What are you buying your 8 yo Dd for Christmas?

Recommended Posts

Mine does not play with toys. She reads alot. I'm thinking of getting her an iPod if I can get one on sale. Do those things go on sale on Black Friday? I will get her a few books and set of Your Story Hour CD's. She needs some pants. I bought her some on Friday. If we can scrape by until Christmas, I'll give them to her them. It's hard because she has some from her cousin that fit her lengthwise, but she can fit two fists in the waist. She won't go nekkid without the ones I got for her, but I have a hard time holding them back for two months when she could use them now.

DD wants Julie's Bed (AG) but there is no way I'm paying $125 for it.:glare:

I'm trying to decide what to do. There is an unfinished bed on ebay that is very similar for about $47 (including shipping). I'm thinking about trying to make one myself :001_huh:, I have a couple blogs bookmarked with instructions. I could sew the bedding no problem but I'm not sure about constructing the actual bed.

We bought the girls unfinished beds at Ikea for about $15. They like those just as much as the AG ridiculously priced beds.

My sensory seeking dd8 is getting.

Something to play with: Baby Alive Baby All Gone - She gets a kick out of the interaction baby dolls. ($9 during 75% toy sale last month)

Something to share: Melissa & Doug reusable sticker pad- habitats. ($2.50 during Coop sale)

Something to wear: Footed PJ's - She wants feet in them as she says...(Probably grab them on Black Friday or find a deal online sooner)

Something to read or Something for creativity: Probably a book on reptiles and all things critters or Lego set.

Something for comfort: Monster Hooded Bath Towel - I'm sewing this.

Something from "santa": Bookcase revamped into a 4 story Dollhouse - Found lots of inspiration on pinterest! (Have bookcase already, purchasing things from thrift store to updo into barbie dollhouse items. Already purchase carpet squares for flooring.)

Then her stocking stuffed filled with realistic usable items. NO junky toys or useless items!:001_smile:

Do you have any unfinished wood shops around? Like a Mill Stores? You can buy adorable 18 inch doll beds and paint or stain them..for really good money!

We do something you want, something you need, something you wear, something you read

Want-will be something from her wish list

Need-Bigger Bike

Wear-Thinking one of those dresses that comes with the matching doll dress

Read-Usborne

I am going to adopt this!!! I am the biggest bahhh humbug for Christmas and hate just getting stuff to fill the space under the tree. (Not trying to debate Christmas at all, I just hate the commercialism of it!) This though is perfect, expecially since I am supporting my sister and her 2 kids right now on 24 hours a week. My budget just got incredibly tighter. Thanks!

D8 wants a kindle. Not sure if that will happen. She is also hoping for a ballet barre. She will likely also ask for her standard gifts - stuffed animals and books. I am getting her a pink moleskine journal for her story writing. She will also be getting dancewear (new leotard, leg warmers, sweater). I may ask grandparents to get her clothes or accessories (think Justice) and Just Dance (or something like that).

Those are the ideas that I'm tossing around.

ETA - DD plays with toys all the time. She doesn't need any more and hasn't asked for anything. But, I want the OP to know that dd's favorite thing is Calico Critters - she has the treehouse and it was worth every penny. She also likes to latch hook. A knitting kit is a good idea also. How about a sleeping bag or pillow pet? Create a theme basket?. DD loves animals and last year received an animal basket - book, stuffed animal, Zoobooks magazine subscription etc. AG is also a hit here.

This is her wish list, which will likely be covered in some way by grandparents, aunt/uncle, the parents, and siblings.

AG/18 inch doll accessories

books

footy pjs

pennsylvania dutch candies

music

scented pencils, mechanical pencils (she loves these), and/or gel pens

funky beads (for making bracelets etc)

fuzzy socks and/or slippers

roller blades

Lego stuff

American Girl doll stuff

equipment for sewing/knitting/weaving

really nice art supplies

diary with lock

clothes/fun shoes

Legos (my DD likes them too.)

dress-up clothes/fairy wings/princess crown

(I'm not sure what my 9yo DD is getting this year. I don't really have a big-ticket sort of idea for her.)

Looks like similar items but also a good little variety.

Both my dd's would LOVE an AG doll or similar. I'm doing that for birthday's this year though, since it's a bit more managable. DD6 and DD8 both expressed their want for the AG doll. However they both love littlest pet shop critters, polly pocket, barbies and craft kits.

 me too. We do three gifts, small, medium, and larger. Usually a book, a toy, and something off their want list.

Ah yes, the homemade Christmas pj's are a tradition so they're not part of the 3 gifts.

Christmas stockings traditionally have pair of socks, tooth brush, lotion, an orange, and chocolate coins, an ornament, and a small toy (cards, pet shop, etc.)

