones.

Geez, how do you guys decide what to do, I want to do EVERYTHING.

I know being out of the house too much is a very bad idea for productivity, but so many good things... Ive never had the opportunity to choose before

:D  That's exactly how I felt when I went off to college.  I went to dozens of performances, exhibits, lectures, you name it.  And I still made time for my coursework ... eventually.

Take advantage when it's nice out, stay home when it's icky.  After the first month or two you'll be able to find the right balance for you.

I am so happy for you!

:hurray:
