  1. What are you getting your 8 ish year old boy this Christmas? Some things I am considering... Lego's Hexbug Inchworm Some sort of game Some sort of educational thing For my daughter, I really have no ideas… Need help!
  2. Throughout December, Peace Hill Press is rolling out a variety of sales...free items, low prices, and a partridge in a pear tree. Check out the dates and the savings at http://peacehillpress.com/current-offers/
  3. Just in case I'm not the only one trying to incorporate Advent into Morning Time, I thought I'd start a thread for Advent ideas and links. Here's a link to start with and I will return to add more as I go along. Online Advent Calendar
  4. What did your family like? What did they not like? Our family: Hits: Halloween costumes for dress-up purchased after the season. [90% off the price ($1.90 - $2.40)]. Misses: (Other brand) Viewmaster that wouldn't advance the film. We all fiddled with it, and none of us could get it to work. The second one purchased (with fish pictures) worked fine.
  5. I can't decide if I'm too organized for Christmas or if I should be at this level of organization in all aspects of my life. This is what I do: After Christmas, I go through all the gift bags, take off the used tags, I put in fresh tissue paper and a new tag. I have all the gift bags organized this way in a bin each bag has a tag and complimentary tissue paper folded neatly inside. Then I have all the other gift tags in an 4 tray organizer by color (1 red, 2 green, 3 gold and/or silver and 4 blue and other odd colors. Then I have a bin of ribbons organized by colors. I have a
  6. A friend told me yesterday about her plans to make cinnamon rolls for Christmas breakfast. Uh oh. This is the first year we are going to stay home for Christmas - we usually travel. I've been a little swamped lately. Help me out here? What do you make, especially make-ahead?
  7. I hope everyone is well. If you have any information to share regarding model trains for a 13 yr old boy, I would be most appreciative. We are considering starting ds with a model train set, but is have no idea where to begin. My dad had Lionel, H.O. Trains when I was a kid, and we loved them and played for hours and hours with them, but I do not even know where to begin today. A friend's husband had an amazing set up some years ago, and it took up more than one room in their lower level.........I am looking for something much smaller and manageable.......something to pique ds'
  8. I don't know what it is about this time of year, but I get a hankering to watch Christmas Movies. I love the old favorites, mixed up with a few cheesy feel goods and everything in between. What are some of your favorites? I watched White Christmas already, still need to watch It's a Wonderful Life. I just saw Christmas Shoes and the Christmas Blessing the other day. Another fun one was The Christmas Lodge. After looking over my Netflix activity, here are some more I've seen: Dear Santa Lovestruck: The Musical Jack Frost
  9. I'd like to put together a Science Box for my ds for Christmas. He's 8 years old, but shoot for anything that would work for upper elementary. And not too terribly expensive, since this will be a collection of items that is meant for discovery and project-based learning. I'm thinking of things like geodes or a butterfly net or magnets or . . . . What really cool items would you put in a science box? Thanks! Lisa
  10. We started a new tradition this season and did lots of fun things to celebrate Christmas. I shared it on my blog if you're interested. Did you start any new traditions this year?
  11. So, what do you think it is? I had to combine different versions of movies in my poll, but if you feel strongly about one, or if your movie isn't here, please let me know!
  12. the Dec issue of Everyday Food arrived this week and they have Christmas cookies in there. Yumm... except we're trying to go gluten free. Anyone have any tastie gluten-free cookie recipes?
  13. I didn't see another thread about this yet, so I'm making one! I want to see pictures of everyone's trees and decorations! I found this article through Pinterest on how to take "glowing" pictures of your tree. I tried different settings on mine (and discovered some I had no idea were there.)
  14. Sounds kind of like something I should've been tooting about years ago! Sadly I wasn't. This year it's come to our attention that from here on out all things we do have to be on a budget. This will be our first Christmas on a REAL budget. I panic'ed at first at the thought. Now that I've begun building the lists with the kids and bringing their "wants" and "needs" into reality with our budget it's actually kind of fun!!!! What sort of things are you getting/doing this year to keep your Christmas gifting within a budget? Previous years I would spend $1,000 on Christmas without blinking
  15. Amazon has something American Girl on it's Gold Box deal today. I have copied and pasted below. I have seen threads about American Girls on here and thought someone may be able to use it. :) --------- American Girl Crafts Sew and Stuff Kit, McKenna ... Deal starts at 10:59 AM PST i
  16. You can also make vanilla sugar by putting a split vanilla bean into a jar of white, granulated sugar. Great way to infuse the sugar with vanilla flavor for baking. I did this too when I was finished bottling vanilla - I dried the beans and made gifts of vanilla sugar. http://www.kitchenproject.com/vanilla/MakeYourOwnVanillaExtract.htm That is the recipe I used. Dh and I bought Four bottles of Imperia vodka -- you don't need to spend that much money on vodka -- you can buy a lesser brand. Everyone says that the $$$ of the vodka doesn't matter, but I am jus tincredibly insecure so I
  17. I've been asked to bring the vegetable for Christmas dinner at my in-laws' house. MIL is making prime rib, and we're also having potatoes of some kind. Any ideas?
  18. I really, really love Christmas (and advent) music...but I don't actually own very much. I'd like to add to my collection this year--does anyone want to share their favorites? --Sarah
  19. Hello all! This is probably too late for most, but I thought I'd share our plans for our Christmas Unit study. I wrote everything out on our blog (to help me have all the links in one place and to help make it easier for others as well). For some Christmas themed ideas, you can check out the post here: http://gettinskooled.blogspot.com/2011/12/christmas-unit-study.html
  20. Just thought I'd share about our Santa theme today. We found this adorable book at the library, A New Improved Santa, about how Santa tried to go on a diet and get a new look. You can read about our little Santa day here: http://gettinskooled.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-improved-santa.html
  21. Our church showed this video on Sunday and I thought some of the Christians here might enjoy it: .
  22. I don't know if anyone else remembers this online advent calendar from Teaching Mom. It seems like the last one was 2008. There are readings, but also activities, crafts, carols, history snippets, book suggestions, recipes, etc. Since December started on a different day this year, I'm looking at whatever day would be the same advent day (ex, Dec 4 is the second Advent Sunday and = the Dec 7 day on the calendar). Thought this might be fun for others. If I remember correctly, the person who put it together was a WTM board member.
  23. I'm in need of ideas for my calendar. Please check out my blog to see what the items are and leave a comment with any of your suggestions. It would be much appreciated. The link is in my signature.:D
  24. What are some Christmas traditions that families have. Things you do every year or it "wouldn't be Christmas" type stuff. When a friend asked about ours, I realized that neither I nor my husband have any . :001_unsure: I want to start some so my kids can have great memories to look back on and continue with. For most of my childhood we didn't really "do" Christmas. I want to feel Christmasy.
  25. If you're starting a Jesse Tree with the first advent, that's tonight. Don't forget. (I mention this because I always do forget, and our church doesn't seem to be doing anything for advent. :glare:)