My 8 year old dd doesn't play with toys much anymore :( She's crazy into fairies and building fairy houses so she'll probably get a fairy book. She's also asking (as her big gift) for a multi tiered worm farm. What GIRL asks for that? ROFL She will probably get a wii game. In her stocking, she'll probably get a fun geometric coloring book, new colors, a new toothbrush, new socks (she loves decorative socks), bubble bath, etc.

We have mom, dad, big brother and baby sister in our family. Santa seems to get a gift for each child to share with the family. These seem to be either the same or coordinating. This is a good way to bring in things that we kind of want to get, but are not as excited about.

We also each give ONE gift to each other. This helps to keep the gifts very good. The children have a $15-$20 limit (because mom and dad pay for these too). Mom and dad normally stay under $50 for the kids, but the limit on each other is based on what our money belt is feeling like.

So... what to do for DD 8?

Ours is 8 too... she is the hardest person for me to buy for. She is the hardest for me to tell others what types of things to buy. She LOVES American Girl dolls, as well as other types of 18 inch dolls. Any accessories are always welcomed. This has been the main types of things she has received for the past 4 years. I am sure this year will be no different.

The good thing is that she does play with these dolls, not only alone, but with her friends or her brother. The bad thing, is that other than MORE clothing, there is not that much that she can be given, between space and what she has already.

Her birthday just past and one grandparent sent her money to send an American Girl Doll the the hospital. This is by FAR her favorite gift from her birthday, because on of her doll's hands were mauled by our now 2 yr old puppy. We did not put the puppy down, but is was a close call. The drive of Kentucky Fried Chicken on the dolls hands was too much.

Looking into iPod and music, seems better than a radio with open ended commercials and stations to choose from, while mom and dad are sleeping?

Eager to see what other people are suggesting for their 8 yr old.

What a timely thread: dd8's birthday is next month, and so far she says she wants a flashlight. :glare:

She loves science, and I was thinking of one of those In a Nutshell kits. Which one, though?

LOL, this is our situation exactly! DD's birthday is Saturday; she hasn't asked for anything that I apparently thought was worth remembering, because I don't remember anything. :P From me she is getting the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Last year she got a 'sweet chemistry' kit that she really enjoyed. One of my friends is apparently sending a kit where she can chip gemstones out of a rock...weirdly, right up her alley! I will be looking up the In a Nutshell kits!!!

ETA: she would looooove a kindle and I am thinking about that with the latest price drop and knowing how much she loves to read....

I don't have a clue, so I'm not helpful.

My dd8 will actually be 9 on 12/12, so I have birthday AND Christmas to figure out. She has never been into dolls, so AG is out. My DSD7, who will be 8 in January, LOVES AG stuff, but her grandmothers always get her that stuff. I asked her point blank what she wants for Christmas and she said "I don't know."

Plus, my budget is MUCH tighter than it has been in...maybe...ever in my kids' lives. They're in for a big change from what they're used to seeing under the tree at Christmas. I'm trying to prepare them, but I just don't want to see them disappointed that morning. I'm thinking about taking stuff I would normally do as stocking stuffers and wrapping them, just so there are more gifts under the tree.

Rebecca wants roller skates, so those and a pad set. I got her a spool knitting kit and Barry Stebbing's Drawing Horses book from RR. We just got the HearthSong catalogue and she wants a knot quilt set. She also wants a book called Sewing School, so I was thinking of putting together a little sewing kit to go with that. We also picked up some drawing pencils for her stocking.

I'm also planning to get tickets to Phineas & Ferb Live for the girls. It's in Chattanooga early next year, so we'll stay in a hotel and visit the aquarium too. That's part of their gift!

Glad you started this thread! I'm going to look through it for some more ideas for my DD. She is 7.5. As of now, she's getting an AG doll (Kanani, the girl of the year). Possibly a Xyron sticker maker. I might get my girls a huge dollhouse to share.

In her stocking she'll probably get some smaller things....so far I plan on the Barbie Thumbelina DVD, a mini AG doll (Marie Grace), an iTunes card for her iPod Touch, a roll of quarters, a pair of pajamas, and a few books. I'm not sure yet but I'm sure I'll throw in a few more things....maybe stickers, or magnets for her magnet playset, probably a small thing of candy....and I make each girl a coupon book for her stocking each year (example...stay up late one night, choose dinner, go to the dollar store, etc).

Etsy has some great doll beds that will fit AG dolls.

My 8 year old really wants an iPod Touch. I planned to get her one until I saw the new Amazon Fire. I pre-ordered it for her, but I'm not sure if I should go with the Fire or the iPod Touch or if there would be justification for both. So, I need to figure that out.

She was looking at the big AG Christmas catalog the other day and pointing out some things, but I doubt we'll get her any AG this year. She already has several dolls and a bunch of accessories and clothing. She just doesn't need anymore AG stuff.
