Picture books every child should have - gift ideas :)

Recommended Posts

I am putting together a baby shower gift for a very good friend of ours who has really helped us out a lot. My husband wants to generously give back and asked me to select a nice, large stack of picture books rather than heading to her baby registry because books can be long lasting rather than used up in the first year or so. I am excited to put together the stack (especially given the budget he thought was a good one to use!). We have come up with a short list of our favorites. But I wanted to see what picture books you think every child should have on his shelf.

TIA

I have many thoughts on this but my current favorite to give to new babies is Here's a Little Poem.

You should also think about including a copy of The Read-Aloud Handbook.

Great idea on the poem book. We have that one on our shelf and love it. Can't wait to share it again with my baby. I was also considering adding in the The Read-Aloud Handbook.

For babies I love Peek A Who by Nina Laden and Goodnight Moon.

My 10-month old LOVES Peek-A-Who.

Both of these are on my list of possibles. They are on her registry so I am not sure I want to gift them because I think she'd buy them if she didn't get them as gifts. I'd love to stay unique as much as possible.

* Mo Willems' Knuffle Bunny books were the great revelation of our first year. My husband now names them as one of his favorite trilogies across all media. :)

* Time for Bed by Mem Fox, pictures by Jane Dyer

* Songs that are based on nursery rhymes promote singing to the kiddo, even by people who aren't naturally musical. I'm a huge fan of all the ones illustrated by Pam Adams and published by Child's Play.

* Baby Animals Black & White by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes can be used with the tiniest infants and is darling, and almost...witty, if a wordless book for babies can be such a thing

* I just stumbled across the HarperCollins Treasury of Picture Book Classics at a used book store and it has wonderful selections. It's really physically heavy, but it's a great go-to resource.

If you need some help burning up all that money, I really like "lap book" formats for this age (oversize board books), so little babies with possibly blurry vision have a shot of seeing the pictures.

Knuffle Bunny (awesome, funny, and oh-so-true-to-life!)

We loved Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson (great rhythm and delicious words)

Come Along, Daisy (or other Daisy books)

Red Hat, Blue Hat by Sandra Boynton (baby humour!)

When Moon Fell Down by Linda Smith (gorgeous and poetic)

Three favorites that I haven't seen listed yet:

Good Night Gorilla by Margaret Wise Brown

Frederick by Leo Lionni

The Nutshell Library by Maurice Sendak

I second this one!

Another wonderful mostly wordless picture book is The Night and the Dragon by Tomie dePaola. That has been one of my son's favorites for a long time.

Kohls does a "Kohls Cares" thing where they sell children's books and a matching plush for a good price and donate the proceeds to charity. Right now they have some Eric Carle books clearanced for $2.50 each and some other books for $5 (their normal Kohls Cares price which is still a good price for most kids books)

My two year old's current favorites are:

The Big Red Barn and the Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown

and

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen

Library Lion is a newer book from 2009, but he thinks it's hilarious and loves to do the lion rawrs. It's also the first "longer" book he was happy to sit through.

I just did something similar ( but smaller) for a friend. I chose:

The Read Aloud Handbook

The Story of Ferdinand (Munro Leaf)

Millions of Cats (Wanda Gag)

Bats at the Beach (Brian Lies)

These are books that my son still really enjoys at age 5 but also have repetition or rhyming to make it interesting for a little one.
